Max began his tenure as the DMA’s Eugene McDermott Director on

January 9, 2012. Following such distinguished predecessors as Jack

Lane and Bonnie Pitman, and most recently Olivier Meslay, who

served as the Museum’s interim director and to whom we offer our

heartfelt thanks for engineering a seamless transition, we embarked on

recruiting a senior management team to launch us on a new stage in

our trajectory.

The Museum is fortunate to have Rob Stein as its Deputy Director;

Rob, who joined us in April 2012, oversees the Museum’s financial,

educational, conservation, technological, web, and operational

activities. He immediately began working with us on a revision of

the portfolios and responsibilities of the DMA’s leadership team,

which resulted in the creation of three new positions to enhance and

streamline the institution’s organizational structure: Associate Director

of Curatorial Affairs, a position filled by Olivier Meslay; Associate

Director of Collections and Exhibitions, filled by Tamara Wootton-

Bonner; and Associate Director of External Affairs, a completely new

position recently filled by Anne Bergeron in November 2012.

A number of other personnel changes have taken place at

the Museum:

• Gail Davitt, Chair of Learning Initiatives and The Dallas

Museum of Art League Director of Education, retired

this past summer after twenty-six years of service to

the Museum. Gail has provided vision and leadership

for the Education division and helped to launch major

institutional initiatives. Nicole Stutzman Forbes,

formerly the Museum’s Director of Teaching Programs

and Partnerships, succeeded Gail upon her retirement

on June 1, 2012.

• Carol Robbins, The Ellen and Harry S. Parker III Curator

of the Arts of the Americas and the Pacific, retired after

forty-seven years of service to the Dallas Museum of

Art. A search has begun for outstanding candidates to

curate the exceptionally renowned collections of art

from the Americas and from the Pacific Rim.

• Gabriel Ritter was appointed The Nancy and

Tim Hanley Assistant Curator of Contemporary Art

in May 2012. He will work on a number of projects,

including the retooling of the Concentrations series,

focused on emerging artists.

Finally, it gives us great pleasure to report that we were

able to coax internationally recognized conservator and

art specialist Mark Leonard to become the DMA’s first

Chief Conservator as of July 1, 2012. Mark’s appointment

inaugurated the initial phase of the development of our

new conservation program, which will include the addition

of staff and the renovation of onsite spaces. With the

growth of our collection over the last several decades, we

are taking steps to increase our in-house conservation

The past year has been huge—even by

Texas standards—for the Dallas Museum

of Art. We are pleased to share here a brief

précis, sketching just a few of our many

achievements and realignments made in the

midst of a very exciting year.

capabilities, both to safeguard the quality of the works in our

collection and to benefit from the research in materials and

innovative techniques that conservation technology allows.

In tandem with the many changes to personnel and infrastructure

made this year, the Museum maintained its exceptional level of

activity in its core program areas. Highlights of the year include:

• The release in February 2012 of the DMA’s new collection

handbook documenting the Museum’s transformative

growth since its founding in 1903. This 368-page catalogue

provides an overview of the quality, breadth, and depth of our

encyclopedic collection. In conjunction with the release of

the new handbook, the DMA organized a special exhibition

pairing approximately sixty works that have been gifted to the

Museum by longstanding donors. Face to Face: International Art at

the DMA highlighted linkages between artworks from different

disciplines, regions, and time periods. Seminal works featured

in the exhibition were profiled in greater depth through

nearly fifty new additions to the Museum’s smARTphone tour,

available at DMA.mobi.

• A number of important acquisitions of art,

including a panoramic landscape of the Hudson

River, View from Garrison, West Point, New York, painted

in 1870 by David Johnson, a leading member of the

Hudson River school painters (p. 17); an imposing

ancestor sculpture of Owedjebo, a founding hero of

the Urhobo people of Nigeria, fashioned of wood

with traces of white chalk and standing almost

seven feet high (p. 19); and a silver, enamel, and opal

box designed by Archibald Knox (p. 25). The Museum

also acquired six works by Japanese artists Takesada

Matsutani, Sadamasa Motonaga, Shozo Shimamoto,

and Tsuruko Yamazaki. Produced between 1950 and

1963, these new acquisitions

greatly expand the DMA’s collection of contemporary

Japanese art. Eighty-five works of art entered the

collection this year; for a full list see page 34.

• The fabulous exhibition The Fashion World of Jean Paul

Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk, which featured

approximately 140 ensembles spanning over thirty-five

years from the designer’s couture and ready-to-wear

collections, along with numerous archival documents.

The DMA was the first of two U.S. venues to host

this critically acclaimed international exhibition, and

it marked the first time that the Museum has ever

presented an exhibition dedicated to the art of fashion.

The exhibition was a monumental success in terms of

both attendance and publicity, thanks in no small part

to the Host Committee.

• Sophisticated programming, which drew audiences

to the Museum in droves throughout the year. The 21st

season of Arts & Letters Live featured readings by

Judy Blume, John Irving, Jeffrey Eugenides, Daniel Silva,

and others. Programs such

as Urban Armor: Body

Building with Artist Jill

Downen attracted new

audiences to the DMA by

inviting teenagers and

their families to explore

the body’s relationship to

architecture and how we

encounter space.

• The exhibition Flower of the

Prairie: George Grosz in Dallas,

which featured twenty

works commissioned from

the renowned German

Page 5: Dallas Museum of Art: The Year in Review, 2011-2012

5

artist, as well as a rich selection of historic photographs of Dallas

documenting the city as Grosz discovered it in 1952. The exhibition was

accompanied by the DMA’s first e-catalogue, an electronic publication

available as an iPad app. Over 1,000 people have downloaded the free

app from all over the world, including countries as far-ranging as China

and Brazil.

We are also delighted to report that the Museum received several crucial

grants during the past fiscal year:

• The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation awarded the DMA a

$500,000 grant in support of Chief Conservator Mark Leonard.

• The Dallas Museum of Art received $300,000 to support

the creation of a Laboratory for Museum Innovation. The

three lead gifts to this new initiative are from AT&T, Texas

Instruments Foundation, and Cynthia and Forrest Miller.

• The Museum received a $250,000 gift from Martha McCarty

Kimmerling to support ongoing research into visitor

engagement in the Museum. This new research will extend

the information presented in the DMA’s groundbreaking and

nationally acclaimed seven-year study released in 2010, A

Framework for Engaging with Art.

The same spirit of innovation that these grants recognize at

the DMA informs our planning at every level. We are embarking

on an increased use

of social media such

as Facebook and

Twitter, and are now

systematically tracking

what users of these

media are saying

about us. To promote

transparency, the

Page 6: Dallas Museum of Art: The Year in Review, 2011-2012

6

Museum launched an online dashboard of real-time statistics, which will continue

to grow and feature new data points. The DMA’s website is being streamlined and

simplified, and a new logo, brand, and web URL are all debuting in 2013. In the

coming year, these changes will continue to manifest in new and exciting ways

throughout the Museum facility and online.

The inauguration of Klyde Warren Park in late October 2012 literally opened us up

to new levels of visitor access by eliminating barriers and exponentially increasing

foot traffic throughout the Arts District. By

the same token, the Perot Museum of Nature

and Science (which opened in December 2012)

rounds out the Arts District and offers exciting

new opportunities in visitor engagement and

institutional partnership. The future holds even

more exciting opportunities and challenges. We

are reconfiguring our Membership and Visitor

Services departments following the recently

implemented Friends & Partners program, which

offers free admission and a chance to earn “points”

(which can be redeemed for a variety of products

and services) simply by visiting the Museum.

As we reflect on our past year, we are also busily

making plans for the many years to follow. DMA

staff and trustees are set to debut the Museum’s

strategic plan in 2013, including a new mission statement. In developing the plan,

we have come to realize that we must become more collaborative—both within

our institution and with other museums and organizations, locally and globally—if

we are to reflect the full diversity of our community. Clearly, collaboration and

innovation are crucial for us to evolve from an insular culture with a regional

focus to an outward- and forward-looking culture that engages us in a wider

international conversation that is true to artists’ intentions and reveals them to the

community at large. We look forward to working with you, our greatest supporters,

to share the vision and ambition of the Museum to become an incubator of new

ideas, a home to great art and experiences, and the definitive cultural destination

for North Texas residents and tourists alike.
