Pastor’s Column

Notes of Thanks and Prayer

Dear Father John: I Pray every day that you, deacons, church staff, church members & Knights of Columbus stay safe from this Pandemic. I live alone but I’m not lonely as I feel God’s presence with me. It is through God’s consciousness that I am hopeful and fearless.

God Bless St. Anthony’s Church.

We miss you Father John and hope that you are doing well. I wish we had the internet…. I am praying for every-

one every night and morning.

SAINT OF THE WEEK

If you’re ever in Philadelphia on May 22, forget parking anywhere near Saint Rita’s shrine. Cars line streets and fill medians as throngs pack a candlelight vigil and six Masses, honoring this patroness of lost causes, hopeless situations, and—as her statue in countless churches built by twentieth-century immigrants testifies—difficult mar-riages, troubled homes, and alienated children. Wise peo-ple warn, be careful what you pray for. “Divine Savior,” Rita prayed, “let me suffer like you!” Obedient to parents who refused her wish to become a nun, Rita married a man who returned her devotion with twenty years of abuse. When enemies murdered him, Rita’s two sons swore revenge. Paintings depict her pointing the angry boys toward Christ crucified, whom she begged to re-strain them. Within the year, both sons died. Alone now, Rita went to the convent but was refused. The nuns feared violence, since one of them was related to the murderer. Rita arranged peace between the families, made vows, and became much sought after as a coun-selor and intercessor for forty years on earth—and ever since in heaven.

SAINT RITA OF CASCIA (1381-1457)

Reading about the lives of the saints is a great example of how to live our lives. How to strengthen our relation-ship with G. It shows how we are all on Body of Christ. It reinforces that our gifts are meant to be shared and used for the benefit of others and not our own self interest.

Going to ask my Mom if that offer to slap me into next year is

still on the table.

Of all the things I learned in grade school, how to avoid cooties

was the last one I expected to use!

People keep asking “is corona virus really that serious?” Listen

up! Casinos and churches are closed. When heaven and hell

agree on the same thing, it’s probably pretty serious!

Now that teachers finally have a chance to use the restroom,

there’s no toilet paper.

It’s like being 16 again. Gas is cheap and I’m grounded!

Shout out to all the parents who never taught their kids respect

and now they’re stuck at home with the little brats!!!

Cops these days will be like…come out with your hands

washed!

Homeschooling Update: My child just said, “ I hope I don’t

have the same teacher next year!”

Never in my whole life would I imagine my hands would con-

sume more alcohol than my mouth!

Ladies…time to start dating the older dudes. They can get you

into the grocery store early.

I don’t like the fact that my chances of survival seem to be

linked to the common sense of others.

I can’t believe I can walk into a store to buy weed, but I have to

meet my hairdresser in a dark alley with unmarked bills to get a

haircut!

Have to say that the Class of 2020 outdid themselves with Sen-

ior Skip Day this year!

Sitting at the bar in the kitchen at night. Tried to pick up my

wife. She gave me a fake phone number

It’s been a blessing being home with the wife for three weeks

now. We’ve caught up on everything I’ve done wrong for fif-

teen years.

Have you noticed that since beauty salons are closed, selfies are

down 68%?

Breaking News: Wearing a mask inside your home is now

highly recommended. Not so much to prevent corona virus, but

to stop eating.

Some Humor For The Day!!!

“What is the reason for your hope?” Imagine some-body coming up to you and asking you that question. Not “What are you hoping for?” or “What are you hoping to do?” No, this isn’t about our desires for possessions or aspirations for life, it’s “Why do you hope?” Peter today tells us that we ought to be ready to give an answer to this question. Truth be told, few of us spend much time thinking about why we hope. Luckily, the scriptures today give us our answers. We hope because Christ suffered for us, in order that we might come to God. We hope because we know that, in the Spirit, God grants us another Advocate through Christ to remain with us always. No matter what we might hope for, whatever we might hope to do, we must always first know and proclaim the reason for our hope: the presence of God in Christ, with us through the power of the Spirit.

May 17, 2020

There is a geography to the liturgy of bap-tism that distills the journey of faith. Each part of the liturgy is assigned to a distinct part of the church building. Baptism, whether of infants car-ried to church by their parents or of adults follow-ing the paschal candle into a darkened church at Easter, starts at the door. First, a threshold must be crossed and a new community of meaning and memory encountered for the first time. Then, the celebration moves to the place for God’s Word. Next, as the litany of the saints is sung, there is a procession to the font. Finally, the movement is to the table, the altar of the Eucha-rist. There, newly baptized adults are brought to the sacred meal, or the parents of infants are blessed and reminded that their child will one day share fully in the table’s banquet.

Many Catholic churches honor this geog-raphy by placing the font near the door, or at least small vessels with water. The doorway of our church is a place of memory, and a passage-way to a new way of living.
