Project Title

Unit 13 – From day to night

Section 1 : Rationale (approx. 150 words) Minimum 135 Maximum 150

The storyline of this project is about a girl who is enjoying her day out shopping with her friend before it all changes that evening. The overall area of interest is how prominent in society stabbings are and how fast a day can change. I want the audience to understand the importance that tomorrow is not a guarantee that any day can go from fun and innocent to tragic in a split second. The interest for the audience will be on the flip that occurs on the change of day to night with the temperature going from bright and fun to dark and sombre. Previous to this project I have completed 12 other units that have all influenced and attributed to my skills and knowledge. With a particular appreciation to my deeper interest in the genre crime dramas.

Section 2 : Project Concept (approx. 200 words) Minimum 180 Maximum 200

The media format for this project is a short film. I aim for my project to show those you love everyday how much you appreciate them as there is no promise of them being around when tomorrow dawns. The major influencers of mine would be the creators of the BBC television show Father Brown (Various, 2013 - ) Rachel Flowerday and Tahsin Guner. I enjoy how they create mystery and intrigue. I will research the subgenre crime drama, with a particular in-depth look into short films with a focus on how scenes can flip from happy to morose. The target audience for this short film will be from the age 12 and up the main reason for the age starting at 12 would be the suggested themes of death and murder. The other audiences who will be interested in this short film will be those whose tastes are similar to the genre. The role I will be taking in this project is Director/producer. The technical requirements I will use are the standard media equipment. I would also like to use a slider so as to capture a panning shot from head downwards in a smooth motion.

Section 3 : Evaluation (approx. 150 words) Minimum 135 Maximum 150

I aim to use various mediums to use as evidence to support in my evaluation, these mediums will be Progress trackers, Production diary, peer reviews and lecturers’ comments. I will record all my changes and success’s in my production diary. The peer’s reviews and lecturers comment I will use to explore further what went well and what could be done better with an explanation of how to achieve this. Each week whilst filling out a progress tracker I will discuss what happened during that week with an explanation into what parts of the project have changed with why this was. I in conjunction with the progress tracker will complete a reflective log which will be where I detail in further depth the process of production that week with my opinion on what was successful and what will or could be changed.

Proposed Research Sources and Bibliography (Harvard Format)

This section provides an opportunity to record the initial research sources, that you intend to use.

Your sources of research should be as wide as possible and could include libraries, galleries, books, theatre, cinema visits, films, videos, magazines, tv and radio programmes, computer games, websites, blogs, social media, archive material and other media and multi-media sources.

Make sure you use the Harvard Referencing system

Project Action Plan and Timetable

This section provides you with an opportunity to outline your planning and organisation over the period of weeks and the activities you will need to carry out to complete the whole project in the agreed time frame.

The more time and thought you give to planning your project the more successful it is likely to be. It is important that you consider how you will balance ambition, time and realism in the realisation of the project.

You should also include what you are going to do, how you will do it and by when.

Remember to include time spent sourcing materials and other resources to conduct research, seek feedback from tutors and peers, and identify when you will carry out independent study.

There is an academic calendar for the production period on Facebook, and on WordPress, please refer to it for dates.

CHAPTER 1 - INTRODUCTION

In this project portfolio I am going to report on every aspect of the final extended project for my second-year UAL diploma in Creative media Film and Television. This project is a short film revolving the knife crime epidemic that currently is gripping the UK. In the short film that I have decided to title ‘….’. This first chapter of my project portfolio details all the background I have undertaken on my project, to start with I wrote about myself before moving onto what I have learnt so far on my course, l then wrote about who/what inspired me for my project. After that I wrote an explanation on my project, what it is about and why it is important, lastly will be my research plan.

The Background of my Project

This section is intended to provide a context for your project. It answers this question:

“What special factors were at work that might have influenced the conceptualisation and execution of your project?”

Here you can take some of your previous work, from earlier units, to address some of the following questions. You can use any medium (Videos, photos, audio, sketches, etc.) to answer these questions

Answer the following questions using your Project Proposal to help you, but this is an opportunity to develop your rationale in more detail.

· What is it that makes me do my project?

i.e. what motivated you to do this project? (Refer to your Who am I Task and your previous work over this academic year)

· My personal experiences that influence my choices for my project

(Your Idea for the project, your role in the project, how it relates to your future career)

· What is the basic premise of my project?

(What is the idea for the project?)

· What do I seek to achieve?

Are you trying to inform people? Entertain them? Achieve a certain skill level?

· How does my project relate to my target audience?

This can be used again for Target Audience in CHAPTER 2. Make sure this is detailed, looks at the genre of your project, think of the Uses and Gratification Theory, this is a psychographic choice, not simply an age-based profile.

Who am I?

Figure 2 Banner created using Canva.com by Danielle Bradley (photography of Myself by Myself)

When it comes to the question ‘who am i?’ I instantly think of multiple different aspects that make up ‘Danielle Bradley’. There is no simple response, I am a multifaceted being no one thing defines who I am. If I was to try defining myself I would have a list that visually would seem similar to a spider’s web in an overtly large proportion. It would look similar to a large spiders web due to all the interconnected intricate woven lines each strand as equally as important as each other.

I am multiple things; a daughter, a sister, a auntie, a niece, a granddaughter, a student, a friend, an animal lover, a film buff, Crime Drama enthusiast, music lover, fierce protector, my mother’s daughter, a photographer, a creator, mental health survivor, an optimist, a female, a Sagittarius, British and proud, Harry potter fanatic, I am all these things and much more.

As a uniquely individual person I have always strived to stick to a motto I found which reads as thus ‘Don’t be a copy, or a second Edition, be the original, be uniquely you.’ This motto has what has motivated most of my ventures in different areas of life.

During Both the first year and second year I completed a mind map where I attempted to plot down who I am below are the screenshots of these mind maps. The first screenshot being the mind map I created during the beginning of this second year with the last screenshot being completed during my first year.

Both these mind maps have considerably helped in the conception of my project idea and further into the continued progress and eventual completion of my short film ‘from day to night’.

As you can clearly see within both I have mentioned or shown examples that evidence why my project genre ‘crime drama’ was chosen.

Include a short introduction and reflect on the task and how it has helped you.

What have I learnt on my course?

On this 2 year course I have learnt a large amount about the media industry, I previously had some knowledge as I had taken media as a chosen subject in GCSE’s. Both years on thie particular course have been in-depth, I learnt a lot of skills I previously had not known or had for instance green screen, I have not before this year worked with a green screen or anything included with green screen.

Below you will see a skills timeline I completed in my first year, I have since created another timeline recently furthering on what skills I have learnt since first year, which will also appear below under first years’ timeline. I created my year 1 term 1 skills timeline using …….

Produce a Skills Timeline showing where you are now in comparison with when you first joined the course you can use examples from your portfolios and practical tasks to illustrate this. You also need to produce a Skills Focus which talks about and details the skill you are going to focus on for this project. Make sure that you cover the following points:-

· Demonstrate your achievements through proposing and realising a project (Hello and Friendship), which integrates the skills, knowledge and understanding acquired throughout the course.

You can use the work that you produced in Trimester 1, and maybe some of the elements in your production diaries for Hello and Conflict

· Write about your one-year experience on the course and what you have learned during the course.

· Compare where you were when you enrolled on the course and where you are now.

What is my project about?

Explain the subject matter for your project, and why it is important. When defining your interest and or topic and or theme, relate it to the wider world, what is happening in society, an observable event (the first line of the example is on observable event)

Also detail what your main role in the project is going to be.

For example: -

Today more and more teenagers are completing their education without real prospect to find a job which will pay bills and offer a decent start in life. Facing the challenge of not being employed and having to pay the bills, Maria a 23-year-old veterinary nurse has decided to look for alternative ways of earning money. The film I have created for my FEP is a story about Maria’s struggle to earn money to pay the rent and not be evicted from her home by the landlord who gave her 24 hours’ notice to find the money. Faced with the deadline and not heaving job or someone to borrow the money, Maria in desperation turns to crime. She decided to rob the local shop.

My role in this project is Writer/Producer and Film Director.

Why is my project important?

Describe this in general sense as a statement of why you wanted to do the project. For example, as a desire to understand something, to entertain, inform, educate, to develop skills and knowledge in given media industry context, etc. This has been covered in the question above and on your project proposal. Don’t worry about the repetition, you need it here, as well as in your proposal.

CHAPTER 2 - LITERATURE AND MEDIA PRODUCT REVIEWS

Introduction

In this chapter I am going to produce a literature review, two practitioner’s reports and a media review. In my research for each report a wide variety of sources will be quoted to show how I used the research as well as interpreted it. The research I undertake will be of a wide range of literature sources, some books, films, web sites, television reports and more that all helped shape and influence my project.

In the literature review I will specifically look at …..

In my media review I will report on the ……

I chose ….. And …. For my practitioners reports =, I chose them because.

Literature Review

Figure 3 Banner created using Canva.com by Danielle Bradley

Examine and explore existing media products, practices and ideas in spirit of creativity and imagination

A Literature Review starts with your research question – What are you trying to find out? Once you have your research questions, you can start. A Literature Review enables you to gather information, knowledge ideas etc from existing media sources, such as books, articles, journals, podcasts, web sites, documentaries etc. As you gather this information, it will either support your original research question, or provide you with new areas to research, or even make you consider an alteration in your research plan, and a change to your research questions. As you read and analyse the different source material, you will start to synthesis (Look at the Literature Review PowerPoint to remind you of what that is) the information you are acquiring. Your analysis and synthesis is what you detail in your Literature Review. It allows you to clearly and academically demonstrate that you have researched and analysed the existing sources relevant to your media product.

Media Product Review

In this section you need to examine and explore existing media products, media practices and ideas in the spirit of creativity and imagination. Identify different media projects related to your media project. Record and analyse findings.

· What are similar media products and how is your work related to them?

(consider yourself and your project in relation to similar media products)

· How have similar media products influenced my project?

· How have they shaped my project?

· What did I learn from similar media products? (compare similar media products, how it influenced your perspective and ideas for the project)

· How does this media review inform your knowledge of your Target Audience?

Practitioners Report

You need to produce TWO Practioners Reports. This is a combined literature and media review, that focus’ on a key practitioner who is either relevant to your subject, your skill, or simply has been very influential on your creative decision making that has informed your choice of media project.

As for all research you need a research question, are you going to produce a bibliography for them, detailing where they started, and following their career, chronologically through to current day? Or you could focus on their motivation behind the production of a key film. Or you could look at their filmography and structure a report around that.

Requirements for my Creative Media Production Project

In this section, you should present your findings of the media industry and jobs related to your media project.

· Demonstrate the requirements of the media industry relevant to your project –

organizational structures, roles and processes. Look at the work you did in Unit 3

· Detailed job analysis – core skills and abilities required for my project

· Detail the equipment and technology relevant to the project and chosen media

· Health and Safety – once you have completed the Risk Assessment in Chapter 5 post it here.

· Detailed Analysis of Target Audiences -refer to the work you have undertaken in your media review above, and in the work, you do on your target audience in Chapter 3.

· Legal and ethical requirements that are applicable to your project

· Legal – what laws apply to your project e.g. Copyright, Health and Safety Laws

· Ethical – the main issue here is representation. Who and or what are you representing in your project? Are you making that representation ethical?

· Detail the following for your project

· Form – the form is a film, or a script, or photography

· Genre – I do not need to explain this!

· Style – linked to genre, but a little more specific. So, if your genre is thriller, then your style could be urban, or retro, or fantasy

· Design – once you have your genre and your style you must design it. If it is a thriller in a retro style, you need to say what retro? Are we talking 1970’s? 1950’s? same style but different design.

· Detail the Skills and or Techniques needed for your project

This should then tie in with Chapter 3 where you detail the experimentation and exploration that you have undertaken. If one of your skills needed is sound design and therefore one of the techniques needed is Foley sound, as you are going to do a detail sound design for your scene then in chapter 3, you need to have Foley experimentation and possibly also exploration of your sound design plan.

Conclusion

Answer the following questions: -

· Who or what was my inspiration for my project?

Refer to Chapter 1, and your “Who am I?” task to help you answer these questions.

· Contextualisation of my study

This is, “What was your motivation to do your project?” Refer to Chapter 1 and your Project Proposal to help you answer these questions.

CHAPTER 3 - RESEARCH, EXPERIMENTATION AND EXPLORATION

Introduction

Within this chapter I will detail all the avenues I undertook research wise in regards to my extended project, I will also include an explanation on avenues such as experimentation and exploration I completed all of which contributed to the outlook on my finished project.

(I started my research by ‘googling’ Knife crime with a particular in-depth look into small town knife crime. )

This chapter is the ‘How-to’ section for the original research element of your Extended Project. In this chapter you must introduce and explain the design of your research and experimentation activities and how your information/data was collected. Remember, in this chapter, you will only write about your original research and what research activities and methods you used. In Chapter 4, you will write about your findings, analysis and conclusions. Secondary research about your subject is in Chapter 2.

Examples of the original research activities you may have conducted are: -

Experimentation and Skills Workshops i.e. sound, filming, editing, lighting

Exploration and photography i.e. Focus groups, Observations, Character profiles

Visual and Audio surveys

Interviews

Museum or Gallery visits

Content research

Production research i.e.. Locations, props, costumes, scenery etc.

Research Design

Start with stating the intent of your Extended Project What are you trying to achieve with this project?

Write about your overall research aim. Ask yourself: “What do I want to find out?” You have to base your research design on your research questions and your research Plan

Research Questions

Write clear research questions, detailing what you wanted to find out and why

Each piece of resarch needs to have a question, before you can start. The research activity should be supportive and relevant to the type of information you are trying to find out. The questions need to cover the three key areas of original research, as detailed below:-

Target Audience Research

Ask yourself these questions:

· Who is your target audience? Who are you aiming your product at? Use the work you carried out in Chapter 2. Remember the genre is key, as is psychographics.

· What type of audience is it?

Investigate the target demographic and record the type of media or entertainment they consume.

· Where can you find this out? You can use, ‘YouGov Profiles’ site to find out about your target audience demographic. (secondary)

· You can set up interviews or record a ‘Vox Pops’ (primary) to find information about your audience.

·

Skills and Techniques Research

This has already been touched on in Chapter 2, make sure they correspond. This is your experimentation and exploration of what is needed to produce your product. Plan what skills and techniques you will need to experiment with to produce an effective, original and to near professional standard project. You would have a minimum of four areas for experimentation

· Filming

· Lighting

· Sound

· Editing

For your exploration, you would need to consider

· character design, location design, styling etc.

Production Research

· People needed for the production/availability

· Research production roles that you will need to carry out and how to do it successfully

· Production schedule

· Budget

· Recce research/location needed

· Health and safety research

· Visual ideas - mood board

· Props

· Actors

· Costumes - for example

Exploration of suitable costumes for my main female character, The girl next door who maybe a killer. My research question is What is the most suitable costume for a female character, who appears “normal” but maybe a killer? I want to find out from the audience, via the means of a focus group, which costume they think appears normal, but had just a touch of the unknown, the unusual about it.

I sourced three different costumes that my actor was comfortable wearing. I took pictures of these costumes in my main location.

Picture 1

Picture 2

Picture 3

Conclusion

List all research activities

Review the original research that you undertook to answer your research questions. Discuss the information that you discovered and relate that to your media product.

CHAPTER 4 – PRESENTATION AND ANALYSIS OF RESEARCH FINDINGS

Introduction

This chapter is where I will write down all the details of the results gathered via the research that was undertaken. I will explain further how each result contributed to the final look of my short film. As a refresh my extended project is a short film based on the current knife crime epidemic currently prevalent in society, with a particular look into the direct result of knife crime on the victim themselves as well as their close friends/family this will all be told in a dramatized fashion.

Explain the object of each question, research activity, point out results, and present those results in a chosen form of summarised information/data.

Research Analysis

What did you learn from your research and how did it inform your project?

Review each different piece of research undertaken from both Chapter 2 and Chapter 3. Remember you have already detailed each piece of research in their relevant chapter. You are now looking at what information it produced, what did it tell you and how do you think it would help your end project; - for exampleCostume Exploration Research I undertook some exploration of the most suitable costume for my main character. Using three pictures (page 18 in Chapter 3) I showed them to my focus group, which was made up of 6 people, split equally by gender and representative of the age of my Target Audience. I cropped the head out of the picture, so it was just the clothes, not the facial expression. The Focus Group felt that Picture 3, felt more sexualised because of the shorts. Picture 1 was excluded because the scarf could be a weapon and therefore it was Picture 2. Everyone agreed that this was the most neutral image, therefore leaving the acting and directing to show the killer in her! This research has clearly shown that I need to choose clothes for my main character that are as neutral and “plain” as possible.

Explain and contextualize findings

· Provide background and context of the work (refer to work produced in Chapter 1)

· What is it that makes me do my project?

· My personal experiences that influence my choices (my role in the project, how it relates to my future possible career)

Organise and express your ideas (ideas from week 2, your Project Ideas PowerPoint.

(YOUR PROJECT PROPOSAL POWERPOINT FROM WEEK 2 NEEDS TO GO HERE)

· Originate a range of ideas and analyse each idea for viability

List the ideas you had and explain why the chosen idea was picked and the secondary. Show your ideas Mind Mapping, include a SWOT Analysis

Conclusion

· How did the research help with my project?

· How are you going to use the research you produced?

· What do you think was the most relevant piece of research? And why?

CHAPTER 5 – PRODUCTION FOR MEDIA PRODUCT

Introduction

In this chapter you should present the level of self-direction, personal initiative and commitment necessary to progress ideas and find solutions, and the practical, theoretical and technical comprehension, appreciation, knowledge and proficiency necessary to achieve identified goals. The ability to plan and organise work within a given timeframe and the efficient production of outcomes both individually and collaboratively.

Pre-Production

· Pitch your Project Proposal to the Production Board

(PLACE YOUR POWERPOINT AND THE VIDEO RECORDING OF YOUR PRODUCTION BOARD PRESENTATION HERE)

· Produce Pre-Production Paperwork

This will formally define your project: Location Survey; Risk Assessment; Treatment; Script; Budget; Schedule, Character Bibles, Design Documents Etc

· Identify and detail the roles you will be undertaking, and the roles for other people

Directing (Managing the Team) Crew, Actors, Foley Artist, Sound Design, Camera, Lighting, Sound, editing (Refer to Chapter 2 and use and build on the work detailed there)

· Collaborating and working as a team

You will have other people in your team, you need to detail how you plan to work together to ensure that the production is a successful i.e. regular team meetings, group setup on What’s App etc

· Dealing with possible production problems

You may have delays, equipment breakdowns, changes in schedule, etc you need to detail how you are going to resolve them

· Analyse your target audience.

Investigate the target demographic and record the type of media or entertainment they consume, (Use the work you produced for Chapter 2 to answer these questions)

Production

· Management techniques

Notes of team meetings and daily diary reflections , production and post-production schedules; call sheets, etc.

· Team and individual performance monitoring

Weekly check against schedule as detailed in your Production Schedule

· Production Tracking – Production Diary

To demonstrate progress and development of your project (photos from the shoot, screenshots from computers). You will keep Production Diary where you will detail daily production and post-production diary and reflect on your production process.

· Feedback from Lecturers and Peers and Social Media

Detailed in your Production Diary

Post-production

· Prepare material for edit and further manipulation

· Editing

(remember to take regular screen grabs)

· Preparing credits (see below)

· Fine tuning special effects, mixing, colour correction, rendering, compressing

(remember to take regular screen grabs)

· QA Testing

(remember to write up feedback in your Production Diary)

· Critique of visual art by peers, Lecturers, Social Media

(remember to write up feedback in your Production Diary)

· in your Production Diary

Detail post-production of your project using screen grabs etc

· Assess your production and post-production process.

In your Production Diary describe, and critically analyse any production problems and the solutions you used to resolve them.

Presentation

In this part of chapter, you should demonstrate ability to be able to present a creative media production project to a specified audience. Your EXTENDED PROJECT must be presented appropriately (effectively; imaginatively) and presented with suitable (relevant; purposeful) media conventions to suit the target audience.

You have been given the showcase of the Summer Shows (see calendar for dates). You need to explore the different strategies needed to present your Extended Project.

Your presentation will very much depend on the medium of your Extended Project. In the Summer Shows, there will be the possibility to screen your films, exhibit your photos, or display your scripts and Pre-production Planning Documents. You need to:-

· Decide what medium is most relevant for your project and target audience, and detail why you think it is the most relevant approach.

· Design your presentation, paying attention to your target audience. If you are producing a horror video, a screening at 3pm in the main street is not appropriate. You need to detail and plan all elements of your presentation, from the physical exhibition space to the supporting promotional material and supporting paperwork such as a programme.

· Write about what influenced your decision to present your work in a certain way. You should look at other events which have showcased productions similar to yours, such as Trailers, Art Galleries, and Festivals.

CHAPTER 6 – FINALISED MEDIA PRODUCT

Present your finished practical project here, make sure that you include your Production Diaries.

CHAPTER 7 - PROJECT EVALUATION

Critically evaluating your final media project against the agreed requirements and parameters.

Answer the following questions:

· Introduce the project in your own words

· What was the purpose of the project?

· What did you hope to learn?

· How much reference material did you find?

· Do you think you could have done more? If so, explain what you think you could have done

· How did you develop your ideas?

· List five strengths and five weaknesses in your final design

· Was there a theme for the design ideas?

· Can you describe it?

· Can you reference any influences here? - art movements, designers, media companies/campaigns, etc.

· What experiments and exploration did you do?

· How did it affect your development?

· Find a similar type of design publication - place it next to your own - what comparisons/difference can you identify?

· What were the key areas of development in this project? - use your daily reflections to help you with this

· Which technical skills, processes, methods and techniques did you use?

· Review your proposal - what changed, what developments did you make, did you manage to complete everything you set out to achieve?

· What did the client/lecturer think of your original concept/idea?

· How did that make you feel?

· What could you do to adapt the work produced to improve and develop it?

· Is the final work appropriate for the needs of the project?

· Does it sufficiently answer your brief? (Project Proposal)

· Reflect on your pitch to the board; how did you feel about it before?

· Did the pitch go better or worse than you expected?

· What was the feedback from the client/lecturer about your pitch?

· What do you think you could improve next time when doing a pitch?

· Did the project as a whole, go better or worse than you expected?

· What was the feedback from the client/lecturer on the project as a whole?
