A Call to Discipleship

The Church is a community of disciples—people who have been reconciled to God in Christ, and who now seek to glorify him by following him in every area of their lives. The Church’s mission is to make disciples. Jesus commissions his disciples in Matthew 28:18-20: “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

The church makes disciples by sharing the good news of God’s grace with people, baptizing them and including them in relationship with God and his people, and then “teaching them to obey” Jesus with us.

C.S. Lewis defined the church’s mission of discipleship in this way: “the Church exists for nothing else but to draw men into Christ, to make them little Christs. If they are not doing that, all the cathedrals, clergy, missions, sermons, even the Bible itself, are simply a waste of time. God became Man for no other purpose.” Our great hope as a church is that we would see Jesus as he really is – in all of his beauty, grace, goodness and truth – and display Jesus to our neighbors.

A Rule of Life

Christian communities throughout history have sought to organize their corporate life according to a rule of life. These rules have varied widely, but the goal has been to create a structure and a rhythm to our life with God and one another. A rule gives us a clear way of being disciples together.

The meaning of rule comes from the Greek word for trellis. A trellis is a tool that lifts a vine off the ground and provides structure for its healthy growth. The structure doesn’t create the growth; it simply provides a framework for the organic process of growth. In this way, we hope that the rule outlined in this booklet will provide a framework for us to order our life together as we pursue Christ and grow towards maturity in him.

A rule of life is not a law, a super-spirituality, or a performance based form of religion. It is simply one way of ordering our lives in a busy and chaotic world so that we pursue together what matters most. God has given us several means of Grace – places where he has promised to meet us and feed us with his grace. He meets us in prayer, in the Scriptures, in worship, and in the fellowship of his people.

In this booklet you will learn more about the rhythms woven into the fabric of our lives together as Christ Community Church.

6

Rhythms of Life

“Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me

and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly. (Matthew 11:28-30, The Message)

Prayer and Bible Reading We daily read and meditate through the Bible as individuals and small groups. Here we learn also to pray the Scriptures. In the following pages, you will find brief devotional liturgies to guide you each day in morning and evening prayer and Bible reading.

Corporate Worship We gather weekly to worship God and, by his Spirit’s power, to re-center our lives on Jesus. As Jesus speaks to us by his Word and feeds us from his table, we are nourished in our life of discipleship. You can find more information about our worship gatherings on our website at http://cccgainesville.com/about-us/sunday-morning.

Community Groups Community Groups are small groups of people from Christ Community, both members and non-members, that gather to study, pray, and fellowship together, typically once a week. We would love for you to join any one of our groups! Please call the contact person for the group you are interested in to find out more information. You can find this information on our website: http://cccgainesville.com/ways-to-connect/community-groups.

7

Reflection on the Preached Word We believe God reveals himself powerfully through his proclaimed Word. As you reflect on the weekly sermon, consider the following questions, both individually and with others in community:

1. What was the sermon about this week? What was the main idea?

2. What part of the sermon was impactful to you personally? Why?

3. Where in the sermon were you convicted of sin? Of what do

you feel lead to repent? Where do you need God’s grace?

4. How did the sermon make Jesus beautiful to you?

5. How can you apply this message to you personally? How can we apply this to CCC as a community?

Join Us in Exploring the Christian Faith If you are exploring Christianity or are new to the faith, we encourage you to jump right into these life rhythms with us. One of the very best ways to get to know Jesus is to read his message in a community of faith. Worship with us on Sundays, allowing the songs and the prayers, sermons and sacraments to introduce you to life with Jesus. Try to read the Bible and pray along with us. Underline any questions that you have and ask for help. Meet with an elder, or join one of our Community Groups; get to know us and let us get to know you.

How to Use This Devotional

A Note on the Organization & Structure The daily liturgies (or patterns) that follow provide devotional helps for morning and evening of each day. We have included space for daily scripture readings, as well as daily prayers that are structured around the petitions in the Lord’s Prayer. Each day highlights one petition for special consideration.

A Word on the Bible Reading Plan If you already have a reading plan, feel free to continue with it. If not, we invite you to use the Scripture reading plan in this booklet. It will guide you on a journey to explore the entire Bible in one year, reading the Old and New Testaments concurrently. The readings do not have to be tied to a calendar, so you can begin today, with Day 1! The plan for Scripture reading in this booklet is shaped by this belief: frequent exposure to and delightful meditation upon the full counsel of God’s Word, is crucial to the health and flourishing of God’s children. This conviction flows from Scripture itself:

Jesus said, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God” (Matthew 4:4)

David describes the believer in this way: His “delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers.” (Psalm 1:2-3)

Feel free to be flexible with the pace of your reading. Keep going in sequence, even if you miss a few days. Or, consider selecting just one of the Old Testament columns to read at a time. Remember, our goals are daily consistency, meaningful meditation, deep delight, and every-Word intake. This plan can be used year after year, to that end.
