1. INTRODUCTION

This updated environmental Declaration contains information that has been updated with respect

to the previous Verified Environmental Declaration DAM007 A, regarding environmental

performance and compliance with regulatory requirements for the year 2015.

In order to facilitate document legibility, the layout of this document is the same as that of the

previous Verified Environmental Declaration (same chapters and sub-sections), referring to the

previous version where there are no updates for the information in the corresponding sections or

providing new content where there have been changes and/or updates are available.

This document contains updates regarding EMAS 1211/2009 Regulations. In this respect, please note

that, given the type of business activity and, therefore, the variety and diversity of products

manufactured by the Company (machinery and lines of machines), we have measured the annual

ratio between production indicators and production data only where there is a direct correlation

(for example, natural gas consumption may be attributed to heating of work premises and

therefore is not indexed with respect to production), illustrated in the sections relating to the

corresponding environmental aspects.

As regards other information relating to the introduction, please refer to the contents of the

Verified Environmental Declaration, confirming the following corporate business codes: NACE 28.49

and 33.12.

4.2.1 CONSUMPTION OF RESOURCES

The Resources used for the production Process carried out at ATOP facilities are the following:

- Steel and Various Metals (base and main components)

- Aluminium Profiles

- Electrical Wires

- Energy (Electrical and Natural Gas)

- Packaging.

As regards the characteristics of use, please consult the sections that follow.

4.2.1.1 Steel and Various Metals

Steel and metals in general are used to manufacture metal parts that make up the majority of the machines and lines manufactured by ATOP for its Customers. The ongoing search for high-performance, high-resistance materials has resulted in the materials constantly evolving. As a result, it is not possible to identify homogenous and univocal materials and consequently measure quantities correlated to the environmental performance of company Processes. This consideration is corroborated by the choice made by Customers regarding machine size and weight, data that are an integral part of the specifications for machine design and that have diminished progressively in light of specific environmental objectives and programmes.

The search for technological solutions that optimise space and weight constitutes a significant part of ATOP’s design know-how, and is therefore constantly present among our objectives, both met and striven for, correlated to specific types of machines.

The implementation of the “Mechanical Constructions” (COSM) department, in the last quarter of 2010, entailed the direct manufacture of a series of components. Full department operation, achieved in 2012, resulted in the management of consumption data for raw materials (steel and other metals) used by this department.

In 2013, the plant machine units were increased with the addition of a work centre, a turning lathe and a milling machine. In 2015, machine units were further increased with the addition of a grinding unit and a turning lathe.

During 2015, 14,500 Kg of steel were used, an increase compared to the 11,500 Kg registered in 2014, due to the greater number of machines used to manufacture the mechanical components constructed by COSM.

4.2.1.2 Aluminium Profiles

Aluminium profiles are used to construct the support structures and the frames of the handling systems created by ATOP and used by its Customers. These materials are therefore a feature of some of the types of machines constructed by ATOP.

Consumption of these materials is measured by the Customer with respect to the handling system of the product being processed and it entails that the Customer identify the lengths and the technical characteristics.

Consumption of these materials is represented by the Kg of aluminium in relation to the number of machines manufactured and has increased with respect to previous years both in terms of absolute value and in terms of use, confirming the increased number of manufactured machines and lines that required transfer systems for processed products (usually called conveyors).

4.2.1.3 Electrical cables

Electrical cables are used to wire the machines and are therefore used during the assembly stage to

provide power to all machine drives and components. The cables used are subdivided into 2 main

types: unipolar and multipolar. Use of electrical cables (unipolar and multipolar) depends on the

type of machinery being manufactured and on Customer specifications, although specific design

decisions strive to optimise cable use.

The graph below shows the increase in the quantity of cables used over the last three years, which

is in line with the increase of production activities registered over the same period and with the

types of cables and machinery produced.

4.2.1.4 Energy

The energy resources consumed in the plant are natural gas and electric energy, which are used

respectively for: heating work spaces and powering office machines and machinery used for

production processes.

The amount of natural gas consumed for heating work spaces registered an increase with respect to

the previous year (approximately +39.5% as compared to 2014), due to climate conditions and

increased use of office spaces.

Given the type of activity carried out in ATOP facilities, electrical energy consumption is only

partly correlated to the Production Process (production of mechanical components, assembly and

functional testing of machinery that is therefore directly related to the number of machines

manufactures), while other energy resources (and in part electrical energy as well) are correlated

to service systems in support of business activities (lighting, electrical grid for office machines,

heating and air conditioning system, etc.).

Electrical energy consumption increased (approximately +6.2% as compared to 2014), due to the

increase in the number of machines manufactured, the increase in the number of mechanical parts

made by the COSM department and the installation of new, more powerful service systems in the

plant.

In order to reduce the economic impact of electrical energy costs, ATOP adheres to the electric

energy purchasing group, CTE.

In compliance with requirements set forth by law, the Company implements the SISTRI waste management system to manage special hazardous waste, in addition to filling out the required forms and keeping the Waste Loading/Unloading Register in paper format.

As regards the production, sorting and disposal of the waste produced, the following was noted:

• Filings and turnings from ferrous materials increased while those from non-ferrous materials decreased slightly, likely due to the different type of materials machined in the COSM department.

• Oil-based emulsifiers not containing halogens increased (waste product classified as hazardous following the characterisation carried out in 2014), due to the greater productivity of the COSM department and the waste collection and disposal system;

• A significant increase in aluminium waste products, due to the increase in the number of machines that require aluminium profiles;

• Presence of copper scraps due to failure to return discarded products and materials not used for testing Customer products to the Customer;

• Waste electrical cables increased as compared to the previous year, due to the sorting and disposal system used in 2015;

• A considerable reduction of the amount of empty varnish cans, coherent with the actual use of these products;

Page 15: DAM008 A - atopwinding.com · UNI EN ISO 14001 . EC 1221/09 Regulations . Attachments: Revisions Table . Revision . Date : Approval . Description : ... During 2015, 14,500 Kg of steel

• Reduction of toner waste due to the completion of environmental programmes

regarding de-materialisation;

• A significant reduction of the amount of waste wiping cloths/absorbent materials contaminated by hazardous substances, due to the productivity of the COSM department and the waste collection and disposal system;

• A significant increase of plastic waste due to discarded components during machine assembly.

Remaining waste is to be considered in line with production volumes for the year 2015, although for some of the waste materials in question, relating the above-mentioned amounts to the annual machine production is not very significant. This consideration is based on the low decisional leverage that ATOP has in terms of managing the characteristics and use of the products in question (as they are, in fact, a result of Customer specifications).

In compliance with the provisions of the Decree issued on 17 December 2009 and subsequent amendments and additions, ATOP registered with the waste tracking system (called SISTRI) and implemented the provisions set forth by the subsequent legislation updates.

4.2.2.2 Atmospheric Emissions

The types of activities carried out by the Company classify it as a minor source of air emissions, with the exception of occasional emissions deriving from the COSM department. Activation of the COSM department required submitting a special request for authorisation for atmospheric emissions, as per sub-section 2, article 269 of Legislative Decree 152/06 and subsequent amendments and additions, in order to improve the overall efficacy of operations. The Authorisation for Atmospheric Emissions was granted (executive measure of the Province of Florence n. 2138 dated 3/06/2011, in accordance with the provisions of the environmental programme).

After having obtained the aforementioned authorisation, the plant was made fully operational following the relative communication to the Province of Florence. In accordance with the provisions of the authorisation, during the period of controlled operation, emissions were sampled and sent to the Province of Florence and the ARPAT (Region of Tuscany environmental protection agency). The test results on the samples were delivered on 29/09/2011 with a notification regarding a NON SUBSTANTIAL change to the plant, transposed by “silent assent” on the part of the Province of Florence.

The Registers for Analyses and Intervention on Emission Reduction Systems signed by Management (system manager) and authenticated by the Province of Florence have been implemented and kept updated. The analysis results for emissions measured in 2015 were also recorded in the Registers.

The table below details the aforementioned samples taken in 2013, 2014 and 2015 and the authorised limits and relative pollutants, called TOTAL DUST:

The total amount of dust emissions over a one year period was estimated considering the use of the system equal to the maximum number of authorised hours at the maximum authorised rate, based on the pollutant concentration measured. This value was equal to approximately 0.73 Kg/year in 2015, as compared to 0.63 Kg/year estimated in 2014 and 0.70 Kg/year estimated in 2013.

As regards management of the thermal power stations, please consult the Verified Environmental Declaration.

4.2.2.3 Acoustic Emissions As regards the need to periodically measure emissions from sound sources and emissions from ATOP, simultaneously assessing compliance with the differential daytime criterion and based on the classification of the areas, on 21/01/2014 a new daytime noise emission measurement campaign was carried out by a qualified acoustic engineer, which confirmed compliance with the limits set forth. The map below shows the measurement points for the data reported in the table, correlating them, where necessary, to the neighbouring receptors (A and B). The Municipal Acoustic Zoning Plan may be consulted on the Municipal website (http://www.barberinovaldelsa.net).

Sound emission measurements also took into consideration the emissions from the Mechanical Construction Department.

The type of activities carried out by the Company were analysed in terms of worker noise exposure risk and a specific report was drawn up in 2007 and integrated on 12/02/2014 with respect to the start of COSM Department activities.

The results of these analyses show that the average daily exposure level is inferior to 80 dBA and peak noise levels are inferior to 135 dB(C) ppeak, for all workers, with the exception of the COSM department. For the latter department, the average daily exposure level is inferior to 85 dBA and peak noise levels are inferior to 137 dB(C) ppeak, consequently requiring medical surveillance.

Work activities are carried out exclusively during daytime hours and Company systems are not operative (in any way) during night-time hours.

The Municipality of Barberino V. d’Elsa has implemented the acoustic classification of the territory in compliance with the provisions of Regional Law n. 67 dated 29/11/2004, based on which Company areas are classified in Class IV and Class V, with application of the differential criterion, and are therefore subject to the respective limits.
