Your home is your castle but is it environmentally friendly? And

energy efcient? Is your indoor air healthy? With winters chill waiting

in the wings, consider updating your place with a green facelift.

Consumer demand for eco-friendly products is high, despite the economic

lowdown. As all things green are enjoying mainstream appeal, living an

nvironmentally sustainable life is easier for the average consumer. And being

green in ones home is often nancially wise. Heres what some experts on

greening your home have to say. Take a tip or two, or jump in all the way.

Haiku Designs offers a Total Sleep System with a Naturalpedic organic latex/foam mattress or an EcoRest organic cotton futon, with

organic sheets, organic pillows and natural mattress pads, all placed upon a Haiku Designs eco-friendly platform bed. The health benet is that you

are sleeping in a natural, chemical-free environment and not on synthetic, petrochemical foams or llers.

Jennifer Lees of Haiku Designs says, We were one of the rst in the U.S. to offer bedroom lines that meet the E-1 European Emission

Certication. This strict standard limits the amount of formaldehyde and other toxic gases that furniture can off-gas into the sleeping

environment. Many of our stylish bedroom furniture collections are eco-friendly, made from sustainable produced wood sources or from bamboo,

a renewable hard wood that is grown in a sustainable way and helps promote reforestation.

All bed frames are made from solid wood, and wood composites. There are no plastics, synthetic veneer or petrochemical off-gassing, no

particle board. Haiku Designs doesnt carry any product with particle board or pressed particle wood, because of toxic chemicals used in the

product, and the off-gassing of chemicals into the sleep environment.

Its becoming our mandate to search out and nd eco-friendly sources, and make the cost justiable. We want to live as healthy a life as

possible, not just with organic food, and without chemicals in our pillows that we put our face in, and the paint on our walls.

interior design with Details Design StudioI believe in putting my money where my mouth is, for the benet of

my planet and all the people who live on it, says Barbee James, owner/designer of

Details Design Studio in Boulder. Details Design Studio incorporates eco-friendly

design and green materials in its client projects whenever possible.

James has remodeled her ofce/showroom to showcase the companys

commitment to sustainable and recycled products. She chose long-lasting

hardwood nishes, recycled cabinets and countertops, tile produced from recycled

content, water-based low-to-no-VOC paint, and a photovoltaic solar array topower the whole operation.

Even the new hardwood oors at Details Designs reect Jamess commitment

to sustainability. The -inch, quarter-sawn white oak ooring could last 100 or

more years. It has three coatings of a low-VOC, water-based polyurethane nish,

earth friendly and not toxic when applied.

Ashley Mullis, designer at Details Design Studio, says, First, we listen to

the customers needs and wants for their project. We try to be as sustainable as

possible. We try to recycle and reuse what they have. If we change it a little bit they

might like it. Weve taken old chairs with good bones, from the 1950s and 1960s,

and contemporized them with new coverings. We keep them out of the landll.

Fresh paint is an easy way to update; Mullis recommends water-based and low-VOC products, and paints made from clay. We use green products in every aspect

of design; for example, a water-based renishing product for wood oors; post-

consumer-waste tile and Marmoleum sheet and tile, corn-based carpet like Smart

Strand, which, when its nally worn out, will be composted easily in a landll.

Theres a product called Flor eco-friendly carpet tiles; you can replace a single tile

instead of throwing out the whole carpet. We use products that last long and are

high quality - youll save money over time and keep things from the landll.

Windows are an important way to update and be eco-friendly. Replace your

windows with double-pane and triple-pane, which are more energy efcient. If you

use a double cellular shade, it has a high R- value, and helps in controlling heat gain

and loss, as well as your heating and air-conditioning bills.

Give the kitchen and bath new life by changing the countertops. There arerecycled products, like Eco by Constantino, which is made out of corn oil, glass,

industrial ash and ceramics all recycled material made from post-consumer

waste. It is basically stain resistant, unlike granite. And the stone yard we go to

Advantage Stone Fabrication in Longmont has remnants from other projects.

    before

    after

If we can recycle, reuse and keep thingsout of the landll, thats what we want to

do. Were happy to help people do that.- Ashley Mullis, Details Design Studio

You can enjoy the many benets of solar energy, and save money, too. Brad Bushlack, director of

sales and marketing at Solargreen Technologies, is upbeat about the energy-saving and nancial benets of

    the three key products his company sells and installs: attic insulation used in tandem with solar attic fans;

and the Solatube, a solar daylighting device. Solargreen also offers a variety of solar heating and hot-watersystems, if youre ready to go solar.

We realized how under-insulated peoples homes are, Bushlack says. We partner with Xcel Energy

in their Home Smart Program and are their provider for attic insulation. We use blown-in berglass in

conjunction with a solar-powered attic fan; the two complement each other and provide proper insulation

and proper venting. They make systems you already have in place like air conditioning more efcient.

And there are at least three generous rebates available for people to do this.

Solatube brings sunlight from the rooftop into any area of your home. It costs nothing to operate

and produces no greenhouse gases. Not to be confused with the old familiar skylight, solar daylighting

devices cast an even, steady light throughout the room with no hotspots, dont leak precipitation or cause

damaging condensation, dont heat up the room they are lighting or siphon heat from the home thus

saving on your air-conditioning and heating costs.

Its better than a skylight because it creates more light and has no heat transfer. Its Energy Star rated

and is available for a Federal tax credit, Bushlack says.

Ellies Eco Home Store is a one-stop eco-friendly emporium in Boulder selling

natural and organic products at competitive prices. Ellies makes natural, sustainable and

healthy products for people and their homes more accessible to every-day shoppers.

Think of your typical department store with lots of variety only environmentally

    conscious.

Ellies multitudinous offerings include linens and furniture, general merchandise, building supply, paint and nishes, solar services, natural childrens products, health and

beauty, and a design center to help customers remodel or build with sustainable and

    green products.

Visit the store and check out Ellies amazing array of recycled and renewable

products and those that conserve water and energy. Natural cork ooring, recycled

cotton insulation, non-toxic paints and nishes, locally made concrete countertops,

bamboo plywoods, recycled plastic furniture, wool carpeting, recycled pop bottle

carpeting, tropical hardwood decking, composite decking, recycled rubber ooring/

pavers, recycled roong, Boulder laundry detergent, Eco-Products non-toxic cleaning

products, compact-uorescent light bulbs, organic linens for baby all under one roof.

Just look around your house address every surface, says Ellies owner and CEO

Steve Savage. The industry trend is to get rid of carpet because of allergies, and thebacking on nylon carpet has formaldehyde. I recommend a wool carpet; wool is a

renewable resource, its not made from oil, and it has natural characteristics that clean

the air in your home and help keep the humidity level down. Humidity, if unchecked,

    leads to mold.

If you like hard-surface ooring, use reclaimed hardwood and bamboo, and

FSC [Forest Stewardship Council] certied woods, which come from forests that have

not been clear-cut, but rather done in a responsible way. For decking, we recommend

composite rather than cedar hardwood; its maintenance-free and and lasts twice as

    long.

He endorses no-VOC paints that use no-VOC tint. We dont believe in low-VOC

paints, as they may include a tint that has VOCs. The nish and sealer should also have

no VOCs.Ellies sells a roong material made of recycled rubber and plastic. Its good for

the environment, and insurance companies give you a break for using it. Fiber cement

siding is durable, holds paint two times longer than does wood, and it has a 50-year

    warranty.

And choose an HVAC system that will circulate air in your home. Use a high

hypoallergenic lter to purify the air in your home. If remodeling, look at structural

areas, and use cotton insulation or no-VOC foam urethane insulation. If you have new

    construction, structural insulation panels (SIPS) can give an R-60 or even better wall;

    city code requires only R-19.

Savage believes that people should educate themselves about air inside their

environment, how indoor air quality is affecting our health. Mattresses can be toxic,

for example. Our mattresses have no petrochemicals and no chemical re retardants.

The natural wool that is quilted between the organic cotton serves as the re retardant.

They come with a 20-year warranty and a 90-day comfort guaranty.

eco-friendly products for the home with Ellies Home Store

These products dont always have ahigher price tag. Some are less thantheir traditional counterparts. Andtheir lifecycle costs are often less you may pay more upfront, but they

ave a longer life. - Steve Savage,Ellies Eco Home Store

If youre wondering if a kitchen upgrade

is worth the demo time and expense, the

answer is, unequivocally, yes. Even in awn economy, the kitchen resell payback,

he percentage of remodel costs you can

ect to recoup in added home value when

sell, is hovering around 80%. Thats a

ty wise investment for something you live

    h and enjoy every day.

With more people staying in their homes

ownsizing, you may be working in an

er or smaller kitchen, which appears to be

trend right now. Modernizing one of the

t heavily used spaces in your home cang you years of comfort and most certainly

off down the roadif you remodel the

    t way.

    art at the countertop

While you dont need to go overboard on

avagant xtures or surfaces, it does pay to

est in high-quality products that will not

y look beautiful today, but will stand up

veryday usage and still look good when

    re ready to sell.

Given the utilitarian nature of a kitchen,

one of your most signicant remodel

expenditures will be your countertops. Dontcheat in this area, especially if you have a

smaller kitchen and can cover your counters

in high-grade stone for half the price of your

    friends McMansion gourmet kitchen. Be

mindful to avoid cheap laminate that can crack

or melt with heat exposure or a material so

artistically stunning that it loses its function.

    Right now rich and multi-dimensional

    quartz countertops, including some eco-

friendly products using up to 75% recycled

materials, are growing in popularity, saysMoros. Other kitchen trends showing up

at the International Builders Show include

surprising color themes. Calming tones like

blue are gaining traction as well as interesting

grays, browns and pumpkin tones, often

punctuated by dark or white cabinetry. In

addition to modern standards like stainless

    steel appliances and hardwood oors,

homeowners are also splurging one that one

special design feature, such as a patterned or

    detailed backsplash.

    Finish with fexibility

To help you put all these pieces together,

look for a quality team like Boulders Moros

Fabrication. With a 20-year track record,

its knowledgeable staff can help you pick

    the right surface material, complementary

    backsplashes and multi-functional work spaces

to t your lifestylewith no surprises along

    the way.

We are local company that pridesourselves on our on-site design assistance

and going above and beyond to help our

customers make their dreams become a

reality, says general manager/partner MartyMoros. In addition to quality natural stone

choices, we can offer cabinet leveling, existing

    countertop tear-outs and backsplash ideas.

Because Moros uses its own state-of-the

art fabrication shop and installation crews,

it has complete control over pricing and

schedulingsomething the big box shops jus

cant compete with. In construction projects

a client can almost always expect scheduling

conicts, says Moros. Since there is no

middle man and everything is done in-househere, we can be exible and adapt to

    these changes.

    That exibility also includes customizing

your kitchen to suit your exact tastes and

needsnot just settling for a granite slab

remnant thats half-price but not really

your design aesthetic. Specializing in green

    products and natural stonegranite, quartz

and marblefor beauty, elegance and long-

lasting qualities, Moros Fabrication can delive

cutting-edge modern designs, eco-friendlysurfaces or classic looks that stand the test

    of time.

    With more homeowners choosing to

live better within their means and make

their current homes as special as possible, a

kitchen upgrade continues to be a sensible

place to spend your hard-earned dollars. Just

remember to invest wisely in quality products

    and informed, service-oriented professionals

that take the most special room in your home

    as seriously as you do.
