Transport systems evolve: traditionally, they have integrated competencies in Industrial - mainly Mechanical and somehow Electrical -and Civil Engineering.

In recent years a number of technological proposals from the fields of ICT have arisen and been proposed in literature, then a variety of devices and products appeared on the international markets.

We need now to enhance Transport systems through new technologies. The new aims result safety, security, quality (e.g., less queues) and efficiency of the transport systems for passengers and freight, optimising the use of natural resources and respecting the environment.

As a consequence, we need to integer or merging, with Transport systems - so Mechanics and Civil engineering - competencies on Telecommunications, Information technologies, Electronics and Automatics, to pursue the so-called “ITS”.

To pursue this aim, an apposite web site on an innovative multimedia platform for e-learning on ITS and infomobilityhas been developed by the POLITECNICO DI TORINO.

It has been supported by the Italian Ministries of Transport andInfrastructures (I), for developing a part of the ITS e-learning educational material, with specific reference to a general introduction to ITS and the Italian ITS Framework Architecture.

ITS: a definitionITS integrate telecommunications, electronics and information technologies - in short, ‘telematics’ - with transport engineering in order to plan, design, operate, maintain and manage transport systems.

This integration aims to improve safety, security, quality and efficiency of the transport systems for passengers and freight, optimising the use of natural resources and respecting the environment.

To achieve such aims, ITS require procedures, systems and devices to allow the collection, communication, analysis and distribution of information and data among moving subjects, the transport infrastructure and information technology applications.

As far as ITS deal with information technologies and mobility of people, may also be defined as “Infomobility”; it may involve road transport or any other mode as well as their interactions.

As regards the e-learning platform, a cutting-edge multimedia platform designed specifically to meet e-learning requirements has been developed and at present subject to enhancement.

Some specific contents of the e-learning platform:

it contains introduction to basics technologies for ITS;each module contains a list of ITS subjects;each subject has typically either a simulation or at least some pictures or graphs;the platform contains numerous vocally commented – with “text to speech” – simulations, for better understanding;a number of official documents of EU are readable or downloadable;some specific subjects are presented in a nested logic, to be investigated according to the previous knowledge of the user-reader;each module includes a number of multiple choice tests at the end of it; passing positively a test allows to enter the subsequent level of the subject.

Some examples

Each modulecontains a list of

subjects

Each subject may be studied

separately from the others

Some examples

A number of vocally commented – with “text to speech” - re-playable simulations allow a

rapid and better understanding of the specific topics

The e-learning contains the introduction to basic technologies of ITS

Some examplesEach module

includes a numberof multiple choicetests at the end;

answers are recorded by the

server

Each subject contains typically either a

simulation or at least some pictures or graphs

for illustrating it in a better way

Short, illustrated and – sometimes -

vocally commented

descriptions are more suitable for

a rapid understanding of

the topic
