“We are the first to host an event on the Green Deal
in Brussels”, claimed the president of our German
EDA member MIV, Peter Stahl (Hochland) when
welcoming to the MIV Milk Summit in the Bavarian
‘Embassy’ in Brussels on 20 February 2020.
Together with MEP Herbert Dorfmann (EPP, IT), DG
AGRI special advisor Cristina Lobillo Borrero and
the President of the Bavarian Farmers’ Association,
MIV chair Peter Stahl, discussed both the
importance of the Green Deal ambitions and its
impact on dairy and beyond: “Sustainability will
cost money, but unsustainable production is also
costly”, concluded Peter Stahl.
“French cheese excellence has an outstanding
reputation across the globe. It is an honour for me to
be appointed an official jury member and to discuss
and decide which of the cheeses deserves the gold,
silver or bronze leaf as an official recognition from

Hans Ingels, DG GROWTH, exchanged with EDA on
the Single Market Barriers Report that will be
published by the European Commission on 10
March 2020. It was for us the occasion to highlight
the decline of the Single Market for milk and dairy
over the past years: national mandatory origin
labelling schemes, a huge diversity of over-
simplistic systems of nutrition labelling within the
EU, and divergent animal welfare or environment
labelling projects have built up barriers within the
Union.
We can expect a rather general report that will not
refer to specific sectors affected by trade barriers,
so the food sector will most probably not be
mentioned as such. However, a working document
will accompany the communication and tackle
about 15 categories of identified barriers to trade.

Simon Tucker, Director Global Stakeholder Affairs
at Fonterra and former NZ Ambassador in Canada,
underlined during his visit at EDA in Brussels the
shared and strong commitment of Fonterra and the
NZ dairy sector for a more sustainable dairy future:
“We are a proud partner of the ► EDA Dairy
Environmental Footprint Project and it is with
great interest that we follow the European discussion
around Green Deal and the Farm to Fork strategy.”
Ahead of the planned Brussels visit of the Fonterra
CEO in summer 2020, Simon Tucker also used this
opportunity to exchange with EDA secretary
general Alexander Anton on ► our updated EDA
Focus “Dairy Trade & New Zealand”.
