PRELATE

Our lodge is a great place – friendly people, entertainment, activities. One of the things that makes this lodgeso great is the commitment of members who volunteer. Allfraternal organizations relay on volunteers to assist in various waysand this lodge is very fortunate to have many volunteers. A recentexample of volunteerism is the design and creation of the July 4th

float representing our lodge in the Dale City parade. “United WeStand” was such a hit with the judges that the float won FirstPlace. Congratulations to all volunteers involved in this effort.

There are many other ways volunteers make this lodgewhat it is: stocking coolers, emptying trash, grill chicken and ribson Mondays in the summer, taco night on Tuesdays, chicken wingsevery Wednesday, assist on Friday seafood night, assist onSaturday steak night, and grounds cleanup.

The Dale City Moose Lodge is what we make it. Thankyou to all who volunteer and I encourage others to join thesevolunteers. At this time, volunteers for Wednesday Wing Nightare especially needed. See Billy Moriority if you can help withwings. Even better – join with two or three friends and form aWing Team and create some tasty treats.

Please joint me in recognizing three members who havecontributed so much to the lodge by volunteers:

2010-11 Moose of the Year Don O’Connor 2010-11 Rookie of the Year Rick Moore 2010-11 Legionnaire of the Year Bob Moore

Thanks to all volunteers. There are many ways to help– just step up!

GOODBYE TO THOSECRAZY, HAZY DAYS OF SUMMER

Dear Moose Friends,

Thank you to everyone who participated in

our blood drive on June 26 with your time, bakedth

goods, and, of course, your blood.

Special thanks to Cindy O’Connor, Ellen

Howard, Jan Curtis, Stephenie Collins, and Nellie

Sacra for their efforts to ensure the blood drive was

friendly and successful. Also, thank you to Mary

Crawford and Kamela Hutchins who cooked to order

for the entire Red Cross staff and volunteers and the

Men of the Moose for picking up the food bill. It was

appreciated by all.

We collected 37 pints of blood, 9 people were

deferred, and one could not quite fill the bag.

Thank you to all who “ROLLED” up their

sleeves to make someone’s life better.

FIBROMYALGIA

The series of articles on arthritis were interrupted by the information on transplant and organdonation. This month the series on arthritis continues. If you remember, the term arthritis describesconditions that affect joints, the tissues around the joints, and other connective tissue. This articleaddresses fibromyalgia.

Fibromyalgia is the most common arthritis-related illness after osteoarthritis. More than 12million Americans have fibromyalgia. Most of them are women ranging in age from 25 to 60.Women are 10 times more likely to get this disease than men.

Fibromyalgia is a set of symptoms. It causes one to ache all over. There is cripplingfatigue–even on arising. Specific tender points on the body may be painful to touch. Swelling, disturbances in deep-level (restful) sleep, and mood disturbances or depression also may beexperienced. Muscles may feel like they have been overworked or pulled with no exercise stimulus.Sometimes muscles will twitch, burn, or have deep stabbing pain. Other symptoms include:Abdominal pain; anxiety and depression; chronic headaches; difficulty maintaining sleep; drynessin mouth, nose, and eyes; fatigue upon arising; hypersensitivity to cold and/or heat; inability toconcentrate (called “fibro fog”); incontinence; irritable bowel syndrome; numbness or tingling in thefingers and feet; painful menstrual cramps; and stiffness.

Diagnosis of fibromyalgia is often difficult and can be misdiagnosed. There are no tests todiagnose fibromyalgia. Some lab tests will be done to rule out other causes of the symptoms.Diagnosis is based on symptoms and to be diagnosed with fibromyalgia, a person must meet thecriteria established by the American College of Rheumatology.

There is no cure and no treatment that will address all of the fibromyalgia symptoms. TheFDA has approved three drugs for treatment: Lyrica, Cymbalta, and Savella.

Low doses of drugs such as Flexeril, Cycloflex, Flexiban, Elavil, or Endep have been foundto be effective. Antidepressants such as Effexor, Prozac, Paxil, and Zoloft also are useful. Ultramis a pain-relieving medicine that can be helpful and the anti-epileptic drug Neurontin has been foundto be promising for fibromyalgia treatment. The nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS)have not been found to be effective.

Alternative therapies such as massage can help manage the symptoms of fibromyalgia. TheAmerican Pain Society recommends moderately intense aerobic exercise two or three times a week. They also endorse clinician-assisted treatments such as hypnosis, acupuncture, therapeutic massage, and chiropractic manipulations for pain relief.

Along with alternative therapies, it is important to allow time each day to rest and relax.Relaxation therapies such as deep muscle relaxation or deep breathing exercises may help reduce theadded stress that can trigger fibromyalgia symptoms. Having a regularly scheduled bedtime also isimportant as sleep is essential to let the body repair itself.
