Imagine music and art coming from all directions as if it were a creative tidal wave knocking you off your feet. With the family-like quality that is often found in the artistic community, the streets of Deep Ellum welcome you in for three days of performances and showcases alike, and you don’t have to pay a dime!

The Deep Ellum district of Dallas hosted their annual arts festival at the begin-ning of April. The festival hosts performances from over 75 bands, local and international, performing on three different stages all weekend. What makes this festival so unique is the block party atmosphere that provides a showcase of artistic talent from people all over the country. And if you’re a serious musician trying to put yourself “out there,” then this is the place you’ll want to be seen.

Two Dallas MusicWire members were featured as musical performers during the festival: Chris Bonner, vocalist and guitarist of the local band the BAcksliders and performer Ken Turetzky. Both are active in the Dallas music community, as well as being premiere representatives of Dallas MusicWire.

Chris Bonner said that the festival went really well, except for it being windy, which is not unusual for the known fickleness of Dallas weather. But fortunately this did not become a problem on stage.

“It’s a free festival; people can be exposed to a lot of difference things” Bonner said.

For not being paid for performing the entertainment put on good shows for a pretty solid amount of festival attendees. Bonner suggests, though, that there be more advertisement so that there will be an even bigger crowd next year.

“I wish it weren’t free, so we can get paid,” Bonner jokingly admits when asked, as a performing artists, what changes he would want for next year’s event.

Exposure being a top priority of rising musicians, getting on the Deep Ellum roster for the future would be a good goal for local musicians. That’s why Dallas MusicWire provides the social network and communication connection for artists seeking promotion.

Other arts festivals for DMW members to consider are the Taste of Dallas and North by 35 in Denton. Remember, “Think Big, Act Small,” and that’s what the Deep Ellum Arts Festival is all about.

A seperate listening room with a great sound system. Original material is the norm, but a cover now and then is fine. So what does this mean for musicians? Start beefing up on the ins and outs of Facebook fan pages. Yes, Myspace profiles are much better for musicians and bands but what Facebook lacks on that end it makes of for in other areas that Myspace will never be able to compete with. The primary benefit is, relationship building. The idea that you can publish pics, videos and status updates that will appear in your friends news feeds is huge. Think of this as an opportunity to Spice up your friends news feeds. Minimal self promotion is crucial. But if you are able to provide content that can generate conversation your fan base will grow organically, and you will be interacting on a personal level with your fan base outside of the concert scene.

He was a good friend, we shared a love for music and life. He also was a good Christian man so I know he’s in good hands now . But, I will still miss him and always will. His songs were his legecy.
