I. READING

A day in the life of a soldierThis is Sergeant Harry Davis. He is a non-commissioned officer in the American Army. His program

starts in the morning with the wakeup at 0430 (zero four thirty) from Monday to Friday. After he comes back from the physical training (PT) he sometimes has a long shower if he has enough time. Sergeant Davis doesn’t usually eat breakfast because he likes eating more in the afternoon when he has lunch at the mess hall. On Mondays Sgt. Davis has classes all day long. On Tuesdays and Fridays he has field training exercise (FTX) from 0800 (zero eight hundred) to 1145 (eleven forty five) and on Wednesdays and Thursdays he has communications training and map reading. At the weekend he enjoys his free time.

If he is not on duty, Sgt. Davis works until 1530 (fifteen thirty), then he goes to his room. He usually asks for an afternoon pass after he finishes work and he spends his afternoon doing leisure activities. He dislikes going to the non-commissioned officer’s club so he goes out if it is a nice day or he simply stays indoors and reads a book. He loves reading because it’s one of his hobbies. If he goes out, he has to be back to his room by 2130 (twenty-one thirty) in the evening. Lights-out time is at 2200 (twenty-two hundred) when he goes to bed.

II. GRAMMAR

The Zero Conditional

Definition: This structure represents a real general condition that expresses a possible or anticipated situation. For example:

He goes out if it is a fine day.He has a long shower if he has enough time.

Page 6: Daily routine/Leisure activities

The zero conditional clause is introduced by the conjunction IF and it may be used in the affirmative, negative or interrogative form. For example:

He goes out if it is a nice day.If he is not on duty, Sgt. Harris works until 1530.Do you get wet if you stay under the shower? If the zero conditional clause precedes the main clause, the two clauses are separated by a comma.

For example:

If he is not on duty, Sgt. Harris works until 1530.FormIn zero conditional clauses the time is now or always and the situation is real and possible therefore the simple present tense is used in both clauses.

“IF” CLAUSE (CONDITION) MAIN CLAUSE (RESULT)IF + PRESENT SIMPLE TENSE PRESENT SIMPLE TENSE

If he has enough time, he has a long shower. If it doesn’t rain, we go out for a walk.

The zero conditional is used to make statements about the real world and often refer to general truths, such as scientific facts. The order of the clauses is not fixed, “If-clause” can be the first as well as the second. For example:

Plants die if they don’t get enough water. If you mix green and yellow, you get brown.

Look at some more examples in the tables below:

IF CONDITION RESULTPRESENT SIMPLE TENSE PRESENT SIMPLE TENSE

If I miss the 7 o’clock bus, I am late for work.If I am late for work, my boss gets angry. If people don’t eat, they die.If you heat ice, does it melt?

RESULT IF CONDITIONI am late for work if I miss the 7 o’clock bus.My boss gets angry if I am late for work.People die if they don’t eat.Does ice melt if you heat it?
