1 Find Culture in The Dallas Arts District:

A mix of performing and visual arts institutions, the district spans 19

blocks, making it the nation’s largest urban arts district. Grab a bite from one

of the food trucks and enjoy the outdoor sculptures.

2 Enjoy Klyde Warren Park:

Picnic-worthy lawn? Check. Playground for the kiddos? Check. Place for the pooch? Check. This brand-new park bordering the Dallas Arts District has it all.

3 Shop the Downtown Flagship

Neiman Marcus: Style arbiter and luxury purveyor Neiman Marcus elevated shopping from an everyday

errand to an experience. Its flagship location, which opened in 1907, is a must,

especially at Christmas.

4 Scoot Your Boots at

Cowboys Red River:

Whether your boots just came out of the box or the barn, you’ll

have a good time two-stepping around Cowboy’s dance floor. Relax—they offer lessons. Enjoy a drink and then test your mettle on the mechanical bull.

5 Tour The

Sixth Floor Museum: President John F. Kennedy was assassinated 50 years ago, but his life and legacy still fascinate. The

museum, housed in the building where a sniper’s nest and rifle were found, presents an impartial view of the tragic piece of Dallas history.

6 Buy or Browse at Highland Park

Village: The upscale retail develop-ment, designated a National Historic Landmark, was cutting-edge when it opened in 1931. Its boutiques and Spanish architecture still wow. In spring 2013, the village welcomes Dior to the neighborhood.

7 Marvel at the Perot Museum of Nature and

Science: Dallas’ new gem features

11 permanent exhibits, including a children’s museum and universe hall, while adults are invited to

after-hours Social Science programs,

complete with hands-on experiments and cocktails.

8 Taste Our Gourmet Fare: Big-name chefs love Big D;

you’ll love what they bring to the table, especially Tim Byres, chef and co-owner of SMOKE. He was named People’s Best New Chef for 2012 by Food & Wine magazine.

9 Visit George W. Bush Presidential

Library and Museum: On the campus of Southern Methodist University, Laura Bush’s alma mater, the

state-of-the-art research center and museum features archives

and personal artifacts from the Bush administration.

10 Cheer on the

Biggest Names in Sports: In 2011, Sporting News ranked Dallas the No. 1 city for sports. With five professional teams – the Cowboys, Mavericks, Stars, Rangers and the FC Dallas soccer team – and stellar venues like the behemoth Cowboys Stadium and the American Airlines Center, Dallas sports fans and visitors always have something to cheer for.

Big Things Happen HereThink you know Dallas? You might be surprised. It’s more than a business mecca. It’s not just a Fortune 500 hotbed. It’s

also a professional sports hub. An arts and culture pacesetter.

A culinary capital and a shopping destination.

You can’t deny it—Dallas has much to love. Locals have long known that, and when it was time to choose a new tagline and logo for the city, thousands of them weighed in. With that feedback, the Dallas

Convention & Visitors Bureau introduces a new brand campaign: “Big Things Happen Here.”

Watch for this new campaign across multiple media channels, and come discover for yourself what Dallas has to offer. Then, let us know what Big Things Happen Here for you.

EVENTS

May 4–august 18Summer Adventures at Fair Park 214-428-8000, fairparkfun.comA ride on the tallest Ferris wheel in North America, the Texas Star, is a rite of passage in the Lone Star State. It used to be that the only opportunity to climb into its gondolas was during the Texas State Fair at Fair Park, but not anymore.

Beginning in May, Fair Park opens to those seeking family-friendly fun all summer long. And there’s a brand-new attraction taking Fair Park’s appeal to new heights: Top o’ Texas. The tallest tower ride in the country, it offers amazing skyline views. Once you’ve checked that off your list, get soaked on the Flume Ride, challenge your son to a bumper car duel and pick your pony on the Dentzel Carousel.

When you need a break from the rides, stroll through the Midway, and grab a Fletcher’s Corny Dog. Later, take in the Bird Encounter show or visit the Children’s Aquarium.

*Open weekends only beginning May 4; open daily beginning June 7.

Fall 2013Opening of the Rory Meyers Children’s Adventure Garden, Dallas Arboretum214-515-6500, dallasarboretum.orgEqual parts amusement park, educational facility and botanical wonderland, the Rory Meyers Children’s Adventure Garden at the Dallas Arboretum flips the idea of a children’s garden on its head.

Seventeen indoor and outdoor galleries spread across eight acres, creating playgrounds of fun for every age. Toddlers scale a nine-foot ant and play in a plant petting zoo. School-age children enter a “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids” world, where giant flowers tower and exhibits teach photosynthesis. Older kids explore art, math and science in the Kaleidoscope Gallery and dig

into nature in the Discovery Center’s plant and soil labs.

A maze, an acre of wetlands and a rooftop garden are just a few of the garden’s many attractions, but a sure favorite will be the 240-foot-long Texas Skywalk through a canopy of trees.

Want to learn about nature in nature? This is the place.

NoveMber 16City Lights, Downtown Dallas214-744-1270, downtowndallas.orgCity Lights is as much a part of the holiday season as eggnog and candy canes. In fact, there’s no better place to embrace your inner elf than at City Lights’ opening night. This kick-off for the holiday season takes place on Main Street and includes an outdoor market and musical performances. But it’s the Holiday Light Show, with fireworks, lights along Main Street, and the lighting of the 65-foot tree, that elicits the biggest oohs and aahs from the crowd.

Bring your wish list in case you get a chance to bend the ear of the big guy. Santa always makes an impressive City Lights entrance. The holiday windows at Neiman Marcus debut this night as well (be sure to let your kids explore the Neiman Marcus crawl tubes, which let them enter the fantasy world). If you miss the Saturday celebration, don’t become a Grinch. City Lights includes special events and holiday program-ming all season long.

The Bishop Arts District and the greater Oak

Cliff neighborhood are full of independent and quirky boutique shops, restaurants and arts.

Spend an afternoon browsing the shops’

local products and you’ll find unique Dallas

souvenirs. Stroll the sidewalks, admire the artistic graffiti and pause to listen to a street musician. Sample the authentic Southern cuisine, Mexican tacos or Texas BBQ, then catch an independent film or local band. Several shops cater to men, and Bishop Arts is an LGBT-friendly area.

If you’ve never experienced a traditional, Southern-style Sunday brunch, you’ll find it here in several restaurants. Enjoy chicken and waffles, shrimp and grits, mac-n-cheese, migas, mimosas, locally roasted coffee and more. Brunch is very popular, so be prepared to wait or pass the time in nearby shops.

Bishop Arts District is most active during dinner on weeknights or any time on weekends. Street festivals are common on spring and autumn weekends. Some businesses are closed on Mondays. On weekdays, most restaurants open around 5pm, so call ahead to check. bishopartsdistrict.weebly.com

Deep Ellum first got its reputation as an arts and music district in the early 1900s. It was wildly popular during its heyday, but by 2007, many long-established businesses had closed. Fortunately, several of those businesses have reopened and new hotspots have

moved in, making Deep Ellum a vibrant

entertainment destination once again.

This is where you’ll find several of the city’s best dive bars, live music

bars and tattoo parlors. It’s also home

to Dallas’ first painted bike lanes and two restau-

rants featured on The Food Network’s “Diners, Drive-ins & Dives” (Twisted Root Burger Co. and Il Cane Rosso, see next page). With its historic buildings, colorful murals and giant sculp-tures, Deep Ellum is a hot spot for photo opportunities.

(Parking tip: Some businesses have free parking lots, but bring coins and bills just in case. Public parking lot spaces tend to cost $2–5 cash. Some streets’ coin meters are free 6am–7pm.)

Uptown Dallas is a very popular district

for locals and visitors to enjoy shopping, patio dining, nightlife and weekend brunch. This see-and-be-

seen part of Dallas is where you’re most

likely to run into local and

international millionaires and celebrities, and many fashionable Dallasites.

Uptown is slightly north, or “up,” from downtown Dallas and is easily accessible by the free M-Line Trolley. The backbone of activity is McKinney Avenue, from North St. Paul Street to Blackburn Street, bordered on the north by the Katy Trail

and to the south by Woodall Rodg-ers Freeway.

Most Uptown businesses feature a heated and cooled indoor/outdoor patio to maximize our great Texas weather. As a result, fair weather days bring bustle and

lively fun to Uptown, particularly Friday through

Sunday. (Tip: Most establish-ments offer free valet service.)

You may have already

seen parts of this district in scenes from the new rendition

of the “Dallas” TV

show. From Main Street in the central part of downtown to the neighborhood south of Interstate 30 along Lamar Street—dubbed “South Side,”—you’ll find a historic, yet newly blossoming district brimming with lofts, dining, night-life and entertainment.

The South Side’s anchor building, South Side on Lamar, was built in 1910 as the Sears, Roebuck & Co.’s Catalog and Merchandising Center. When it was converted to apartments and business spaces in 2000, they kept much of the original warehouse features. South

Oak Lawn Avenue connects the Cedar

Springs area to the Dallas Design District both in traffic flow and in the businesses’ keen appreciation

of the arts, design, food and nightlife.

The Dallas Design District is where you will find that original art or antique showpiece that you’ve been hunting for. Dozens of antiques shops, art galleries and designer showrooms line the streets. Some galleries operate by interior designer appointments only, but many are open to the public without an appointment. Spend the afternoon gallery hopping, and then stay for an artfully plated dinner in one of several new fine dining restaurants.

Klyde warren parkFind Your Zen in the City

The Big Idea In the beginning, organizers were picturing a simple space to toss Frisbees and go for walks. Private funding began to roll in and creative wheels started churning out dreams of a kid’s area, performance stage, eateries, a dog park and more, all leading to the grand park we enjoy today.

Child’s PlayKlyde Warren Park’s two children’s playgrounds are divided up into a toddler’s area and an older kid’s area that combined hold up to 100 children. Kiddos can burn off some serious energy playing around the Rotary Learning Tree and the Butterfly Pavilion fountain feature, climbing on the big molecule and hitting the Reading & Games Room where they’ll find a lending library of books and magazines to read under the storytelling tree.

EatRelish and Savor, a Thomas Phifer-designed restaurant concept, is slated to open in late summer 2013 and will feature a sit-down restaurant and take-out café. Visit the variety of food trucks that stop here from 11am to 4pm every day, including the permanently parked Relish Burger truck whose chefs mix “awesome relishes into the burgers so those great toppings don’t fall off.”

Simply called The Park by Dallasites, Klyde Warren Park opens up 5.2 acres of urban green space on the edge of the 19-block Dallas Arts District (the country’s largest). The structural masterpiece rests atop Woodall Rodgers Freeway, connecting Downtown to Uptown, and is quickly becoming a Dallas icon and the perfect place to enjoy a picnic or sneak in a sunny mid-day nap under the Dallas skyline.

From dancing and movies to yoga and kid’s games, we invite you to experience Klyde Warren Park.

1 Summer Adventures at Fair Park

From the brilliant imaginations that bring you the State Fair of Texas

comes a summer of activities just for kids. The new Fair Park attraction, open May 3–mid-August, will be packed with midway games, rides, fair

food and other amusements for little ones.

2 Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Gardens

Offering the flexibility often required when touring with kids, the arboretum has a downloadable Kids’ Discovery Guide that will take you through the gardens at your

own pace while using clues to hunt for bronze statues.

3 Texas Rangers Baseball Games

Baseball fans 13 and under can sign up to be Jr. Rangers, which for $20 gets you a bunch of Rangers gear and stickers, vouchers for select free games and front-of-the-line access to

run the bases every Sunday afternoon.

Dallas: Family Style

Family time in Dallas means never having to say “I’m boooored.” Keep the kids busy with these 10 area attractions.

Kid-Approved Dallas DiningIn Dallas, having kids doesn’t doom you to fast-food chicken nuggets. Many of the city’s restaurateurs pride themselves on providing spaces and menus that give kids and parents something to smile about.

Chicken Scratch, Crossroads Diner, Dough Pizzeria and Lockhart Smoke-house have been called tops for kids by CultureMap Dallas for good, wholesome food and kid-friendly atmospheres. And a plethora of Dallas barbecue joints wouldn’t bat an eye at anyone eating with their hands—check out Sammy’s Bar-B-Q, Mac’s Barbecue or Off the Bone Barbeque.

Dallas Dining Trend: PlayscapesOne of the greatest new dining trends are playscapes, where parents can relax on a patio with a drink within sight of a playground keeping their kids occupied. Chicken Scratch churns out picnic- worthy fried chicken, hand-made biscuits, fruity popsicles with a side of tetherball and hopscotch. At DreamCa-fe’s weekend brunch, you eat ricotta pancakes and sip mimosas while your kids bounce around the jungle gym. Mommy message boards also mention Garden Cafe, Lombardi’s Cibus, Si Tapas and Spanish Cuisine as places with good food and room for kiddos to run.

Valentino, Cartier and Louis Vuitton.

The amazing couture isn’t the only thing turning heads. NorthPark Center’s world-class art collection features acclaimed 20th century works sprinkled throughout the grounds and the 1.4-acre CenterPark Garden. Artwork by Andy Warhol, Frank Stella, Barry Flanagan and Beverly Pepper, among others, adds to the ambiance.

Award-winning architecture, a long list of events and first-class amenities – such as valet service and luxury car washes – round out the experience. It’s no surprise NorthPark was named as one of the “7 Retail Wonders of the Modern World” by Shopping Centers Today.

Belk Arrives at Galleria Dallas

Galleria Dallas’ new anchor store Belk is set to open in spring 2014, bringing three levels of modern, Southern style to the world-class shopping destination. The family-owned and operated department store has 301 stores in 16 Southern states, and stocks higher-end brands such as Ugg, Michael Kors, Polo Ralph Lauren, Lilly Pulitzer, Free People and Eileen Fisher.

USA Today calls Galleria Dallas “One of the top 10 places to spend it all.” The international collection of shops is the only North Texas home of Thomas Pink, TOUS, BCBGeneration, Tourneau, Brahmin, Sony, ZARA, Karen Millen, Club Monaco and American Girl and offers exclusive dining options and a year-round ice skating rink.

West Village Transforms Historic Dallas into Boutique Heaven

Known as Uptown’s Downtown, West Village is one of Dallas’ top landmark destinations. Dallas natives put down roots in this original beloved neighborhood, and today the walkable West Village shopping and dining district boasts an impressive mix of nationally known retail shops and boutiques along with 19 restaurants serving up local, chef-driven dishes.

The revitalized West Village is the perfect place for a new culinary adventure, al fresco coffee with a friend, taking in a movie at the Magnolia Theatre or browsing the latest fashions.

McKinney Avenue

Trolley Extension

The McKinney Avenue Trolley will complete the extension of the trolley line from McKinney Avenue southeast on Olive Street to connect with DART light rail between the Pearl Street and St. Paul Stations. In late 2013, construction will begin on an Arts District loop which will connect the existing St. Paul line with the new Olive Street extension (to be completed in 2014) and will provide service to Klyde Warren Park.

Dallas Love

Field Evolution

Dallas’ beloved Love Field airport is the recipient of a much needed – and even more welcome – $1 billion major renovation, which recently rounded the corner on two of its four years of scheduled construction to consolidate the airport’s original three concourses into a central hub for all of its airlines. Most notably, recent years

have seen some of the Love Field Modernization Program’s (LFMP) most significant milestones – the January 2012 opening of the new security checkpoint along with the first half of the new lobby, and the new

Ticketing /Check-In, which opened November 2012.

Together, these major milestones now allow Love Field to service travelers with more efficiency and elegance than ever before (thanks to the LFMP’s Art Program, through which art from renowned local artists has already begun adorning the halls of completed portions of the airport). And in April 2013, the airport officially opened 12 of its 20 new gates. The project is slated for completion in 2014.

Katy Trail Expansion

The popular hike and bike path Katy Trail will be extended 4.3 miles from its current north terminus at McKinney Avenue/McCommas Boulevard to the

DART White Rock Station through three phases, with an estimated completion in mid-2014.

Once completed, the 7.8 miles of the Katy Trail will link the American Airlines Center, West Village, Knox-Henderson, Mockingbird Station and White Rock Lake offering users a true urban trail experience.

Dallas Midtown

Beck Ventures is giving back to the community by leading the redevelopment of North Dallas with the transformation of Valley View Center into Dallas Midtown. Upon completion in 2015, Dallas Midtown will be an urban oasis with mixed-use retail, internation-al recognized hotels, high-rise office buildings, and family and luxury residential towers and will feature a mix of locally owned

retailers and nationally recognized brands including AMC Theatres, Sears, JC Penney and more!
