Dear Friends

Have you noticed how the evenings are drawing in and the sun is getting up a bit later each week? It seems unbelievable that winter is drawing nigh and yet the year only started just the other day!

Sitting on the Stoep

‘Beware the Ides of March’. In Shakespeare’s play Julius Caesar these were the words of the Soothsayer in a warning to Julius Caesar before his assassination – and sure enough Caesar was dead before the 15 March had run its course. I would also be in trouble with my Editor if I missed my deadline of the 15th of every month. So we all have our ‘Ides of March’ but hopefully only deadlines and not to be dead like poor old Julius!

My second editor (my wife!) said, “Now you’ve opened the door – you write all about Burns Nicht so what about the Irish?” My reply was that I had concluded with ‘Bagpipe Music’ written by an Irish poet. I didn’t win. My half Irish wife retaliated, “But people don’t know that Louis MacNeice is Irish and anyway they associate bagpipes with Scotland – even though the Irish invented them”.

I was beaten and because two days after my deadline is St Patricks day – probably the most celebrated Saints day in all the world - she demanded that I tell ‘em about it! You can’t go about offending editors – they can just leave out chunks of what you have written and call it ‘editor’s prerogative’ – so I had better tell ‘em about it – after all the Irish also make jolly good whiskey even if it has a superfluous ‘e’.

St Patrick is reputed to have brought Christianity to Ireland some time ago, using the shamrock to explain the Trinity. He died on 17 March 461 hence the day after tomorrow’s special day when the Irish wear green, have parades and generally have a good time. The shortest parade is all of 100 yards (about 90m) long and takes place between two pubs in Dripsey, Cork!

You will also have all heard about leprechauns; those impish creatures who love to meddle and are always involved in something mischievous. They are fairy creatures who, if you manage to capture one, have the magical power to grant three wishes if you set him free. They are solitary, about three foot tall (just less than a metre), spend their time making and mending shoes and putting their coins in a pot of gold at the foot of a rainbow – and no doubt dreaming up mischief! Their coats are red or green and you better believe in them because the Irish do – and, if you don’t believe in them as well they will always be one up on you.

But you have to love the Irish – I do.

“If you’re Irish, come into the parlour, there’s a welcome there for you” says one song of many and remember this special Irish blessing, “May the road rise up to meet you, May the wind always be at your back, ………..”.

So a belated ‘all the best’ to the Irish for St Patrick’s day and I hope that the touch of the Irish is a happy one! (And I wonder who comes up next month?)

Beasties, Trees, Updates and Important Things

And the rains keep coming; and the grass keeps growing; and the water keeps seeping. Difficult to keep up control of the paths and verges but the trees must be loving it. Dainfern house roofs are getting lost in a green (Irish?) canopy, a green protective canopy sheltering, absorbing the bad and making good the air.

Nature’s true colours

This month it is xxxxxxxxxx who has caught the judge’s eye and wins the R100. Enjoy.

Crackerjack

“Up the airy mountain Down the rushy glen We daren’t go a-hunting For fear of little men Wee folk, good folk Trooping all together Green jacket, red cap And a white owl’s feather”

First verse of ‘The Fairies’ by William Allingham 1824 - 1889

By the way Allingham is another Irish poet! So now you know what the little men may look like and that you should beware and take care not to offend. And ‘all the best’ to Dainfern folk – trip lightly through the rushy glen along the Nature Trails, through the woods and leave the little folk in peace.

I think we are all very lucky!

DHA UpdateCosta Spheris - Chairman

Further to the previous communication to residents in December 2011 we inform residents that, subject

to the resolution of certain environmental and compensation issues, a comprehensive and acceptable

agreement between Johannesburg Water, Steyn City and the DHA should be finalised soon, the content

of which shall be posted on the Dainfern website.

450mm sewer upgradeHaving discussed the upgrading of the collecter sewer on the North bank of the Jukskei with the professional teams, we have established that this upgrade will have no impact on the golf course per se as the servitude essentially follows the Jukskei River course. There may be a minimal and brief impact to the golf driving range.

Proposed new 750mm outfall sewerDetails of this upgrade were comprehensively dealt with in the December newsletter. Of importance is that there will be no impact in any of the greens or bunkers and that the

course will be fully operational with only the 8th men’s tee being temporarily affected. Men will utilise the ladies tee during the brief interruption. We are awaiting the results of geo technical tests to ascertain the duration of the upgrade, but it is envisaged that both upgrades will take no longer than 6 months. The result will be a much improved sewer infrastructure resulting in the decommissioning of the inefficient pumphouse and an end to the nauseating sewer spills and overflowing sewer man holes discharging into the Jukskei.

PROPOSED SEWER LINE UPGRADES

Capturing the spirit of French Style...Simple yet elegant - unaffected by decor trends and fashion, this timeless home decorating style fits comfortably into any home without feeling antique.

Inspired by the colours and textures of the French countryside and based on the love and respect of traditions, natural materials and craftsmanship, the heart of the style focuses on harmony, scale and balance and what feels right.

Interior Ideas

If you enjoy...

• do-it-yourself-decor• stylish simplicity• up-cycling or re-inventing• a touch of history• mixing and matching

...then I do believe you will love the spirit of this traditional home decorating style, which you will find so easy to achieve.

The style is relaxed and comfortable, giving the freedom to mix old and new, be creative and combine the unexpected with the norm.

French Country décor is warm and inviting with its own unique charm, which is often derived from the unexpected mixing of furniture, functional items and other decorative aspects that you wouldn't normally expect to see grouped together. It is this element of surprise that gives it that air of Je ne sais quoi, setting it apart from other country styles.

French country decorating is born from a simplistic lifestyle built on traditions and the preservation of heirlooms from different periods in history, resulting in a special mix of décor which over time has evolved into a charming style.

It is only in recent years that the beauty of this unique style found in French country homes - with its melting pot of simplistic decor, comfort, elegance and old world charm - has caught the attention of interior designers.

The look and feel is relaxed and casual and translates well into modern interiors. It can either be rustic and functional or refined and elegant, but rustic and functional does not mean short on comfort or elegance.

There are many factors that make up the style as a whole which cannot be defined in a short paragraph or two.

So where do we begin? As a starting point we can look to the French for inspiration.

Flower of the Month

Strelitzia

Description of African daisy: The plant grows to 2 m (6.6 ft) tall, with large, strong leaves 25–70 cm (9.8–28 in) long and 10–30 cm (3.9–12 in) broad, produced on petioles up to 1 m (39 in) long. The leaves are evergreen and arranged in two ranks, making a fan-shaped crown. The flowers stand above the foliage at the tips of long stalks. The hard, beak-like sheath from which the flower emerges is termed the spathe. This is placed perpendicular to the stem, which gives it the appearance of a bird's head and beak; it makes a durable perch for holding the sunbirds which pollinate the flowers. The flowers, which emerge one at a time from the spathe, consist of three brilliant orange sepals and three purplish-blue petals. Two of the blue petals are joined together to form an arrow-like nectary. When the sunbirds sit to drink the nectar, the petals open to cover their feet in pollen.Ref: Wikipedia.org

Strelitzia reginae | Crane Flower or Bird of Paradise

Strelitzia reginae is a flowering plant indigenous to South Africa. Common names include Strelitzia, Crane Flower or Bird of Paradise, though these names are also collectively applied to other species in the genus Strelitzia. Its scientific name commemorates Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz.

Fact: Charlotte of Meklenburg (19 May 1744 – 17 Nov 1818) was the Queen consort of the United Kingdom as the wife of King George III. She was also the electress consort of Hanover in the Holy Roman Empire until the promotion of her husband to King of Hanover on 12 October 1814, which made her Queen consort of Hanover. Queen Charlotte was a patroness of the arts, known to Johann Christian Bach and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, among others.

She was also an amateur botanist who helped expand Kew Gardens. George III and Charlotte had 15 children, 13 of whom survived to adulthood.

Parsley Tree, Parsnip Tree, Wildepietersieliebos, Mmakatlala (N.So), Serethe (Tsw),

Description and Uses Gracefully drooping foliage, dark-copper satin-smooth glossy bark, and conspicuous heads of "carroty" flowers make the Parsley Tree and unusual and pleasing garden subject. Sometimes multi-stemmed, the trunks (bark) may be somewhat waxyin appearance, with papery layers that peel off in horisontal strips to reveal an ultra-smooth and shiny underbark. The light-green to grey-green leaves turn from yellow to red in autumn, and have a distinctive herby smell when crushed. Dense rounded heads of tiny strong-smelling green to yellow flowers are followed by small oval three-winged fruits.

The flowers attract a variety of pollinating insects, so Black and Whitebellied Sunbirds, Blackeyed Bulbul, Fiscal Shrike and Blackcollared and Crested Barbets may visit your garden.

Musical bows are made from the soft wood. The plant contains a volatile oil that has antifungal and antibacterial

activity. Remedies prepared from the roots are used to treat nervous disorders, coughts, fevers and asthma. Wood smoke is inhaled to still headaches.

Cultivation Quickly and easily propagated from seed. Plant three of these fairly fast growing and adaptable trees in a group, on a lawn, where the attractive bark can show up to advantage. Or, position one on a large rockery, or in a shrub border.

Natural DistributionVery widely distributed in many different habitats and occurs naturally on rocky outcrops, in forests (where it can reach 20m) and on forest margins, from South Africa to Tanzania. NTN 568.1

The Dragon Fly

Dragonflies have a pair of slender wings made up of intricate net-like veins. They are active during the daytime hunting for food and mating. They can fly in all directions including backwards. They can also hover like a helicopter. Dragonflies can fly as fast as most birds with top speeds of 53 miles per hour.

Dragonflies typically eat our least favourite insect the mosquito, as well as small flies and bees.

Dragonflies are actually water creatures. Their eggs hatch in lakes, streams, and other wetlands. Female dragonflies lay up to 100,000 at a time. They hatch in about two weeks into fairly unattractive creatures call nymphs. Most of their life is spent as a nymph, up to three years, as opposed to four months as a dragonfly. The nymphs actually live

under the water and have gills for breathing. They feed on the larvae of mosquitoes and tadpoles.

When a nymph finally matures it come out of the water at night and attaches to the stem of a plant where it sheds its skin, which is called molting. Molting takes about two hours. As the skin splits open, the head, body, legs, and wings of the dragonfly appear. When the sun rises in the morning the new dragonfly is ready to fly and hunt.

Dragonflies do not sting or bite people. There are more than 5,000 species of dragonflies in the world. They have been around since the time of dinosaurs, more than 300 million years ago. In those days dragonflies were considerably larger than they are today, with wingspans of more than two feet.

Dragonfly eyes contain about 30,000 separate lenses and can distinguish colours. The eyes make up a large part of the dragonfly’s head and are positioned so that it has a full 360-degree field of vision. They cannot distinguish detail very well, and see things in a mosaic pattern.

A very common and distinctive bird, easily told apart from the Crowned Plover, though the same size(30cm)

A pied plover with only black, white and grey feathers. The crown is white, the wings and mantle are grey, lower belly is white, with the rest of the body boldly black. The beak and legs are black.

There is no mistaking this bird! The call is a monotonous clink, like a hammer on an anvil, hence the name, much loudly repeated when disturbed.

Its nesting site and aggressive behaviour are similar to the Crowned Plover. Both species are often found feeding close together

We are in the process of finalising the knockout competitions (which have all have to be completed before the AGM date of 22 May) and we have already started fast and furious with both the Pecanwood Friendly League as well as the Gauteng League for 2012. For both the league as well as the knockout competitions which are based on a match play format, I have included a few of the rules which are different from normal competitions so that you well informed in this regard. Therefore, in match play :- A player may practice anywhere on the course, on the

day of the match.

- If you play a stroke and your ball hits your opponent, her caddie, or her equipment – you can choose whether to replay the stroke or accept it and play your next shot from where it comes to rest.

- If a player (when starting a hole), plays the ball from outside the teeing ground, there is no penalty – but the opponent may immediately require the player to cancel the stroke and play a ball from within the teeing ground.

- If a putt from the putting green hits another ball at rest on the putting green, whether it is your side or your opponent’s there is no penalty in match play (whereas there is a 2 stroke penalty in stroke play).

- If a match is discontinued by agreement, e.g. due to bad weather, the match must be resumed from where it was discontinued - the players do not start the round again.

Just a friendly reminder that the 2012 Ladies Club Championship will take place on 3 & 4 May. This year we will incorporate the inaugural Seniors Stableford Competition during the Club Championship event. All ladies that are 60 and over in 2012 will be able to play in this one-day event (on the 4 May) which will be an individual stableford format and the use of golf carts will be permitted.

The AGM is on the 22 May and the nomination forms for the new committee is on the notice board for completion. The Ladies Captain has to be a Full Golf Member to be eligible.

Clockwise from top left: Brenda Gilbert Trophy Winner - Janet Swanepoel; Medal Trophy Silver Winner - Joyce Hughes; Susanne Kannove Trophy Winners - Sandy Todd & Tracy Ottley; Wil-Lee Trophy Winners - Joyce Hughes & Jeanne Nicol; Pam Golding Day with Jenny Williams, Sally Little & Maxi Geyer, Medal Trophy Bronze Winner - Debbie Retief.

Health Coach

What is a Health Coach? Are you living your life in a way that improves you health? If so – fantastic! If you have got lost somewhere along the way, you may need a health coach

Most of us are hoping for a long and healthy life – free of pain, disease and suffering. So a lifestyle that improves your health should be what we are aiming at. The ad-vice to help this changes daily, even from professionals and this can be so confusing. Is milk good for you or not? Should I eat for my blood type or be a vegetarian? What is the whole thing on soy? How much do I have to exercise?

A health coach will benefit you in many ways. Using an individual approach, they will encourage and show you the steps to a healthy lifestyle.

They will monitor your diet and exercise. They will ensure you are on track and doing all you need in terms of your personal work and they can keep you on track for your goals and keep you accountable.

Often it’s not the broccoli on your plate but the love in your life.

If you would like a FREE Health History consultation to see if you could benefit from a health coach, phone me, Monica Condy, on 082 459 1539, or email me at [email protected]

Dainfern Football Club

Start of 2012 Season

Dino Mites (3 – 5 year olds) – This group is proving extremely popular this season and we have had an influx of applications. The way things are going it looks like we will be able to form a Dino Mite. By the way, 2 of our players are only two years old. Training for the Dino Mites is held on Wednesdays between 4pm and 4.45pm and we are still welcoming new players.

Little League - Local Championship & SAFA Inter-club League (Under 6 – Under 11) More than 100 players have already registered in this group and the numbers are growing at a fast rate. We are hoping to double this figure for the season and so far things are looking good. Training for these age groups is held on Mondays and Wednesdays between 5pm and 6pm.

Junior SAFA League (Under 12 – Under 17) – We are having some difficulty attracting players in this age group. Is it because they have found that chasing the girls is far more fun than chasing a soccer ball? Come on guys, there is time for both!! Training is held on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 5pm and 6-30pm.

Seniors SAFA League – Our Seniors started training 2 weeks ago and are looking good to challenge for silverware this season. We are still looking for a few additional

players to complete the squad. Training is on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 7pm and 9pm. although the boys are planning to train 4 or 5 days a week to prepare for the League which kick- off on 31st March.

Vet's SAFA League - Our Vet's team is ready to start practicing and playing. A huge thank you to Kevin Pretorius and the Vet's team for their ongoing support.

So, all in all things are looking good for Dainfern Football Club.

Training got off to a great start on Monday 5 March and it was good to see the kids enjoying themselves on the field again. On the subject of the field, much work has been done and it should be in pristine condition in the next few weeks. We are also in the process of renovating our old store room to serve as an office for the Football Club. The intention is that our admin team will be working from the office at the Pavilion during practice hours, which will make it a lot easier for club members to resolve queries and administration documentation during practice times.

Let’s keep the ball rolling!!

Anyone interested in joining can register at the Pavilion, Dainfern Football Club, Highgate Village, Dainfern Golf and Country Estate on Mondays to Thursdays between 5pm and 6-30pm and Saturdays between 9am and 11am. Both resident and non-resident applicants are welcome.

We confirm that invoices for this year have been e-mailed to all players who have handed in the registration documentation. Any registered members who have not received an invoice from the Club please contact Mike Waldron on 082 373 6889 or [email protected].
