MARKET PREVIEW
US: U.S. stocks were mixed on Monday on a choppy, volatile
day of trading, as investors reacted to a soft batch of U.S.
economic data, which could exacerbate fears of a looming
recession in the coming months if the economy continues to
trend downward.
Asia: Asian stocks fell for the first time in three days as health-
care companies led losses and more than two-thirds of the
companies in Japan’s Topix index traded without the right to
the next dividend.India: Benchmark indices ended lower by over 1%, amid
weakness in Asian peers, with financials shares contributing the
most to the decline. Depreciating rupee and rise in
crude oil prices further dampened investor sentiment. The
S&P BSE Sensex ended down 371 points at 24,966 and
the Nifty50 closed 101 points lower at 7,615. The Sensex and
the Nifty touched an intra-day low of 24,895 and 7,588,
respectively. Market is expected to open on a flattish note and
likely to witness range bound trading session.
Economy: Luxor Capital, a $3.8 billion hedge fund that hasbeen losing money for months, said on Monday it will not be
returning exiting investor’s cash in full, keeping a portion lockedup until some illiquid investments can be sold.
California Governor announced a deal with legislative and labor
leaders to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour by 2023,
saying the nation's most-populous state would lead the way
toward higher pay for the working poor.
Japan has loaned $400 million to Sri Lanka to build a new
terminal at the island's main international airport which suffers
congestion from growing tourism.
The financial safety net erected by central banks, exporters and
the IMF has grown in recent years, but has left many emerging
market countries vulnerable to global economic shocks, the
IMF said.Commodities: Oil prices fell in early Asian trade on Tuesday as
concerns mount that a rally since January is fizzling out, while
analysts forecast another rise to record levels for US
crude stockpiles.
Gold posted modest gains in Asia on Tuesday ahead of remarks
by Fed chief to set the tone ahead of the April rate meeting.
Currency: The dollar slid lower against a basket of the other
major currencies on Monday after data showing that U.S.
consumer spending ticked higher last month, but inflation
eased.
