Dragi colegi,Iată-ne la final de an şi totodată, la ediţia cu numărul 32 a revistei noastre, NOUTĂŢI.Sfârşitul anului ne găseşte, ca de fiecare dată, adânciţi temeinic în muncă şi mândri de a vedea plecând, rând pe rând, roadele de aur ale mâinilor noastre, iahtul SeaXplorer La Datcha, primele două feriboturi BC Ferries şi nava de suport logistic Bibby Wave Master „Horizon”. Ȋnsă, într-o lume aflată într-o continuă schimbare, şantierul nostru se confruntă cu condiţii de piaţă mai dificile. La fel ca şi celelalte companii din industria construcţiilor navale, şi noi va trebui să ne concentrăm pe costuri şi pe reducerea acestora, va trebui să ieşim din confortul răspunsurilor garantate şi să aflăm noi soluţii şi modalităţi de a asigura prosperitatea viitoare a companiei. Paginile acestei reviste reflectă, ca şi până acum, activitatea vibrantă a navaliştilor gălăţeni, feluritele moduri în care aceştia duc mai departe tradiţia îndelungată a făuritorilor de nave de la malul Dunării dar şi felul în care şantierul înrâureşte viaţa comunităţii locale.Vă dorim lectură plăcută!

Foreword Dear colleagues,Here we are at the end of the year and, at the same time, we have reached the 32nd edition of our local newsletter NOUTATI.The end of the year finds us, as usual, immersed in work and proud to see the fruits of our labours departing our yard one after another.These include the SeaXplorer "La Datcha", the first two 8117 ferries and the Bibby WaveMaster ASV 9020 Horizon.However, in a world that is constantly changing, our yard continues to face difficult market conditions. Like the rest of the shipbuilding industry, we need to focus on reducing our costs and moving away from the comfort of historical working practises and instead develop new solutions and ways to ensure the company's future prosperity.The pages of this newsletter, as always, proudly present the energy and activity of our yard employees and the techniques that they use to carry on the long tradition of shipbuilding here on the banks of the Danube. We also take great pleasure in showing the many ways in which the yard contributes to the life of the local community.We wish you pleasant reading!

A fost o onoare pentru mine să mă aflu la conducerea Şantierului Naval Damen Galaţi ȋn ultimii doi ani şi să lucrăm ȋmpreună, contribuind astfel la bogata tradiţie a istoriei construcţiilor navale din oraşul Galaţi.

Şantierul gălăţean, ‘perla’ din România a Grupului Damen, a fost ȋntotdeauna un loc special pentru mine ȋncă de la prima mea vizită aici, ȋn urmă cu aproape 15 ani, pe când eram implicat ȋntr-unul din cele mai spectaculoase proiecte din acea vreme. Ȋntoarcerea mea la Galaţi, mai ales după perioada petrecută ȋn Qatar, a fost ca o “gură de aer proaspăt”, atât la propriu cât şi la figurat. Şantierul din Qatar, deşi unul dintre cele mai moderne şantiere din lume, era ȋn acelaşi timp unul foarte nou, cu o echipă tânără provenind din 28 de ţări

diferite, ai cărei membri ȋnvăţau cum să construiască nave ȋmpreună. La polul opus, navaliştii români construiau nave cu mare uşurinţă sau, cum spunem noi ȋn olandeză “met twee fingers in de neus” (ȋn traducere aproximativă “fluierând”).

Cu toate acestea, am avut şi aici provocările noastre şi asta deoarece nu e uşor deloc să derulezi un portofoliu de comenzi atât de vast ca cel din Galaţi, de la nave offshore foarte complexe până la cea mai mare navă de cercetare din lume – spărgătorul de gheaţă – dar şi nave militare / de patrulare sau uimitoare mega-iahturi.

avut ȋn multe dintre şantierele Grupului Damen. Importanţa siguranţei ȋn desfăşurarea activităţii, un aspect esenţial ȋn Olanda, grija faţă de angajaţi, disponibilitatea de a-i asculta când au ceva de spus, şi nu ȋn ultimul rând, implicarea activă ȋn comunita-tea locală, mă bucură mult că toate acestea se dezvoltă constant ȋn ultimul timp ȋn şantier.

Ȋn ceea ce priveşte viitorul, noua mea funcţie mă va duce la sediul central al Grupului Damen din Olanda, unde mă aşteaptă o altă provocare. Succesorul meu, Flemming Sørensen, este un nume familiar pentru voi toţi. După revenirea la Galaţi ȋn luna iunie, activitatea sa s-a concentrat pe recent implementatul “Program de Restructurare”, program la care participă mulţi dintre colegii noştri din şantier. Sunt ȋncrezător că şantierul rămâne pe mâini bune şi pricepute, continuând să meargă pe drumul către o eficienţă mai bună.

Vă mulţumesc pentru timpul petrecut ȋmpreună şi pentru experienţa dobândită din colaborarea cu voi! Mulţumesc şi multă sănătate!

Dragi navalişti gălăţeni!

Trăim, într-adevăr vremuri schimbătoare. Pe scena mondială, structurile internaţionale și modalitățile de comunicare și cooperare cu care ne-am obișnuit și pe care le consideram de la sine ȋnţelese de zeci de ani sunt supuse unor presiuni, în unele cazuri, până la punctul limită. Piețele tulburi, în combi-nație cu un control intern slăbit și asumarea excesivă de riscuri, au determinat o situație foarte dificilă în cadrul grupului Damen și, ca atare, unele schimbări urmează a fi implementate pentru a depăşi aceste inconveniente.

Structura Unităţilor Operaţionale deja anunţată de ceva vreme constituie modalitatea aleasă pentru a ieşi dintr-o situaţie financiară foarte dificilă, însă ce înseamnă asta pentru SNDG? Lăsând deoparte schimbările la nivel înalt, la o vedere simplistă, nimic dramatic. Capacitatea de încărcare pentru anul viitor este în continuă scădere (de la aproximativ 3.5 milioane ore la 3.0 milioane ore), scădere pe care o vom resimţi ȋntr-o bună măsură. Chiar şi 3.0 milioa-ne ore vor fi greu de realizat, va trebui să muncim mult însă vom face tot posibilul pentru a atenua efectul acestei încetiniri. Una dintre modalităţile avute ȋn vedere constă ȋn acordarea de asistenţă colegilor noştri de la Mangalia sau relocarea unora dintre angajaţii noştri în alte şantiere din Damen sau poate chiar în afara grupului, pe perioade mai scurte sau mai lungi de timp. Nu este ȋnsă cazul să fim prea dramatici.

Totuşi, dacă privim mai atent, este clar că situaţia este sumbră. Avem un şantier bun care – din varii

motive, interne dar şi multe externe – şi-a pierdut cumva direcţia şi robusteţea. Nu mai “livrăm întot-deauna ceea ce promitem”, avem deseori întârzieri, ne confruntăm cu un nivel extrem de schimbări, ne-am primejduit parţial relaţiile cu subcontractorii, ne-am mai pierdut din motivaţie, avem pierderi financiare - da, lista este mai lungă decât ne-ar plăcea. Există, desigur şi lucruri pozitive: din fericire, nivelul de calitate a rămas, mai mult sau mai puţin, acelaşi, avem clienţi finali mulţumiţi care cred în continuare în noi.

Aceasta înseamnă că există un fundament pe care putem începe să reconstruim. Ȋn cursul acestui proces, va trebui să ne schimbăm modul de lucru din ultimii ani. Fie că este sau nu adevărat că aceeaşi istorie se repetă rar, soluţia parţială este să “ne întoarcem la rădăcini”, prin asta însemnând:< Ȋmbunătăţirea engineering-ului;< Implementarea unui Planning Unic;< Respectarea termenelor şi evitarea "rostogolirii bulgărelui de zăpada" cât mai devreme posibil;< Utilizarea de Inspecţii “First time right”;< Realizarea operaţiunilor de saturare în ateliere, cât mai mult posibil; < Realizarea operaţiunilor de vopsire în halele de vopsitorie, cât mai mult posibil;< Şi nu în ultimul rând: recâştigarea încrederii subcontractorilor.

Sper ca cele de mai sus să tragă un semnal de alarmă în organizaţia noastră, întrucât acestea fac parte din strategia anilor următori, în scopul nu doar de a redeveni profitabili ci şi pentru a ne recâştiga şi păstra înalta motivaţie şi eficienţă.

O altă secţiune include elementele recent aprobatu-lui Plan de Ȋmbunătăţire:< Ȋmbunătăţiri ale amenajării atelierelor;< Reducerea complexităţii inutile;< Investiţii în tehnologii noi, cum ar fi roboţii industriali – atunci când situaţia financiară se va redresa;< Crearea unui şantier mai sustenabil – atât din punct de vedere operaţional cât şi ecologic;< Şi nu în ultimul rând: sporirea eforturilor de a instrui şi familiariza cu şantierul următoarele generaţii de navalişti.

Mai sunt multe alte aspecte, însă în opinia mea acestea ar fi liniile principale de urmat în anul ce vine, atât în şantier cât şi în cadrul diviziei OTC, din care facem acum parte.

Sunt nerăbdător să reiau colaborarea cu voi toţi pentru a readuce şi conduce şantierul către perfor-manţă şi excelenţă în anii viitori şi închei, repetând ceea ce preşedintele Consiliului nostru de Adminis-traţie, Jason Bronscheer, spunea atât de “la obiect” în numărul anterior al acestei reviste: să fim la cârma propriului nostru destin!

It has been an honour to be at the helm of Damen Shipyards Galati for the last two years, working side by side with you and building on the rich shipbuilding history of the city of Galati.

The shipyard in Galati, Damen Group’s ‘pearl’ in Romania, has been a special place for me since my first visit here, about 15 years ago, when I was involved in one of the most spectacular projects at that time. Coming back to Galati, especially after my posting in Qatar, was a breath of fresh air, literally and figuratively speaking. Our shipyard in Qatar, while being the world’s most modern facility of its type, was also a brand-new project. It had a very young team, with team members coming from 28 different countries, and it was just beginning to learn how to build ships. At the opposite end of that spectrum Romanian shipbuilders have for centuries been building ships effortlessly, or as we say in Dutch, “met twee fingers in de neus”.

Nevertheless, we have had our challenges as well. Building such a varied portfolio as we do in Galati, ranging from complex offshore vessels and the world’s largest research vessel with icebreaking capabilities, to grey offshore patrol vessels and sparkling white mega-yachts, is not an easy task.

Looking back over the last two years, I hope I have succeeded in constructively contributing my own experience and the lessons I have learnt in the different positions that I have in various shipyards in the Damen Group. These include the importance of safety in everything we do, something we are brought up with in the Netherlands, take good care of your employees and always have time to listen to what they have to say and, last but not least, be actively involved in the local community, something that I was pleased to see growing more and more lately in Galati.

Regarding the future, my next position takes me to the Damen Shipyards headquarters in the Netherlands, where I have accepted a new challenge. My successor, Flemming Sørensen, is a familiar name to all of you. Since his return to Galati last June he has been working on the recently introduced restructuring programme, in which many colleagues from the yard have participated. I am confident that the yard is in good and capable

hands, and already on the path towards a more efficient and sustainable future.

Shipbuilders of Galati!

These are indeed changing times in which we are living! On the world scene international structures and the ways of communication and cooperation that we have got accustomed to and taken for granted for decades are under a lot of stress - sometimes to near breaking point. The nervous markets in combination with slack internal controls and excessive risk taking has resulted in a very difficult situation at the Damen Group and changes are being introduced to address the difficulties.

The business unit structure described by Rino is the chosen way out of a very challenging financial situation, but what does it mean for DSGa? Apart from the changes at top level, from a superficial view nothing too dramatic. The workload next year is going down (from around 3.5 million hours to 3.0 million hours) and will be felt to some extent. Even with 3.0 million hours we will have to work hard to accomplish our goals and we will also do all that we can to soften the effects of the slowdown through actions such as assisting our colleagues in Mangalia and continuing to rent out people to other parts of Damen or maybe even outside Damen for varying periods of time. Still, this is not too dramatic.

However, if we look a little deeper it is clear that the situation is grim. We have a good shipyard that has, for many reasons internal and very much external, somewhat lost its direction and robustness. We do not always deliver what we promise, we are often late, we face an extreme high level of changes, we have partly jeopardized relations with our co-makers, we have lost some of our motivation, we lose

money….yes, the list is longer that we would like. However, there are a couple of positives that we can add to the other side of the scales. The standard of quality has more or less been maintained, and we have mostly satisfied end-clients and owners that believe in us.

This means that there is a foundation on which we can start to re-build. As part of that process we will be forced to change the attitudes that have developed over recent years. Whether it is true or not that history hardly ever repeats itself, part of the solution is to get back to our roots. This will include introducing:< Improved engineering;< A One Yard Plan;< Meeting the schedules and stopping the snow-ball when you see it;< Getting it right first time, every time;< Outfitting in the workshops; < Painting in the paint-shops;< And, not least, re-gaining the trust of our co-makers.

I hope these ring some bells in our organization, because this will be an important part of the focus in the coming years, not only so as to become profitable again, but also to get back our strong motivation and high efficiency without wearing ourselves out.

The other part of the strategy contains the elements of the recently approved Yard Improvement Plan. This will set out to achieve:< Better shop lay-outs;< Reducing unnecessary complexity;< Investment in new technology e.g. robots - when the financial situation improves;< A more sustainable yard; operation-wise as well as environmentally;< And last but not least: make an effort to ensure that the next generation of shipbuilders get a proper training and introduction to the yard.

There are many more details, but in my view these are the headlines for the coming year at the yard as well as in the business unit OTC, where we will now be represented.

I look forward to work with all of you in bringing the yard back on track for strong performance and excellence in the coming years and will wrap it up by repeating what our chairman, Jason Bronscheer, said so spot-on in the last issue: let us aim to control our own destiny!

Comanda 312476, iahtul Amels Custom de 77m, a oferit încă o premieră pentru Șantierul Naval Damen Galați. Aceasta a constat în construcția suprastructurii din aluminiu dintr-un singur bloc, dar mai ales ridicarea acesteia pe navă în vederea montajului final.

Operaţiunea este cu atât mai impresionantă dacă luăm în calcul dimensiunile suprastructurii:< Lungime 44,8 m< Lățime 12,5 m< Înălțime 10,1 < Greutate 108 tone

Manevra a avut loc în Hala Nouă, ridicarea realizându-se cu ajutorul ambelor poduri rulante, sincronizate. Un detaliu care ilustrează excelent măiestria dar şi precizia navaliştilor gălăţeni îl constituie ridicarea părţii superioare a liftului în interiorul suprastructurii, înainte ca aceasta să fie urcată la navă.

Ulterior, suprastructura a fost poziționată la bord, pe suprafața din triclad, în vederea montajului.

Premieră la Damen Galaţi

The Amels Custom 77-metre yacht, yard number 312476, recently marked another premiere for Damen Shipyards Galați. Following the completion of the one-block aluminum superstructure it was lifted and placed on the hull of the vessel for final assembly. The synchronized manoeuvre took place inside the New Hall and was performed using the two overhead cranes.

The operation is even more impressive when the dimensions of the superstructure are considered. It measures 44.8 metres in length, 12.5 metres across and 10.1 metres in height. Its total weight is 108 tonnes.

A detail that illustrates both the quality of the craftsmanship and the accuracy of the Galati shipbuilders is that the lift of the elevator’s upper part was fitted inside the superstructure before the whole structure was lifted on board the ship.

Further on, the superstructure was placed on board, on triclad area, ready for assembly.

”Being welder is a hard but very nice job!”

It’s 12 years since she began working at Damen Shipyards Galati, the place where she happily comes to work each day.

FROM PIZZA TO HULL DIVISION I WELDINGShe has never found it difficult to work. She started her first job at 13 and a half, dispensing ice cream in the Central Square. "I was thinking: will I know how to handle myself in life?” recalls Uca. “When my employer asked if I had an identity card, I said I had. I asked her to let me sell the ice cream she was making for two weeks and told her that if she wasn't happy, she could send me home. She took good care of me and I stayed there for almost seven years, until the new halls opened.”

“I worked while I attended Anghel Saligny High School. There I took the sanitary and gas fitter courses. After that I went to work at a pizzeria. I stayed there for seven years, of which only one year and three months was with legal employment documents. What I disliked about the pizzeria was the fact that I only had five days of leave per year and the employer treated us badly. After seven years there I resigned and came to the shipyard, where I first took a training course as a welder. There were only boys in the piping workshop then and all my neighbours on my street that I talked to suggested to me that I become a welder. I went for an interview at the yard and a week later they offered me a job. After a six-month course I was employed as a welder at Hull Division I. Then I worked for two years at the Mechanical Facility on nozzles, and after that was closed I went back to the Section Building workshop of Hull Division I Welding.”

“A TRAINING COURSE IS ONE THING, PRODUCTION IS ANOTHER”Even though he doesn’t consider his job a difficult one Her first experiences with Hull Division I Welding were hard. "Doing a course is one thing, production is a completely different matter. The procedures I work with are MIG-MAG type, which can be difficult as it involves working in spaces that are narrow. can hardly find a proper position in which to work and sometimes it can take you half an hour to weld a single corner angle. I was lucky enough to have a very good mentor, Mrs. Lenuța Craciun. I liked it that she never gave up on me and never said I can't. I have tried to follow in her footsteps and, in my turn, I don’t

say I cannot. I don't give up until I have tried the impossible. I have to find solutions and I have to do my job as well as possible,” says Maria Papadopol, with conviction.

CHILDREN ARE ANY MOTHER’S JOYThe hardest part was when she returned to work after maternity leave. “I stayed at home for two years, and when I returned to the yard it was difficult. There wasn’t anyone to help me. My mother was also ill at the time so I had to take care of her as well. I was going to sleep at midnight and waking up at 4 o’clock in the morning. My husband and father helped me as much as they could but, with the babies being twins as well as girls, when one cried, the other cried too. I had two harnesses, one on my front and the other on my back, when I was cooking or vacuuming. My husband worked from 7am to 8pm in the evening.“

“I thank God that my daughters are now grown up enough to help me with some chores. Children are any mother’s joy and I think we would not feel fulfilled without children. My girls have only visited the yard once, for a launching ceremony. They liked it, they saw the ship sliding into the water and they want to come again,“ confesses Uca Papadopol.

„I SLIP EASILY INTO NARROW SPACES”A working day for Uca starts at 6 o’clock in the morning. "In the morning, the foreman briefs us on what we have to do that day. He might say to me: ‘Maria, there is a hole! Or more than that, which must be welded.’ This is my activity for the day.” Until 15:45, Uca helps all the colleagues who need her support: “Being smaller and slimmer than my colleagues, it is easier for me to slip into narrow spaces. If I struggle to enter a space, how much worse would it be for a taller or bulkier colleague to get in? The yachts for example are smaller and from the start the double bottom and the other cavities are all smaller, so being a woman is an advantage. No one can say it is easy to be a welder, it is really a very hard job, but at the same time it is also very beautiful.“ “Many people ask me if it's not too hard. At first it was, when I didn't know what is all about, but now I am fortunate to be at the Welding Workshop – Hull Division I, in a team of 22 people of whom ten are girls and we all get along well with each other. That is also thanks to our foreman, Mr. Socrate Macovei.”

"I love engines very much. I like taking them to pieces then putting everything back together again. I go to my garage and work there whenever I have time. I had two motorcycles, one I broke during my accident, the other one I still have but haven’t ridden her for a while. I like to repair or improve them; I really enjoy the mechanics. It's my passion. But this requires time and now all my time goes to my child. Before having my son I used to spend a lot of time in the garage on Saturdays and Sundays,”, admits Petrişor, whose role of Daddy fits him best.

“I ALWAYS LIKE TO LEARN SOMETHING NEW”Speaking of her foreman, Uca says he is a special person: "He is a very good man. Since I have been at the yard I have had the opportunity to work almost everywhere. What I like most about Mr. Macovei, or Uncle, as we call him, is that he knows how to connect his people. It is important that we all understand each other and work as a team, helping each other. It’s like having a second family. Mr. Macovei never discriminates against us or tells us that as we are women we cannot do certain things. When there have been emergencies at the weekends, the women are always among those who come to work and put the shoulder to the wheel. Others may still have the misconception that a woman cannot do as much as a man, but Mr. Socrate Macovei always gives credit to us, the women, when it is deserved. Even when it comes to promotions", says Uca Papadopol.

“THE JOB CANNOT BE DONE USING ONLY A COMPUTER OR PEN”Socrate Macovei has worked at the yard since 1984. During all those years, he claims that from the very beginning he has always known what task he should assign to whom. Before committing to a project, he gathers his team and asks: ”What do you say, shall we undertake the aft works on this ship? I take two or three of the young men and, with me in the lead, we see what it is about and we commit to do the work. The first thing we need to think about is: do we have everything we need to handle it? Everyone has the opportunity to have their say. The job is not done only using a computer or pen”, says Macovei.

“There are 22 people in my team”, he says. “Working with people is the hardest task. I cannot accommodate everyone unless I am impartial and listen to what everyone has to say. I know what everyone is capable of. I started from the ground up and haven’t forgotten it. People still make mistakes. They are mine and they are dear to me. I understand them when it is understandable. It is for them that I do the job," says Uncle Socrate, adding: "When it comes to the most difficult jobs, Uca does them. I once had to pull her out of a tank with my bare hands when she was overcome with sickness, but that job had to be done, I had no other choice. There is another small member of my team, a young man called Gicu. He and Uca are the team elfs”.

Along with being their chief, Socrate Macovei is also their friend and support. They call upon him when they are in difficulties but also in moments of happiness.

THE YARD – MORE THAN JUST A WORKPLACEUca Papadopol admits: “As an employee, when you feel that the boss is consulting you, that is really motivating. It means the boss trusts you and that you have to work hard so that everything is done on time. We are only people, we can never know what difficulties life will throw at us and if you do not help each other when they are in need, then it is all for nothing.“

“The yard is more than a workplace. We spend most of our time here. This is where we make friends and where we learn to help each other. In the yard I have learned to be a human, first and foremost. When the team is a large one, you can rarely get along with everyone, but even though there are still moments of tension I have learned to let go until the storm passes. I am not ashamed to let things go and I am not ashamed to admit when I am wrong or to apologize. It is important to respect each other. In my family, we are four siblings and our parents taught us to love each other and stay together.“

“I FEEL RESPECTED HERE”"If I could have my time over again, I would still work here,” says Maria Papadopol. “Maybe it’s because where I came from. There I was not respected, but here I feel respected from all points of view. My work is appreciated, which matters a lot to me. The programme here is the programme, respect is respect, work is work and the satisfaction matches the scale of the work. When you see that the foreman appreciates your work and says "Bravo!", this matters enormously."

HOW TO KEEP YOUR COURAGE IN A CRISISA welder’s work is not without moments of crisis, and not everyone can cope with that. ”At the SeaXplorer, for example, I went inside a tank, a very confined space,” recalls Uca. “I was in a hurry to finish and when I came out I felt sick, but when I felt the fresh air it was really bad.”

“I once went into a ventilation space, a very narrow one, and I reached a point where I couldn't go any further. My lamp went out, there was smoke in the air and I felt I was stuck. But then I told myself to sit back for a while and just relax. I knew that I could only get back out the way that I had come in. They were not going to cut the vessel in two just to get me out. I relaxed for about a minute, and it also helped a good deal that I do not panic easily. Then I told myself that as I went in forwards, I would get out backwards. In fact, I think I most scared when the light went out. I started to move backwards slowly and thought to myself, working to regain my courage, that most probably another person could fit in here anyway. Self-control matters a lot in such situations, because when you panic you feel like you are swelling up and then you really are stuck,” says our lady-welder.

”IF YOU WANT TO WORK, NOTHING SEEMS HARD””To do this job, you must, first of all, like it. You come and take the courses and then, if you like it, continue with it and, if not, then walk away. You have to enjoy work to do it properly and if you really want to do that work, nothing seems hard. It is, of course, hard everywhere in the beginning. But if you tell yourself that you can succeed, you will find the resources to do so in yourself. It’s all about the desire to work, and if you really want to, you can.”“I always tell my girls something that my mother used to say: ‘there is no ”I cannot”, there is only ”I don’t

want”!’ Advantages and disadvantages come with every job. For us, if it's summer it's too hot, and if it's winter it's too cold. But if you enjoy your work, you don't notice these things after a while. It’s not hard for me to wake up at 3:40 in the morning, It’s the people that make a job good or bad. And I'm lucky to have good people at my workplace. For me it is a great honour to see that my supervisors appreciate me. As a worker, I will strive even more so they are satisfied with me. A 'Bravo' can mean more than all the money in the world,” concludes our brave welder.

Maria Papadopol is a role model. Both at work, where she does things that others find impossible, and at home where, for her family, Uca is a source of continuous inspiration, an example of a beautiful and diligent woman who manages to do everything as well as she can.

„Meseria de sudor e grea, dar foarte frumoasă!”

BUCURIA ORICĂREI MAME SUNT COPIIICel mai greu i-a fost când s-a întors la serviciu după concediul de creștere a copiilor. „Am stat doi ani acasă, iar când am revenit în Șantier mi-a fost greu. Nici nu a avut cine să mă ajute, mama fiind bolnavă, de ea tot eu am grijă. Mă culcam la 12 noaptea, iar la 4 dimineața mă trezeam. Soțul și tatăl meu m-au ajutat atât cât au putut. Fiind gemene este adevărat că fetele simt la fel, când plânge una, plânge și cealaltă. Aveam două hamuri, când făceam mâncare sau dădeam cu aspiratorul un ham îl aveam în față, unul în spate. Soțul muncea de dimineață de la 7 până la 8 seara. Mulțumesc lui Dumnezeu că acum sunt destul de mari să mă ajute la unele treburi. Bucuria oricărei mame sunt copiii și cred că nu ne-am simți împlinite dacă nu am avea copii. Fetele mele au venit o singură dată în Șantier, la o lansare. Le-a plăcut, au văzut vaporul în momentul lansării. Vor să mai vină”, mărturisește Uca Papadopol.

„MĂ STRECOR UȘOR ÎN SPAȚIILE ÎNGUSTE”O zi de muncă pentru Uca începe la 6 dimineața. ”Dimineață, maistrul ne repartizează ceea ce avem de făcut în ziua respectivă. Îmi spune: Maria, vezi că este o gaură! Sau mai multe, care trebuie sudate. Asta e activitatea mea”. Până la 15.45, Uca îi ajută pe toți colegii care au nevoie. „Fiind mai mică, mai subțirică, e normal să mă strecor eu în spațiile înguste. Dacă eu mă chinui să încap de multe ori, cum ar putea intra un coleg mai înalt sau mai plinuț? Yachturile, de exemplu, au fost mai mici din start iar dublu fundul și toate spațiile au fost mai mici, așa că... e un avantaj să fii femeie. Nu poți să spui că meseria de sudor nu este grea, este foarte grea. Dar, în același timp, este și foarte frumoasă. Mulți mă întreabă dacă nu mi-e greu. La început a fost greu, nu știam cu ce se mănâncă. Dar acum am norocul de a fi la Atelier Sudură – Secția I, într-o brigadă de 22 de persoane, dintre care 10 suntem fete și ne înțelegem cu toții foarte bine. Asta și datorită maistrului, domnul Socrate Macovei”.

BĂDIA SOCRATE – MAISTRUL CARE UNEȘTE OAMENII Vorbind despre domnul maistru, Uca spune că este un om deosebit: „Este un om foarte bun. De când sunt în șantier am avut ocazia să lucrez mai peste tot. Cel mai mult îmi place la domnul Macovei, sau Bădia, cum îi spunem noi, faptul că știe să își unească oamenii. Contează foarte mult să ne înțelegem și să ne ajutăm între noi. A doua familie asta este, cea de la serviciu. Domnul Macovei nu a făcut niciodată discriminare, să ne spună că dacă suntem femei nu putem face un anumit lucru. Când au fost urgențe, sâmbete, duminici, tot femeile au venit și au pus umărul. Alții poate mai au concepția greșită că o femeie nu poate face cât face un bărbat. Domnul maistru Socrate Macovei ne-a dat

În februarie se împlinesc 12 ani de când lucrează în Șantierul Naval Damen Galați, locul unde vine cu drag la serviciu, zi de zi. DE LA PIZZERIE LA SECȚIA I SUDURĂNiciodată nu i s-a părut greu să muncească. Primul job l-a avut la 13 ani și jumătate. A început ca preparator de înghețată în Piața Centrală, la un dozator. „Mă gândeam: oare voi ști să mă descurc în viață? Când m-a întrebat patroana dacă am buletin, i-am spus că am. Am rugat-o să mă lase să vând înghețată două săptămâni și i-am spus că, dacă nu e mulțumită, să mă trimită acasă. Și uite așa a prins drag de mine și am rămas acolo aproape șapte ani, până când s-au deschis halele noi”, își amintește Uca.

„Munceam și mergeam și la școală, la Liceul Anghel Saligny, unde am urmat profilul Instalator sanitar și gaze. Apoi m-am angajat la o pizzerie. Am stat șapte ani acolo, din care doar un an și trei luni cu carte de muncă. Ce nu mi-a plăcut la pizzerie e faptul că aveam doar cinci zile de concediu pe an, iar patroana se purta urât cu noi. După șapte ani mi-am dat demisia și am venit în Șantier, unde am făcut mai întâi cursul de calificare ca sudor. La tubulatură erau doar băieți, și toți vecinii mei de pe stradă cu care am mai vorbit m-au îndemnat să mă fac sudoriță. Am dat un interviu și apoi m-au chemat după o săptămână. Am făcut cursul de șase luni și m-am angajat ca sudoriță în Secția I. Apoi am muncit vreo doi ani la Secția Mecanică, la duze, iar după ce s-a desființat, m-am întors la Asamblat, la Secția I Sudură”, povestește Maria Papadopol.

„UNA E LA CURSUL DE CALIFICARE, CU TOTUL ALTA E ÎN PRODUCȚIE”Primul impact cu Secția I Sudură a fost puternic. „Una e la curs, cu totul alta e în producție. Procedeele în care lucrez sunt MIG-MAG. Dificultatea vine și din faptul că spațiile sunt înguste, nu ai poziție, uneori îți poate lua și o jumătate de oră să sudezi un guseu. Am avut un mentor foarte bun, pe doamna Lenuța Crăciun. Îmi plăcea că nu se dădea niciodată bătută și nu zicea nu pot. Am încercat să îi calc pe urme și, la rândul meu, nu spun că nu pot. Nu mă dau bătută până nu încerc imposibilul. Trebuie să găsesc soluții și trebuie să îmi fac cât se poate de bine treaba”, spune cu convingere Maria Papadopol.

Se numește Maria Papadopol, dar toți colegii îi spun Uca. Are 36 de ani și ochii

albaștri ca un cer senin. Este căsătorită de 12 ani și este mama a două fete gemene

de 9 ani și jumătate.

întotdeauna credit nouă, femeilor. Inclusiv când s-a pus problema promovărilor”, mai spune Uca Papadopol.

„TREABA NU SE FACE NUMAI DIN CALCULATOR SAU NUMAI DIN PIX”Socrate Macovei lucrează în Șantier din 1984. După atâția ani recunoaște că de la bun început știe ce sarcină va repartiza și cui. Înainte de a se angaja la o lucrare mai mare, îi strânge pe toți și îi întreabă: ce spuneți, luăm pupa de la vaporul ăsta? „Iau doi-trei băieți și, cu mine în frunte, vedem despre ce este vorba și ne angajăm să facem lucrarea. Prima dată trebuie gândit: avem cu ce face față? Ne sfătuim cu toții. Treaba nu se face numai din calculator sau numai din pix”, declară cu convingere maistrul Macovei.

„În brigada mea sunt 22. A lucra cu omul este cel mai greu. Eu nu pot să îi împac pe toți decât dacă sunt imparțial și nu aplec urechea la ce îmi spune unul sau altul. Eu știu ce poate să facă fiecare. La rândul meu, eu am plecat de jos și nu am uitat. Oamenii mai și greșesc. Sunt ai mei și îmi sunt dragi. Îi înțeleg atunci când e de înțeles. Eu cu ei fac treabă”, afirmă Bădia Socrate, adăugând: „Ce e mai greu și mai greu, Uca face. Am scos-o și în brațe din tanc, când i-a venit rău. Dar trebuia făcut, nu aveam încotro. Mai am un băiat, Gicu, ei doi sunt spiridușii formației”.

Înainte de a le fi șef, Socrate Macovei le este prieten și sprijin. La el apelează și când au momente de cumpănă, dar și când au motive de sărbătoare.

ȘANTIERUL - MAI MULT DECÂT UN LOC DE MUNCĂUca Papadopol recunoaște: „Ca angajat, când vezi că șeful se sfătuiește cu tine, acest lucru te motivează. Înseamnă că șeful are încredere în tine. Și că trebuie să tragi tare în așa fel încât totul să fie gata la timp. Suntem oameni, în viață nu știi peste ce greutăți dai, iar dacă nu ajuți omul atunci când are nevoie și când îi este greu, degeaba. Șantierul este mai mult decât un loc de muncă. Aici stăm cea mai mare parte din timp. Aici mi-am câștigat foarte mulți prieteni și am învățat să ne ajutăm unul pe altul. În Șantier am învățat să fiu Om, înainte de toate. Când sunt echipe mai mari, rareori poți să te înțelegi cu toți. Chiar dacă mai sunt și momente de tensiune, am învățat să las de la mine până trece furtuna. Nu mi-e rușine să las de la mine și nu mi-e rușine să recunosc atunci când greșesc sau să îmi cer scuze. Important este să ne respectăm unii pe ceilalți. Noi acasă suntem patru frați, iar părinții ne-au învățat să ne iubim unii pe ceilalți și să fim uniți”.

„AICI MĂ SIMT RESPECTATĂ”„Dacă aș da timpul înapoi, tot aici m-aș angaja. Poate și pentru faptul că acolo de unde am venit nu eram respectată, aici pot spune că mă simt respectată din toate punctele de vedere. Munca îmi este recunoscută, ceea ce contează foarte mult pentru mine. Programul aici este program, respectul e respect, munca e muncă iar satisfacțiile sunt pe măsura muncii. Când vezi că maistrul îți recunoaște munca și îți spune „Bravo!”, contează enorm”, mărturisește Maria Papadopol.

CUM SĂ ÎȚI PĂSTREZI CURAJUL ÎN SITUAȚII LIMITĂÎn munca unui sudor sunt și situații limită, cărora nu

oricine le-ar putea face față. „La Explorer, de exemplu, am intrat în tanc, spațiu închis, mă grăbeam să termin, dar când am ieșit simțeam că mi se face rău, iar când am luat contact cu aerul chiar mi s-a făcut rău”, își amintește Uca.

„O dată am intrat într-o ventilație, într-un spațiu extrem de îngust și nu am putut să mai ies. Mi s-a stins și lampa, era și fum, am simțit că m-am blocat. Și atunci mi-am zis: ia stai un pic, hai să mă întind și mă relaxez. Cum am intrat, așa trebuie să și ies, doar n-or să taie vaporul ca să pot eu să ies. M-am relaxat cam un minut, m-a ajutat și faptul că de felul meu eu nu sunt panicoasă. Contează foarte mult. Apoi mi-am spus: am intrat cu fața, voi ieși cu spatele. De fapt, cred că m-am speriat mai tare când am văzut că s-a făcut și întuneric beznă. Am ieșit încet cu spatele și mă gândeam în sinea mea, recăpătându-mi curajul: cred că mai avea încă unul loc pe lângă mine. Autocontrolul contează foarte mult în asemenea situații. Când te panichezi parcă te și umfli și atunci chiar că rămâi înțepenit”, spune cu convingere sudorița.

„DACĂ VREI SĂ MUNCEȘTI, NIMIC NU-ȚI PARE GREU”„Ca să poată face cineva această meserie trebuie în primul rând să îi placă. Să vină, să facă cursurile și, dacă vede că îi place, să continue, dacă nu, nu. Să le placă să muncească. Dacă vrei într-adevăr să muncești, nu ți se pare greu absolut nimic. Greu e peste tot la început. Dar dacă îți spui că trebuie să reușești, găsești în tine resurse. Totul este să vrei, iar dacă vrei, poți. Eu și acasă le spun fetelor mele vorba mamei mele: nu există nu pot, există doar nu vreau! Avantaje și dezavantaje sunt la fiecare loc de muncă. La noi, dacă e vară e prea cald, dacă e iarnă e prea frig. Dar dacă vii de drag la muncă nu mai vezi lucrurile astea. Nu mi-e greu să mă trezesc dimineața la 4 fără 20. Oamenii sunt cei care fac ca un loc de muncă să fie bun sau rău. Iar eu am norocul de oameni buni la locul meu de muncă. Pentru mine e o mare onoare să văd că șefii mei mă apreciază. Ca muncitor, îmi voi da silința și mai mult, ca să fie mulțumiți de mine. Un Bravo poate să însemne mai mult decât toți banii din lume”, conchide curajoasa sudoriță.

Maria Papadopol este un model de urmat. Atat la serviciu, unde face lucruri imposibile pentru alții, cât și acasă, pentru familia ei, Uca este o sursă de inspirație continuă, un exemplu de om frumos și sârguincios, care reușește să le facă pe toate cât de bine poate.

REDEVELOPING AND IMPROVING THE FUNCTIONALITY OF DANUBE CLIFF AND ŢIGLINA VALLEY2019, named the Year of Galati Innovation by its people, has also been the year when the town municipality decided to organize two project competitions with the aim to "Redevelop and Improve the Functionality of Danube Cliff and Ţiglina Valley".

Ideas submitted included the consolidation of the slope facing the Danube, the construction of a dam intended to prevent the lower cliff from flooding, the transfer of the roller and bicycle tracks, the building of small squares for viewing the metal sculptures, the building of three underground car parks with promenades and pinnacles on top, and the revitalization of Cloşca park. These are just a few of the imaginative projects registered with the urban planning contest organized by the municipality.

On October 4, the City Hall headquarters hosted the judging of the projects announced the criteria for awarding the points. These were: originality, relevance, and urban solutions presented in sympathy with the specific characteristics of the areas. Among the jury members were: Sorin Enache - deputy mayor of Galati, Dragoş Horia Buhociu - chief architect of Galati, Cristian Capetis - director of the Infrastructure and Public Works Development Directorate, Gabriel Pascariu - Romanian Urbanists Register, Cristina Enache - University of Architecture and Urbanism "Ion Mincu" Bucharest, Cătălin Fetecău - "Dunărea de Jos" University Galați, Ciprian Ciocan - Mile 80 Association and Damen Galaţi represented by Oana Caraman - Head of Maintenance and Investments.

”It was a real joy to participate as a member of the jury for this competition,” said Oana Caraman, head of Maintenance and Investments at Damen Galați. “The biggest surprise was the secret ballot of the proposed projects. We have awarded the maximum score to what we regarded as the most innovative idea view. We were excited to meet the project promoter and give him/her an honorary award as ingenious as the project itself.”

EDUCATIONAL GUIDANCE FOR THE CHILDREN FROM "CUVÂNTUL ÎNTRUPAT” CHARITYPoverty and the need or desire for a better life are just some of the causes of high rates of absenteeism and young people dropping out of school. In Galati there are several day centers that have implemented after-school programmes. Children living in poor neighborhoods and belonging to disadvantaged families can enroll at these centers to receive support with their homework from volunteers and teachers.

"Cuvântul Întrupat" Foundation is a center for supporting children from the neighbourhoods around Damen Galati. There, the children receive educational support and guidance, courses about hygiene, hot showers and cooked meals which, for most of them, is their only meal of the day.

„Cuvântul Întrupat” is one of the charities supported by our company. To provide proper conditions for the forty children at this center, Damen Shipyards Galati has purchased a wide range of supplies, from kitchen furniture to sporting goods such as rollers, footballs, tennis paddles and mopeds.

As a result the center now benefits now from a kitchen equipped with all the necessary utensils for preparing meals, and the children can spend their free time engaged in various sports activities.

Via the Children in Need project, the 40 young people supported by "Cuvântul Întrupat" Foundation benefit from school supplies and endowments worth 10,967.18 lei (€2,300).

PLANTING TREES FOR CLEANER AIRUnder this slogan over 30 volunteers of all shapes and sizes gathered together on Saturday, November 9, to improve the yard’s environment and landscaping.

Properly equipped with all the necessary tools, the enthusiastic volunteers planted over 80 trees in the green area near the main gate.

This initiative is the beginning of a forestation campaign that we want to extend beyond the yard premises, a campaign whose details will be announced in due course, and with which we hope that many of you will become involved.

parcări subterane pe acoperişul cărora să fie amenajate locuri de promenadă şi belvedere, revitalizarea parcului Cloşca sunt doar câteva dintre proiectele ingenioase înscrise în concursul urbanistic organizat de Primărie. În data de 4 octombrie, sediul Primăriei a fost gazda jurizării ideilor de proiect înscrise. Regulamentul de concurs vizează criteriile de acordare a punctelor: originalitatea, respectarea tematicii, soluţii urbanistice propuse în tandem cu specificul zonelor. Printre juraţii titulari: Sorin Enache – viceprimarul Galaţiului, Dragoş Horia Buhociu – arhitect şef al Municipiului Galaţi, Cristian Capetis – directorul Direcţiei Dezvoltare Infrastructură şi Lucrări Publice, Gabriel Pascariu – Registrul Urbaniştilor din România, Cristina Enache – Universitatea de Arhitectură şi Urbanism „Ion Mincu” Bucureşti, Cătălin Fetecău – Universitatea „ Dunărea de Jos” din Galați, Ciprian Ciocan – Asociaţia Mila 80, s-a numărat şi Şantierul Naval Damen Galaţi reprezentat de Oana Caraman – şef departament Mentenanţă şi Investiţii.

„A fost o adevărată bucurie să particip în premieră ca jurat la aceste concursuri. Surpriza cea mai mare a fost jurizarea secretă a ideilor de proiect propuse. Am acordat punctajul maxim celei mai inovative idei, din punctul nostru de vedere. Suntem entuziasmaţi să cunoaştem promotorul proiectului şi să îi acordăm un premiu onorific la fel de ingenios precum ideea lui” – Oana Caraman, şef departament Mentenanţă şi Investiţii Damen Galați.

ÎNDRUMARE EDUCAȚIONALĂ PENTRU COPIII ASISTAȚI DE LA FUNDAŢIA „CUVÂNTUL ÎNTRUPAT”Sărăcia, nevoile sau dorinţa de a avea un trai mai bun sunt doar câteva dintre cauzele care favorizeaza absenteismul şi abandonul şcolar. În municipiul Galaţi sunt înfiinţate câteva centre de zi, ce au implementat programul şcoală după şcoală. Copiii ce trăiesc în cartierele sărace şi fac parte din familii defavorizate se pot înscrie în aceste centre pentru a beneficia de ajutor la teme din partea unor voluntari şi a unor educatori.

Fundaţia „Cuvântul Întrupat” este centrul în care au acces copiii din cartierele vecine ale Şantierului Naval Damen Galaţi. Acolo, cei mici primesc ajutor şi îndrumare educaţională, lecţii de igienă, precum şi un duş cald şi mâncare gătită, pentru majoritatea dintre ei aceasta fiind singura masă din zi.

Printre fundaţiile sprijinite de Şantierul Naval Damen Galaţi se numără şi Fundaţia „Cuvântul Întrupat”. Pentru a le asigura un mediu prielnic, compania noastră a achiziţionat pentru cei 40 de copii înscrişi în centru nenumărate rechizite, mobilier pentru bucătărie şi articole sportive precum: role, mingi de fotbal, palete de tenis, motorete.

Astfel, centrul beneficiază acum de o bucătărie echipată cu toate ustensilele necesare pentru prepararea meselor, iar copiii îşi pot petrece timpul liber implicându-se în diferite activităţi sportive.

În cadrul proiectului Copii aflați în nevoie, cele 40 de persoane asistate din cadrul Fundației „Cuvântul întrupat” beneficiază de rechizite şcolare și dotări în valoare de 10.967,18 lei.

SĂDEŞTE UN COPAC PENTRU UN VIITOR MAI CURATSub această deviză, peste 30 de voluntari s-au adunat cu mic cu mare sâmbătă, 9 noiembrie, pentru a participa la ȋnfrumuseţarea şantierului.

Echipaţi adecvat şi având la dispoziţie toate sculele necesare, entuziaştii voluntari au plantat peste 80 de copaci ȋn zona verde din vecinătatea porţii principale. Această iniţiativă reprezintă ȋnceputul unei campanii de ȋmpădurire pe care ne dorim să o extindem şi ȋn afara spaţiului de lucru, campanie ale cărei detalii vor fi anunţate ȋn timp util şi la care vă aşteptăm ȋntr-un număr cât mai mare.

Pe 3 octombrie, Şantierul Naval Damen Galaţi a găzduit ceremonia de punere a chilei la Draga pentru Materiale Agregate (MAD) 3500 aflată în construcţie pentru firma Hanson din Marea Britanie. La eveniment au participat reprezentanţi atât din partea Damen Shipyards Group cât şi din partea clientului, Hanson UK.

Evenimentul a avut în prim plan respectarea tradiţiei care implică ataşarea a patru monede de chila navei – un leu românesc, o liră englezească, un gulden olandez şi o monedă euro.

MAD aduce un design Damen nou care permite dragajul materialelor la adâncimi de până la -55 de metri. Conceptul utilizează tehnologii maritime inovatoare care asigură funcţionarea în condiţii grele de lucru – Hanson va opera această navă în Canalul Mânecii şi Marea Nordului – fără compromisuri asupra siguranţei.

Directorul de Vânzări Damen, Joppe Neijens explică de ce această navă constituie o prioritate pentru ambele părţi. “Siguranţa este de o importanţă supremă pentru ambele companii şi de aceea, reprezintă principala prioritate în cadrul procesului de construcţie a acestei nave dar şi ulterior. Am implementat Programul de Guvernanţă a Riscurilor şi Incidentelor (GRIP), care stabileşte standardele de sănătate, siguranţă şi protecţie a mediului în cadrul Damen Group. Suntem foarte încântaţi să sărbătorim acest moment deosebit de important şi aşteptăm cu nerăbdare finalizarea construcţiei acestei nave spectaculoase.”

Draga MAD 3500 este în construcţie la Damen Galaţi, sistemul modular de dragaj urmând a fi asigurat de Damen Dredging Equipment din Nijkerk, Olanda. MAD 3500 va fi, de asemenea dotată cu un sistem de descărcare uscată a materialelor produs de companía PLM Cranes.

Hanson se numără printre cei mai mari producători europeni de nisip şi pietriş extras de pe fundul mării. Compania este totodată, unul din liderii furnizorilor de materiale de construcţie pentru industria grea, producând materiale agregate, betoane gata amestecate şi ciment & produse pe bază de ciment.

Ȋn discursul său de la ceremonia de punere a chilei, directorul general al companiei Hanson, Simon Willis a precizat: “Investiţia noastră în această dragă nouă ne va aduce un produs din avangarda standardelor de siguranţă, performanţă şi sustenabilitate. Damen a preluat abordarea noastră prin care acordăm siguranţei principalul rol în cadrul activităţilor desfăşurate de navă şi este impresionant să vedem acest lucru derulându-se în prezent la Galaţi. Aşteptăm cu nerăbdare să primim acest nou exemplar al flotei Hanson în 2021.”

On 3rd October, Damen Shipyards Galati hosted a celebration marking the keel-laying of a Damen Marine Aggregate Dredger (MAD) 3500 for Hanson UK. The event was well attended by representatives from both Damen Shipyards Group and Hanson UK.

At the event, tradition was observed with the inclusion of four coins in the keel – a Romanian leu, a British pound, a Dutch guilder and a euro.

The MAD is a new design from Damen that can dredge material at depths of up to 55 meters. It applies innovative maritime technology to ensure operability in harsh conditions – Hanson will operate its vessel in the English Channel and the North Sea – without compromising on safety.

Damen sales manager Joppe Neijens explains that this is a priority for both parties. “Safety is of extreme importance for both our companies and will therefore be a robust priority throughout the construction of this vessel and beyond. We have implemented the Governance of Risks and Incidents Programme (GRIP) which sets the standards for health, safety and the environment for the Damen Group. We are very pleased to celebrate this momentous occasion and look forward to the construction of this exciting vessel.”

The MAD 3500 will be constructed at the Galati yard while the modular dredge system will be provided by Damen Dredging Equipment in Nijkerk, the Netherlands. Hanson’s MAD 3500 will also feature a dry unloading system from PLM Cranes.

Hanson is amongst Europe’s largest producers of marine dredged sand and gravel. The company is a leading supplier of building materials to the heavy construction industry, producing aggregates, ready-mixed concrete, asphalt and cement & cement-related products.

Speaking at the celebration to mark the keel laying, Hanson UK’s chief executive officer Simon Willis said: “Our investment in this new dredger will provide a vessel at the cutting edge of safety, performance and sustainability. Damen shares our approach in placing safety at the heart of all its activity and it’s been impressive to see this in action at the Galati yard. We look forward to welcoming the new addition to our Hanson Aggregate Marine fleet in 2021.”

The launching of the Damen Road Ferry 6819, YN 312539317, built for the Ministry of Transportation

Ontario, Canada, took place at Damen Galati on the 14th of November 2019.

The event, the last-but-one launching of 2019, was hosted by Hull Division I exactly eight months after another ferry

was successfully launched for the same Canadian client, on the 14th of March.

The Amherst Islander II is an open deck, ice-classed ferry, capable of carrying 40 cars. It represents the latest

innovations in both design and propulsion being capable, when operated in combination with the planned shore

charging infrastructure, of running on 100% electric power. The ferry will go into service next year at the eastern end of

Lake Ontario, one of the Great Lakes, at the mouth of the St Lawrence River on the route to Amherst Island. The vessel, which will be essentially emission-free, will carry more than

half a million passengers a year and will be the sole link between the island and the mainland.

At the ceremony all the stakeholders who had worked collaboratively to achieve this milestone were thanked for

their great efforts, exceptional craftsmanship and shipbuilding skills. Congratulations were proposed to all

involved on achieving this significant milestone.

The Lady Sponsor, Ms. Rowan Benning, made the traditional wishes to the vessel and broke the champagne bottle on

her bow while saying: ”May her sustainable electric heart be an inspiration and example for North America and the rest of the world, in the mission to preserve the planet for our

future generations.”

Lansarea navei Damen Road Ferry 6819, comanda nr. 312539317, construită pentru Ministerul Transporturilor din Ontario, Canada a avut loc la Şantierul Naval Damen Galaţi pe 14 noiembrie 2019.

Evenimentul, penultima lansare din an, s-a desfăşurat la secţia I după exact 8 luni de când, pe 14 martie, se lansa cu succes un alt feribot, şi tot pentru un client canadian.

Nava ”Amherst Islander II” este un feribot cu punte deschisă şi clasă de gheaţă, capabil să transporte 40 de vehicule şi are un concept inovativ de proiectare şi propulsie care, ȋn combinaţie cu sistemul inovativ de alimentare a infrastructurii de pe uscat, asigură o funcţionare 100% electrică. Feribotul va ȋncepe să opereze anul viitor ȋn zona de est a lacului Ontario, unul din Marile Lacuri canadiene, la gura râului St Lawrence, urmând să deserveasca insula Amherst. Nava, de tipul fără emisii, va putea transporta peste jumatate de milion de pasageri ȋn cursul unui an şi constituie unica legatură ȋntre această insulă şi restul comunităţii.

Au fost adresate mulţumiri tuturor celor implicaţi ȋn acest proiect şi care au colaborat la atingerea acestei etape din procesul de construcţie a navei prin eforturile lor, prin excepţionala măiestrie şi abilităţile dovedite. Felicitări tuturor pentru ȋndeplinirea acestei importante etape.

La rândul ei, naşa navei, Rowan Benning a spart sticla de şampanie adresând tradiţionalele urări de bine navei: ”Doresc acestei nave să fie o sursă de inspiraţie atât pentru America de Nord cât şi pentru ȋntregul mapamond şi ȋi urez succes ȋn misiunea de a păstra şi asigura generaţiilor viitoare o lume sustenabilă”.

The first of Damen’s new Marine Aggregate Dredger class, a 103.5-metre MAD 3500, was launched at Damen Shipyards Galati on August, 1. The vessel, to be named the CEMEX Go Innovation, is the result of close cooperation between CEMEX UK Marine and Damen and represents the first of a new generation of efficient and economical dredgers specialising in the extraction of sand and gravel from the seabed.

The ceremony involved the full team from owner CEMEX UK Marine as well as representatives from Damen’s head office in Gorinchem, the Netherlands, Damen Shipyards Galati and Damen Shipyards Mangalia, where the build began in July 2018. This carried on to the start of this year when the vessel was transferred to Galati for the final stages of the project.

Damen and CEMEX have worked jointly on the development of the MAD 3500 from its earliest stages and the design is the result of extensive market research and customer consultation. As such, the CEMEX Go Innovation represents the start of a new era for an aggregates industry that is faced with an aging fleet of vessels and an increased focus on marine activity. The MAD concept as a whole has been designed around the need for 21st century vessels that can deliver safety, efficiency, minimal environmental impact and maximum crew comfort. At the same time, they must achieve maximum uptime in a work environment that places great stresses on a vessel and its equipment.

Following its launch and with much of the deck equipment, including the Damen designed and built screening installation, installed, the MAD 3500 will complete its fitting out with commissioning due to begin at the end of the year, followed by delivery in the early spring of 2020.

Addressing the audience, Mark Williams, Fleet Engineering Manager, CEMEX Materials UK, commented: “Today we see the conversion a lot of hard work on technical drawings, calculations, ideas, energetic discussions and exchanges of points-of-view, into a physical floating object by the highly skilled women and men of Galati and Mangalia. We are proud to call all divisions of Damen our partners, being impressed with the professionalism, enthusiasm and commitment shown to delivering a quality, state-of-the art-vessel, turning our ambition at CEMEX into a reality.”

Prima Dragă Damen din clasa celor pentru Materiale Agregate Marine, de tip MAD 3500, cu o lungime de 103,5 metri a fost lansată la Galaţi pe 1 august. Nava, cu numele CEMEX Go Innovation, este rezultatul strânsei colaborari dintre CEMEX UK Marine şi Damen şi reprezintă prima de acest tip dintr-o generaţie de nave eficiente şi economice specializate în extracţia nisipului şi pietrişului de pe fundul mării.

La ceremonie au participat reprezentanţi ai clientului, CEMEX UK Marine precum şi ai Damen din Olanda, din Galaţi dar şi din Mangalia, acolo unde a început construcţia navei în iulie 2018. Procesul a continuat până la începutul acestui an când draga a fost transferată la Galaţi pentru etapele ulterioare, până la finalizare.

Damen şi CEMEX au lucrat împreună la realizarea MAD 3500 încă din primele stadii iar design-ul navei constituie rezultatul unor cercetări extinse de piaţă şi consultări cu clientul. Ca atare, CEMEX Go Innovation reprezintă începutul unei ere noi pentru industria de materiale agregate, industrie care dispune de o flotă relativ învechită şi totodată acordă o atenţie sporită industriei maritime. Conceptul MAD, pe ansamblu, a fost proiectat având la bază nevoia ca navele secolului 21 să poată asigura siguranţă, eficienţă, impact minim asupra mediului şi confort pentru echipaj. Ȋn acelaşi timp, ele trebuie să aibă o disponibilitate maximă într-un mediu de lucru care pune o presiune mare atât asupra navei cât şi asupra echipamentelor cu care aceasta este dotată.

După lansare şi având montate o mare parte din echipamentele de punte, inclusiv instalaţia de sortare proiectată şi construită de Damen, MAD 3500 va intra în etapa de commissioning, programată a se încheia la sfârşitul anului, urmată de livrare, la începutul primăverii viitoare.

Adresându-se participanţilor la eveniment, Mark Williams, Director Proiectare Flotă in cadrul CEMEX Materials UK, a declarat: “Astăzi, avem ocazia să vedem cum toată munca depusă, toate desenele tehnice, calculele, ideile, discuţiile energice şi schimburile de păreri se concretizează într-un obiect plutitor, şi asta prin eforturile extraordinare ale specialiştilor de la Galaţi şi Mangalia.“

This year, our welders won the team silver medal at the International Welding Competition in China. To recognise their acheivement the yard management organized, on Monday, September 30, an informal ceremony attended by both the winners and their foremen and colleagues from the Training Center and Welding Laboratory, as well as management representatives.

On this occasion the yard’s managing director, congratulated the winners, particularly commenting on the consistency of our team and the fact that their results honour the yard and contribute to the image that Damen Galaţi has in the shipbuilding world as a top company that is valued by its customers and business partners. The winners received promotional

Anul acesta, sudorii gălățeni au câștigat Medalia de argint pe echipe la Concursul Internaţional de Sudură din China. Pentru ei, conducerea Șantierului a organizat luni, 30 septembrie, o ceremonie informală, la care au participat atât premianţii, cât și maiștrii îndrumători, colegii de la Centrul de Training și de la Laboratorul de Sudură, dar și reprezentanţi ai conducerii.

Cu acest prilej, directorul general i-a felicitat pe câștigători apreciind în mod deosbit constanţa echipei noastre şi arătând că rezultatele acestora fac cinste Șantierului şi contribuie la imaginea pe care Damen Galaţi o are în lume, aceea a unei companii de top, apreciată de clienţi şi parteneri de afaceri.

Galati companies with the best results in business in 2018 were recognised on October 3, 2019, in the local edition of the National Top of Private Companies in Romania. That was followed by an awards ceremony that took place at "Fani Tardini" Dramatic Theater, and the launch of "The Romanian SMEs White Book for the S-E Region".

With a strong media presence, the event was opened by the president of the Galati SME Board of Trustees, Marian Filimon, who declared: "We want to celebrate performance and introduce the most significant contributors to the Galati economy". The criteria used to identify companies that qualify for this status include the previous year’s gross profit, turnover and the company’s total assets, as well as their results and any special contributions that they have made in their particular field.

Reflecting the local business dynamics, Damen Shipyards Galati ranked third with an average number of 2,482 employees, a turnover of 481.3 million lei and a gross profit of 40.42 million lei. In the first and second places were the local steelworks Liberty Galați, and steel products manufacturer Mairon Galaţi SA.

"We are proud to hear our name today at such an important event,” said Damen Galaţi Technical Director, Doru Gaibăr, at the ceremony. “And that we can contribute to the improvement of the local economy through employment and also through the contribution our company brings to the community via sponsored projects. This year we are celebrating 20 years since we became a member of the international Damen Group and 126 years since the yard was originally established, here on the Danube river. Both the prize and these beautiful moments are dedicated to our employees and collaborators.”

One of the traditional competitions organized by Damen Shipyards Galati is the fishing contest. This is very popular among our employees, many of whom

look forward to it year after year.

This year the fishing contest was divided into three stages: two pre-selection events followed by the

grande finale.

More than 200 employees competed in the pre-selections for the 25 places available in the final. Qualification was decided by the quantity of fish

each entrant caught, as weighed by the organizers.

The final took place in a relaxed and peaceful atmosphere, worthy of a competition organized in

Damen Galați.

The winner of this year's competition was Adam Ionel, who was rewarded with fishing tackle and gear.

The event concluded with a friendly lunch in the lunchroom of Hull Division I, to which all the

participants in the competition, including the two pre-selections, were invited.

At the awards ceremony, all the finalists received fishing gear from the organizers.

Unul dintre concursurile cu tradiţie ȋn Şantierul Naval Damen Galaţi, care se bucură de popularitate ȋn rândul salariaţilor şi sunt aşteptate cu interes, an de an este şi concursul de pescuit.

Competiția Cupa Navalistului la pescuit din acest an s-a desfășurat în mai multe etape: două faze de preselecție, urmate de finală.

Pentru preselecție s-au înscris peste 200 concurenți, iar în urma concursului s-au calificat pentru ultima etapă 25 de finaliști, în funcție de cantitatea de pește capturată și cântărită de organizatori.

Finala s-a desfășurat într-o atmosferă destinsă și liniștită, demnă de un concurs organizat în Șantierul Naval Damen Galați.

Cântarul a stabilit câștigătorul competiției din acest an, în persoana lui Adam Ionel, care a fost premiat de organizatori cu scule și unelte de pescuit. La final, toți participanții la această competiție, inclusiv la cele două preselecții, au servit împreună masa la microcantina Secției I.

La festivitatea de premiere toți finaliștii au primit din partea organizatorilor unelte de pescuit.

Accustomed to doing everything by the book in a professional manner, Galati shipbuilders cultivate their competitive spirit whenever they have the opportunity to do so.

On August 9th, the organisers of the 33rd edition of the Football Shipbuilders’ Cup announced the winners. The event, attended by supporters of the four teams involved and members of the yards’ management teams, was held on the artificial turf of THE GUNNERS SPORT CLUB.

The semi-final was a close match between the ATLETICO (Maintenance department) and MECHANICS (Mechanical facility) teams. With the score standing at 5 - 4 after penalty kicks, ATLETICO was the winner, thus taking third place in the overall standings.

The final brought the OLIMPIC (Hull Division I) and CHELSEA (Hull Division IA Section Building) teams onto the pitch. At the end of the highly disputed match, which also required a penalty shoot-out, the score was 5 - 3 in favor of OLIMPIC team, which thus became the winner of the SHIPBUILDERS’ FOOTBALL CUP 2019.

The Shipbuilders’ Football Cup

Obişnuiţi să facă lucrurile ca la carte nu doar ȋn plan profesional, navaliştii gălăţeni ȋşi cultivă spiritul competitiv ori de câte ori au ocazia.

În data de 9 august, cea de-a 33-a ediţie a Cupei Navalistului la fotbal şi-a desemnat câştigătorii.Evenimentul, la care au participat atât susţinători ai celor 4 echipe, cât şi membri ai conducerii, s-a desfăşurat pe terenul sintetic THE GUNNERS SPORT CLUB.

Semifinala a fost strânsă și a avut ca protagonişti jucătorii echipelor ATLETICO (departamentul Mentenanţă) şi MECANICII (secţia Mecanică). Cu scorul de 5 – 4 (după lovituri de penalti), echipa ATLETICO a câştigat, ocupând astfel locul al III-lea în clasamentul general.

Finala a adus apoi pe gazon echipele OLIMPIC (secţia I Cală Bazin) şi CHELSEA (secţia IA Asamblat). La finalul partidei extrem de disputate, ajunsă şi aceasta la lovituri de departajare, scorul a fost de 5 - 3 în favoarea echipei OLIMPIC, devenită astfel câştigătoarea CUPEI NAVALISTULUI 2019.

Cupa Navalistului la fotbal

The Health, Safety at Work and Environment competition organized at the company level took place on Wednesday, October 30, 2019.

The contest was a fierce one with the final scores showing two participants ranked in first place. A tie-break was needed, which consisted of 20 questions to be answered within a fixed time.

Final rankings were as follows:< Gavrilă Ciobotaru, Mechanical Facility - 78 points (60 after final test + 18 after tie-break)< Dumitrache Petrescu, Mechanical Facility - 77 points (60 after final test + 17 after tie-break) < Iulian Struţă, Mechanical Facility - 54 points out of 60

Our above three colleagues will represent Damen Galaţi at the national contest. Congratulations!

Concursul pe teme de Sănătate şi Securitate în Muncă şi Protecţie a Mediului organizat la nivelul companiei s-a desfăşurat miercuri, 30 octombrie 2019.

Ȋntrecerea a fost aprigă şi prin faptul că, pentru departajarea câştigătorilor locurilor 1 şi 2 a fost necesară o probă contra cronometru cu 20 de întrebări.

The photo contest organized in Damen Galaţi has become a popular monthly fixture that is open to both our company employees and our co-makers’ staff members. It is useful as well as enjoyable, helping us to promote Damen through snapshots of daily activities taking place in the yard.

Entering pictures for the contest is done as follows: those who wish to apply should send photos of vessels under construction or recently launched or anything else that is interesting or atmospheric that is related to life at Damen Galați. Damen Shipyards Galati’s business is complex and spectacular, so it shouldn’t be difficult for you to identify and catch, with a mobile phone, those images you consider deserve to participate in the contest.

In August, the best photo belonged to ALEXANDRA DULIBA, ship coordinator. The winner of September was DĂNUȚ FOTACHI, steel outfitter at Hull Division IA. October brought inspiration to IONUT BOGDAN IORDAN, steel outfitter at Hull Division IA and in November it was GEORGE BENESCU, project manager turn to win the best photo contest.

Concursul de fotografie organizat în cadrul Şantierului Naval Damen Galaţi are, deja, o frumoasă tradiție. Competiția este deschisă și se adresează, deopotrivă, salariaţilor companiei, dar și reprezentanților subcontractorilor, obiectivul principal fiind promovarea Damen prin instantanee din activitatea cotidiană.

Participarea la concurs se face astfel: cei care doresc să se înscrie trebuie să trimită imagini ale navelor aflate în construcţie sau recent lansate, fotografii sugestive care să aibă legătură cu viața din Șantierul Naval Damen Galați. August is, by tradition, the month when shipbuilders have the strongest reasons to celebrate. The Shipbuilders’ Day, which usually occurs on August 15, was instead held earlier this year, on Saturday, August 10, so that, being a weekend, all employees could enjoy the great Damen family party.

Moreover, the motto of the event – Damen anniversary at Galați: 20 years and counting - says everything about the significance and importance of this particular day, when Shipbuilders’ Day coincided with the 20th anniversary of the Dutch Damen group taking control of the Galati shipyard.

The event location was, as in previous years, the large parking lot within the yard premises. Everyone looked forward to the party, with memories still fresh of the great party last year when we celebrated 125 years of shipbuilding in Galați. The number of participants was even higher at this year's edition, a sign that shipbuilders stand together not only when it comes to work, but also when it comes to partying.

An important moment at the opening was the speech of our managing director, Rino Brugge, from which the shipbuilders there found out about the challenges ahead.Then, OLIX - Oliver Simionescu, DJ Kiss FM and the beautiful Sorina Ioniță - MC So, together with actor and MC Andrei Coman, created a superb atmosphere that ensured that everyone enjoyed the party.

Of course the Romanian folk music could not be left out of the artistic program. So the traditional part of the programme was provided by the members and singers of Doina Covurluiului Folk Orchestra from the Dunarea de Jos Cultural Center Galați.

Shipbuilders’ Day and 20 years of Damen at Galați

Luna august este, prin tradiție, luna în care navaliștii au un motiv de sărbătoare. Ziua Navalistului, care de obicei se sărbătorește pe 15 august, a fost devansată în acest an sâmbătă, 10 august. Ca să fie în week-end și să se poată bucura cu toții, alături de cei dragi, de sărbătoarea marii familii Damen.

De altfel, motto-ul evenimentului – 20 de ani marca Damen la Galați. Construim pe baze solide – spune totul despre semnificația și importanța evenimentului, Ziua Navalistului suprapunându-se anul acesta cu împlinirea a 20 de ani de când grupul olandez a cumpărat şantierul naval gălățean.

Locul ales a fost, ca și în anii trecuți, parcarea mare din incinta şantierului. Evenimentul a fost așteptat cu bucurie, participanţii având proaspătă în minte grandioasa petrecere de anul trecut, când s-au aniversat 125 de ani de construcții navale la Galați. Numărul participanților a fost chiar mai mare la ediția din acest an, semn că navaliștii sunt uniți nu doar când e vorba despre muncă, ci și la distracție.

Un moment important din deschidere l-a constituit discursul directorului general Rino Brugge, prilej cu care navaliștii au aflat despre noile provocări care îi așteaptă.

Apoi, OLIX - Oliver Simionescu, DJ la Kiss FM și frumoasa Sorina Ioniță - MC So au creat, alături de actorul și prezentatorul Andrei Coman, o atmosferă de zile mari și i-au făcut pe toți cei prezenți să se bucure de sărbătoarea lor. Din program nu a lipsit nici muzica populară. De partea tradițională a petrecerii s-au ocupat membrii și soliștii Ansamblului Folcloric Doina Covurluiului, al Centrului Cultural „Dunărea de Jos” din Galați.
