Pope Francis concludes visit to Mozambique with a colorful Mass

The climax of Pope Francis’ visit to Mozambique had to be the Mass, celebrated this morning, in Maputo’s forty-two thousand capacity stadium known locally as

the Estádio Nacional do. Paul Samasumo – Maputo, Mozambique Not even the cold and steady rain could dampen the spirits of the Catholic faithful of Mozambique gathered for the Papal Mass. The faithful of Mozambique have waited for this moment for months. I heard stories of far-flung communities contributing money to send at least one of their own to Maputo for this Mass. Many others have come from neighbouring countries of Zambia, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Swaziland, South Africa and Tanzania. I met some Mozambicans from the United States who have come with their families to be at Mass. An inclusive choir The One thousand strong choir comprising the laity, even priests, nuns, seminarians have been practising for months. The choir members are drawn from the parishes of the Archdiocese of Maputo. The rest are choir members from neighbouring dioceses such as Xai Xai. In Mozambique, matters of inclusion are important. For this reason, the Assistant Liturgical Director for the papal Mass, Fr. Nelson Bernardo Covete told me that the local liturgical songs had been balanced in such a way that all Mozambicans hear something of their region at the Papal Mass. The prayers of the faithful were also in the various local languages of Mozambique. The other Zimpeto clinic Before coming to the stadium of Zimpeto for Mass, Pope Francis visited a medical clinic run by the Community of Sant’Egidio known as the DREAM Centre. It is a medical facility that focuses on HIV prevention and antiretroviral treatment. Yesterday, intending to visit the Sant’Egidio centre, we got lost in Zimpeto, and the driver took us to another Zimpeto health centre run by the government. Ironically, it is also also known as the clinic of Zimpeto. We met a courteous young doctor who had just completed a medical procedure. She politely explained the difference between the two Zimpeto health facilities. Looking around, I could not help but notice that as with all government hospitals in Africa, this one too was a facility doing its best but obviously lacking in resources. Amidst all this are the unsung heroes of young doctors and nurses. Pope ends visit to Mozambique Back to the Mass in Zimpeto: As the Papal Mass ended, many were visibly moved to tears. As we speak, the Pope has now left Mozambique for Madagascar as he proceeds on the second leg of this Apostolic Voyage. Pope Francis’ visit to Mozambique will be remembered for a long time to come. Highlights of Pope’s second day in Madagascar Here is video footage of some of the best moments from Pope Francis’ second day in Madagascar. Pope Francis was busy on his second day in Madagascar, which he spent in the capital, Antananarivo. He celebrated Mass for around 1 million faithful in the Soamandrakizay diocesan field, reminding them that following in Jesus’ footsteps is demanding. The Pope spent much of the afternoon at the Akamasoa “City of Friendship” Association, where a community helps poor Malagasy to help themselves through work. Pope Francis wrapped up the day by meeting with priests, religious men and women, and seminarians. Pope Francis makes Apostolic Journey to Mauritius Pope Francis is on his one-day Apostolic Journey to Mauritius, departing from Madagascar and flying to the island nation in the Indian Ocean. By Vatican News The Pope’s visit on Monday to the Republic of Mauritius falls on the same day as the feast of Blessed Jacques Désiré Laval, widely known as the Apostle of Mauritius. The priest (1803-1864) was a country doctor in France who became a missionary to the island in 1841. Fr Laval spent the rest of his life evangelizing and helping improve agricultural and sanitary conditions in Mauritius. After celebrating Mass for the faithful in Port Louis, Pope Francis will take a moment to pray at the French priest’s tomb. The Holy Father’s last event in Mauritius is a meeting with the civil authorities and diplomatic corps at the State House. Afterwards, he returns by plane to Antananarivo, Madagascar, to stay the night, before returning to Rome on Tuesday.

“Stay With Us” This year, the Church will celebrate Catechetical Sunday on September 15, 2019. The 2019 theme will be "Stay with Us." Those who the Community has designated to serve as catechists will be called forth to be commissioned for their ministry. Catechetical Sunday is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the role that each person plays, by virtue of Baptism, in handing on the faith and being a witness to the Gospel. Catechetical Sunday is an opportunity for all to rededicate themselves to this mission as a community of faith.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION K-8 Classes have begun. Only those children whose registration is completed in advance will be admitted to the class.

FIRST PENANCE PROGRAM: Letters announcing the events of our program will be mailed to the parents of second graders in our parish. All parents who have expressed an interest in taking part in the program will attend an important meeting to help them reflect on the place of the Sacrament of Penance in their own lives and in the lives of their children. GOOD NEWS FOR LITTLE ONES IS BACK! IS SOMEONE UNDER 5 IN YOUR FAMILY? If you have a small child under the age of 5, you’ll be happy to know that during the 10:15 AM Mass, beginning September 23rd, we will resume our Religion readiness program for those ages 2 to 5, entitled “Good News for Little Ones”. This Program is supervised by Olivia Harrington our Religious Ed. Coordinator and staffed by trained catechists and volunteers. This program will be located in the Upper Room of the Church.
