    Good Prospects or 2011

In 2010, all o the segments o the van business rebounded. As a re-

sult, Mercedes-Benz Vans was able to substantially increase its sales

and earnings compared to the previous year, with the number o unit

sales rising by more than one third. This trend was supported by the

newly presented Vito van as well as by the Viano minivan with their

    new, uel-ecient engines.

The characteristic eatures o the new Mercedes-Benz Vito include

BlueEFFICIENCY technology, a greater payload, a new chassis, less

interior noise, and an upgraded driver area. The vehicle consumes up

to 1.5 liters less uel than the predecessor models, and CO2

    emissions

are lower as well. In addition, the Mercedes-Benz Viano minivan also

sets even higher standards or comort and eciency than the prede-

cessor model. We are also writing a new chapter in the story o light

commercial vehicle drive technology by becoming the rst automaker

to introduce a van eaturing a battery-electric drive ex works: the Vito

E-CELL. A small batch o 100 units o this vehicle have been out on

the streets o Berlin and Stuttgart since summer 2010 as part o a

project conducted by the German Ministry o Transport, Building, and

Urban Development (BMVBS). Production o the ollow-up series be-

gan in February. This batch will comprise more than 2,000 units or

    customer use.

The positive sales trend posted by Mercedes-Benz Vans in 2010 will

continue this year. We will introduce the current model generation othe Sprinter in Latin America in 2011, thereby substantially enhancing

our product range there. In addition, the Sprinter, the most successul

vehicle o its kind worldwide, will also be introduced in China in 2011.

    Sincerely,

    Volker Mornhinweg

The companys founders, Gottlieb Daimler and Carl Benz, made his-

tory with the invention of the automobile in the year 1886. 125 years

later, in anniversary year 2011, Daimler AG is one of the worlds most

successful automotive companies. With its divisions Mercedes-Benz

Cars, Daimler Trucks, Mercedes-Benz Vans, Daimler Buses and

    Ancestors: The Benz Delivery Vehicle

    and the Daimler Business Vehicle

It was back in the age when cars still looked like carriages, with big spoked

wheels at the rear and smaller ones at the ront. The driver had a raised

seat like a coachman; the only dierence was that he had his hands on

a steering wheel instead o holding the reins. Gottlieb Daimler presented

and delivered the worlds rst truck on October 1, 1896. It was equipped

    with a our-horsepower (hp) two-cylinder engine and had a payload o

1,500 kilograms (kg). Shortly thereater, Carl Benz introduced his own

commercial vehicle the Benz Delivery Vehicle on December 5, 1896.

Considered to be the worlds rst motorized van, it was delivered to the

Du bon March department store in Paris. In December 1897 Daimler-

Motoren-Gesellschat began oering the Daimler Business Vehicle series.

The models had payloads o 500, 800, 1,200, and 2,000 kg, and engines

with outputs o three, our, six, eight, and ten hp.

These vehicles are the ancestors o Europes most advanced range o

vans, which comprises the Mercedes-Benz Vito, Sprinter, and Vario. The

history o Mercedes-Benz own van production series really got going in

1955, when the brand presented its rst postwar van at the IAA in Frank-

urt: the L 319. This vehicle was later replaced by the T2 and the T1. In

1986 Mercedes-Benz added the T2 (LN1), whose current successor is the

Vario. The light trucks versatility provides municipalities, delivery com-

panies, and bus operators with an ideal basis or a broad range o dier-

ent applications. Through the introduction o the L 206 and the L 306 in

1971, Mercedes-Benz expanded its commercial vehicle lineup to include

the compact van segment below 3.5 tons GVW, which today is covered by

    the Vito product range.

A particularly successul representative o the Mercedes-Benz van lineup

is the Sprinter, which was launched on the market in 1995. With cumu-

lative sales o almost two million units, the Sprinter is the best-selling

vehicle o its class in Europe. Today it can be ound in more than 100

countries around the world. The reasons or this success are the vans

    customized vehicle concepts; wide range o body and weight variants;

superior engines; a pleasing, timelessly modern design; and an especially

unctional cab. The Sprinter also has an extensive array o standard-tted

saety eatures, including numerous cutting-edge assistance systems.

Daimler is the global leader or such systems, which it is urther rening

or its entire commercial vehicle range.

Its thereore no wonder that the Sprinter has won many trophies and

awards during its career. They include the German Commercial Vehicle

Award, the Van o the Year title in several countries, and the highest

van rating in various surveys to select the best commercial vehicles. The

James Cook camper van, a travel variant, has been honored with the

title Camper Van o the Year. As a result o all these distinctions, the

Sprinter has won more awards than almost any other van in history. The

new Sprinter NCV3 was added to the van lineup in 2006, and the vehicle

has continued to be a success despite the general market slump during

    the recent global recession.

A distinctive character: The new generation o the

    Mercedes-Benz Viano

Assembly o the frst customer vehicle at Fujian Daimler

    Automotive in Fuzhou, China

    Highlights 2010/2011.

    2010nApril:

The rst Viano and Vito vans to be manuactured by Fujian Daimler Au-

tomotive (FJDA) roll o the assembly line in the Chinese city o Fuzhou

(Fujian province). The vans are produced in China by a joint venture

established between Fujian Motors Group (FJMG), China Motor Corp.

(CMC), and Daimler AG in 2007. Says Lian Xiaoqing, the CEO o FJDA,

We have successully produced the rst Viano and Vito units. For us,

this step marks the beginning o a new era o development. And Ul-rich Walker, Chairman and CEO o Daimler Northeast Asia, adds, The

Mercedes-Benz Viano/Vito and Sprinter multipurpose vehicles are ex-

tremely well suited to the needs o businesses and amilies.

    nAugust:

The new generation o the Mercedes-Benz Viano sets new standards

or minivans. The ecient new drive system is unparalleled, eaturing

BlueEFFICIENCY technology or maximum uel economy and environmen-

tal compatibility. This drive technology encompasses demand-controlled

ancillary components, an ECO start-stop unction, low rolling-resistance

tires, and other eatures. The Vianos smoothly running our and six-cylin-

der diesel and gasoline engines cover a range o outputs extending rom

100 kilowatts (kW) (126 hp) to 190 kW (258 hp). With its modied and

retuned model-specic ront and rear axles, the chassis ensures great

driving pleasure, saety, and comort. And last but not least, the Vianos

updated look is modeled along the lines o the current Mercedes-Benz

cars, giving it a very distinctive design.

The new generation o the Vito is presented at the same time. The vehicle

is robust, durable, and reliable, making it the right van or even the tough-

est jobs. The Vito also benets rom the new engine generation, as well

as rom a retuned chassis with a model-specic arrangement or goods

or passenger transport, and a driver-riendly cab. As ar as the panel van

    and Mixto versions are concerned, durability is at the top o the agenda;

with the crewbus, the ocus is on the ride comort o the rear passengers.

    nSeptember:

At the IAA Commercial Vehicles show in Hanover, Europcar the larg-

est rental vehicle company in Europe acquires 200 Mercedes-Benz

Sprinter 313 CDI panel vans. The Paris-based company oers around

190,000 vehicles or rental at 5,300 rental locations in more than 150

countries. In Germany, Europcar oers Mercedes-Benz rental vans at

    more than 577 locations.

    n September:

One o the greatest attractions at Daimlers IAA presentation is the

world premiere o the Vito E-CELL. The new Sprinter LGT also makes

its debut at the commercial vehicle show in Hanover. Given appropriate

operating conditions, the cost o the vans BlueEFFICIENCY liqueed

petroleum gas technology can quickly be recouped due to the compara-

tively low cost o the uel. The vehicles gas tank is positioned under

the cargo area foor and holds 76 liters o liqueed gas, which gives the

Sprinter LGT a range o about 500 kilometers (km). Because it has a

bivalent design, the Sprinter LGT can also carry 100 liters o gasoline in

order to extend the vehicles range. Like the NGT natural gas variant, the

engine o the Sprinter LGT has an output o 115 kW (156 hp), complies

with the Euro 5 emissions standard, and has a maximum torque o 240

newton meters (Nm). The Sprinter LGT is available in several dierent

versions: as a panel van, crewbus, chassis with cab, and twin cabin. For

each variant, the van is available with a wheelbase o either 3,665 mil-

limeters (mm) or 4,325 mm. The van has a gross vehicle weight o 3.5

tons. In addition to introducing the new Sprinter LGT, Mercedes-Benz

adds more variants to the Sprinter NGT product range. The new ver-

sions include the Sprinter NGT with a twin cabin and the crewbus with

monovalent natural gas drive. The Sprinter LGT panel van is now also

available with a gross vehicle weight o 3.88 tons, while the chassis also

comes in 3.5-ton and 4.25-ton GVW versions.

    nOctober:

An independent panel o experts rom the postal and logistics sec-

tor presents the Vito E-CELL with the Postal Technology InternationalAward 2010 in the category Transport/Logistics Innovation o the Year.

The award, which has been presented since 2009, honors outstanding

developments in the area o logistics, automation technologies, innova-

tive delivery systems, and environmental protection. Together with its

online edition, the Postal Technology Internationaltrade magazine pro-

vides decision-makers rom the logistics and postal sectors worldwide

with all the latest sector news. The award is presented during the annual

Post Expo logistics trade air in Copenhagen, Denmark. Commenting on

the award presentation, Volker Mornhinweg, Head o Mercedes-Benz

Vans, says, Im particularly pleased that we have been able to introduce

our innovative Vito E-CELL to this important customer group in such a

    positive way.

    nDecember:

Shortly beore the end o the year Mercedes-Benz Vans receives its big-

gest order ever in Germany. The contract rom Deutsche Post DHL is

or 1,300 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 310 CDI vans with 3.5 tons GVW and

an integral box body rom SAXAS Nutzahrzeuge Werdau AG. All o the

vehicles are to be equipped with the latest version o the ESP stability

program as standard. This system determines the weight and position

o the reight in order to optimize the vehicles stability. The order also

encompasses a comprehensive service package with a duration o up

to nine years. The package includes the maintenance and repair o the

1,300 vehicles, delivery and pickup o the vans, a tire service, and the

associated vehicle management. Mercedes-Benz Vans has prevailed

over the competition or several reasons. They include the vehicles high

technological standards, high durability, ergonomic driver area, raised

    roo, and low rear-entry eature.

Daimler AG and the Russian commercial vehicle manuacturer GAZ sign

a memorandum o understanding regarding the production o Sprinter

vans. Plans call or the local production o engines, transmissions, axles,

and other components. Depending on the results o several easibility

studies, Mercedes-Benz Vans plans to work together with GAZ in 2011 to

prepare the production acility in Nizhny Novgorod or the assembly o

vehicles and components. Once production has been ramped up, about

25,000 Sprinters will roll o the locations assembly line every year.

Daimler will organize the vehicles sales and service through the exist-

ing Mercedes-Benz dealership network, which will be supported in the

    uture by selected GAZ retailers.

    2011nFebruary:

In a rerun o 2010, Mercedes-Benz Vans is declared the undisputed

winner in the Vans category o this years Image Award competition o

based on a representative survey that assesses the image and amiliar-

ity o leading suppliers o commercial vehicles, as well as products and

services or commercial vehicle feets. Mercedes-Benz has always won

the award in previous years. This year the operators o small feets award

owners o medium-sized and large feets even give 823 image points to

the Mercedes-Benz lineup o Sprinter, Vito, and Vario vans.

Every year, automotive editors rom Finland, Sweden, and Norway get

together to put vans o up to three tons GVW through their paces in ice

and snow. The event is an initiative o the Finnish automotive magazine

Auto, tekniikka ja kuljetus. This time around, the Arctic Van Test 2010 is

won by the Mercedes-Benz Vito 116 CDI. The test criteria include han-

dling, uel consumption, load capacity, and driving per ormance, as well

as arctic-specic attributes such as cold-start behavior, heating, and

    mirror and window de-icing.

    nMarch:

Since March, the Stuttgart police department has been using the

Mercedes-Benz Vito E-CELL in its daily operations. The vehicle has anall-electric drive, which makes it very quiet and absolutely emission-

ree. The Vito E-CELL is not an experimental vehicle; instead, it is a

ull-fedged van that can be used in everyday operations. The batteries

o the Vito E-CELL are located underneath the cargo bed in order to

save space. The state-o-the-art batteries are very powerul and du-

    rable lithium-ion units. They have a capacity o 36 kilowatt-hours, giving

the vehicle a range o around 130 km. The Vito E-CELLs electric motor

has an output o 60 kW and delivers 280 Nm o torque.

In Deutsche Posts delivery center in Waiblingen, Andreas Burkhart,

Head o Sales and Marketing at Mercedes-Benz Vans, presents the keys
