Li Cunxin’s iconic autobiography Mao’s LastDancer was first published as a children’s picture book, The Peasant Prince. Monkey Baa is honoured to be adapting this story onto the stage.

Li, a 10-year old peasant boy, is plucked from his village in rural China and sent to a ballet academy in the big city. He leaves everything and everyone he knows, including his beloved parents. Over years of gruelling training and determination, this boy transforms from an impoverished peasant to a giant of the international dance scene. Li’s courage, resilience and unwavering hope for a better life makes The Peasant Prince a story to ignite our own aspirations to be the best person we can be.

Recommended age group: Years 1-6 | Stages 1,2,3 | Ages 6-12 years oldIllustrations by Anne Spudvilas

Thanks to Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal Pty Ltd, sponsors of the YoungPeople’s Entertainment Season, we have amused thousands of young people and their adults over the years. One of our most popular programs, the Young People’s Entertainment Season is designed to entertain, stimulate and also make education fun!

In 2016, we have a fantastic line up of Aussie entertainment for youngpeople. We’re delighted to bring in the next instalment from Andy Griffiths + Terry Denton, The 52-Storey Treehouse. And our young people will love seeing Snugglepot + Cuddlpie Live on Stage. Our season prides itself on being based on popular children’s literature. All performances come with teacher’s notes to aid the school syllabus, helping make that vital connection for kids between what they read at home, and at school, and seeing some uniquely Australian tales brought to life on stage.

We hope you enjoy what’s on offer and that we’ll see you at the MECC!
