PRIZE=free registration for the 2014 Dakar
was designed and created. Three rallies and two Bajas will support this broad initiative to detect the virtuosos of the handlebars and steering wheel. At each of them, the least experienced competitors (*) may register for the Dakar Challenge. At the end of the races, the best in the general classification will win registration for the 2014 Dakar.
* Never having participated in the Dakar, or finished amongst the first 10 in an FIM all-terrain rally (motorbikes), not having been in the list of FIA priority drivers (cars) and/or the Elite ASO lists.
Backed by its success in 2012, and the performance of its winners on the 2013 Dakar, the Dakar Challenge once again moves to a higher gear, with a selection extended to 5 events, now for 8 crowns.
The Challenge will be contested on three continents: the Americas: North and South, Africa and Oceania. At the departure of the 2014 Dakar, there will be two representatives for each event: one on motorbikes and one in cars.
The all-terrain rallies that are contested throughout the season will bring together enthusiasts from all countries and all directions. Often amateurs, these drivers sometimes reveal talent that cries out to be expressed against the best competitors in the discipline. It is precisely to give the most promising of them the opportunity to shine on the reference event that the Dakar Challenge
Sheer tenacity had its reward on Sunday 23 June 2013 when Thomas Rundle and Juan Möhr won themselves a free entry into next year’s Dakar Rally in South America.
Rundle and Möhr won the Dakar Challenge which was run in conjunction with the Toyota Kalahari Botswana 1000 Desert Race, round four of the Donaldson Cross-
Country Championship, which ended at Kumakwane on Sunday. The prize for winning the Dakar Challenge is a free entry into the world’s toughest motorsport event
and Rundle and Möhr overcame a day of trials and tribulations to book their passage to South America.
Rundle and Möhr were lying second to Century Racing CR3 crew Colin Matthews and Alan Smith after day one of the race. When Matthews and Smith fell by the
wayside with a gearbox problem, Rundle and Möhr moved into the lead but on the first loop of racing section two lost fourth, fifth and sixth gears.
There was nothing their technical crew could do at the compulsory 15-minute service halt, and Rundle and Möhr decided to soldier on. Less than 10 kilometres into the
final loop the pair then also lost first and second gears, and were forced to finish the rest of the race in third gear.
“There was nothing we could do about it, but Juan and I were determined to stick it out,” said Rundle. “It was a bit stressful as we gradually dropped down the field but
sixth overall was enough to give us the Dakar win. I guess sheer stubbornness has its rewards.”

At the end of June, Mr Thomas Rundle approached the High Performance Centre based in Pretoria to discuss his approach over the next 6 months in preparation for the Dakar taking place in January 2014. In the first week of July Mr. Rundle began his program at the HPC with a series of physical, physiological and movement analysis screenings. Based on his test results and under the guidance of the Instititue for Sport Research a strength and conditioning program was put together that would best prepare Mr. Rundle for the challenges he will face during the race. His training has been broken down into 3 different training phases over the next 6 months which include a general preparation phase of basic training, a strength phase and finishing with an endurance phase. This training will ensure Mr. Rundle is fully prepared physically for the event to come. His training includes 3 supervised strength and conditioning sessions in which he is monitored and guided to get the most out of every session. In addition to Mr. Rundle’s physical training he has also consulted our dietician Nicki de Villers. In this consultation his daily energy intake was calculated based on his activity levels and necessary requirements to create a tailored eating plan for Mr. Rundle. This will be monitored and adjusted along with his training as he progresses through each phase of preparation. Kind regards Douglas Rathbone Sport Scientist ISR-High Performance Centre [email protected]
