DANDY MAN INCOMMAND AT GOFFS
By Emma Berry
There was a palpable feel of spring in the air at Goffs on
Wednesday and it wasn't only the weather that received a boost
as prices also picked up slightly as the yearling section of the
February Sale came to a close.
A marginally improved second-day clearance rate saw 122 of
202, or 60%, of yearlings sold, bringing an aggregate of
i1,392,000 at an average of i11,410 and median of i5,500.
An extra half-session of short yearlings compared to last year's
sale saw the turnover as a whole for this section rise by 8% to
i2,118,500 for 199 sold from 335 offered, but there were
reductions in the average and median figures, the former falling
by 23% to i10,646, and the median was down by 31% to
i5,500.
The most expensive youngster of the week hailed from the
draft of Collegelands Stud and buyer Peter Doyle was full of
praise for the colt and his consignor after he signed the ticket at
i86,000 for lot 260. Doyle said, "He comes from a farm that
always has nice foals here. He's been very well prepared and he
was a stand-out today but in any sale he would have been a very
nice horse."

INGLIS RIVERSIDE TO OPEN NEXT YEAR The 2017 sales season will be the last for Inglis at its
Newmarket complex in Sydney, with the company=s Riverside
Stables complex adjacent to Warwick Farm Racecourse set to be
completed in December. The last sale at Newmarket will be the
Australian Broodmare and Weanling Sale Apr. 10 to 12, and the
first sale at Riverside will be next year=s Classic Yearling Sale in
early February.
AAfter years of planning, the time has come to relocate our
Sydney business to its new home, a truly world-class sales and
events facility at Warwick Farm,@ Inglis Managing Director Mark
Webster said. "The Riverside Stables complex is a massive
investment by Inglis, and has been created to service the
Thoroughbred racing and breeding industry for the next 100
years.@ The Warwick Farm precinct, which is 25 minutes from
Sydney International Airport, will include a luxury hotel named
The William Inglis adjoining the sales arena. Cont. p5

Dandy Man In Command At Goffs Cont. from p1
The April-born colt is the first foal of the Indian Ridge (GB)
mare Sharki (GB), a half-sister to the eight-time winner and
black-type performer Johannes (Ire) (Mozart {Ire}), and was one
of four short yearlings consigned by Collegelands.
Marking a successful consigning debut for Mick O'Dwyer's
Cashel Bloodstock was lot 305, a colt by the ever-popular Kodiac
(Ire), who sold for i72,000 to Tally-Ho Stud. Another first foal,
the colt's dam Tiz All Over (Tiznow) ran just once but she is a
member of a particularly well-credentialed family, being a
grand-daughter of Grade II winner Better Than Honour (Deputy
Minister), the dam of GI Belmont S. winners Rags To Riches (A P
Indy) and Jazil (Seeking The Gold), as well as GII Peter Pan S.
winner Casino Drive (Mineshaft) and Breeders' Cup Marathon
winner Man Of Iron (Giant's Causeway).
Known affectionately by his many friends on the sales circuit
as 'Mad Mick', O'Dwyer, a native of Cashel, is more usually seen
as a key member of the Baroda & Colbinstown Studs sales teams
in Britain and Ireland, and he also works for Lady O'Reilly's Haras
de la Louiviere. He said, "Michael Daly was kind enough to ask
me if I'd sell some horses for him and I said I'd help him out.
Hopefully there will be a future in it but I'm not giving up the
work for Baroda & Colbinstown. I also love working for Lady
O'Reilly in France--she loves her horses and loves her staff."

O'Dwyer, who was assisted at Goffs by Laura Vittecoq of Prime
Equestrian, continued, "I've been working at the sales for 20
years now. I started off with Taylor Made and the first horse I
led through the ring was Mariah's Storm carrying Giant's
Causeway. I'm having a great first time on my own and I have
another nice Kodiac filly to sell later who could be the next Tiggy
Wiggy."
Agent Troy Steve will be hoping that O'Dwyer's assessment of
lot 476 is accurate as he subsequently bought the Kodiac filly--a
half-sister to Russian group winner Green Bush (Ire) (Bushranger
{Ire})--for i52,000 on behalf of Cambridge-based pinhooking
outfit Piermill Bloodstock. In total, Cashel Bloodstock sold six of
the seven short yearlings in its draft, with three by Kodiac
featuring among the top six lots of the day.
The sole short yearling by Darley's Derby winner New
Approach (Ire) in the sale was another of the picks of the day,
with lot 399 selling for i60,000 to Richard Fitzsimmons of BBA
Ireland. Consigned by Airlie Stud for the Niarchos Family, the
colt is out of City On Sea (Ire) (Monsun {Ger}), a winning
half-sister to GI Breeders' Cup Mile winner Domedriver (Ire)
(Indian Ridge {GB}). Fitzsimmons confirmed that the colt was
bought for a new, unnamed client and will be returned to the
sales-ring in the autumn.
Options are open for Rathbarry Stud's Acclamation (GB) colt
out of 3-year-old winner Always The Lady (GB) (Halling) after lot
345 sold for i56,000 to Spanish agent Rafael Rojano of Stamina
Turf.

"He's been bought for a Spanish partnership and he may go to
France to race, though he could be resold later this year. I will
talk to the partners and we'll make a decision for him later on,"
said Rojano.
Goffs springs back into action at 10 a.m. on Thursday with a

FRANKEL BROTHER RETIRED TO STUD Proconsul (GB) (Galileo {Ire}--Kind {Ire}, by Danehill), a
4-year-old full-brother to Frankel (GB), will stand his first season
at Richard Kent's Mickley Stud in Shropshire in 2017.
In a deal brokered by Huntingdon/Norris, the chestnut stallion
becomes the fifth son of Juddmonte's blue hen Kind to gain a
berth at stud. Another full-brother, the treble Group 1 winner
Noble Mission (GB), was recruited to Lane's End Farm in
Kentucky, while
half-brother
Bullet Train (GB)
(Sadler's Wells) is
also in America at
Crestwood Farm
and Morpheus
(GB) (Oasis
Dream {GB})
stands at Tally-Ho
Stud in Ireland.
"We're
delighted to be
standing Proconsul at Mickley Stud and we look forward to
welcoming breeders to see him," said Richard Kent. "He's a
fine-looking colt and obviously his pedigree speaks for itself."
He added, "It's always been a pleasure doing business with
Juddmonte and it is encouraging that they have retained a
number of breeding rights in Proconsul. We bought Multiplex
from Juddmonte eight years ago and he has been a grand
servant to Mickley Stud and to our many clients. It was sad to
say goodbye to him this week as he left us for stud in Bahrain
but we're sure that Proconsul will prove to be a worthy
replacement."
Proconsul, who ran twice in France for Andre Fabre, joins
Heeraat (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}), Captain Gerrard (GB) (Oasis
Dream {GB}) and Shamardal's brother Yorgunnabelucky (Giant's
Causeway) on the roster at Mickley, where he will stand for a
fee of ,3,500 (Live Foal, Oct. 1).

ASHADIHAN (GB) (f, 4, Kyllachy {GB}--Miss Delila, by Malibu
Moon) garnered last term=s G3 Chartwell Fillies= S. at Lingfield
and ran fifth in Newmarket=s July 8 G1 Falmouth S., and went
postward as the 11-4 second favourite for this seasonal return
coming off an unplaced effort in the Sept. 23 Listed Rosemary S.
at Newmarket=s Rowley Mile track. Occupying a handy third
through the early strides, she was sent to the fore approaching
the final eighth and kept on well under a late drive to prevail by
1 1/2 lengths from Volunteer Point (Ire) (Footstepsinthesand
{GB}). AIt was a very good performance from Ashadihan,@
commented trainer Kevin Ryan. AThey went a good gallop, she
traveled strongly and quickened up well. She has obviously
qualified for [All-Weather Championships Finals Day on] Good
Friday [Apr. 14] and I will have to speak to [owner] Mr Rahman.
We will see how she comes out of the race and discuss it over
the next few days. She is a very, very big filly and, even last
season, she was still learning and was a bit immature. She has
grown into a big, strong filly now and it is great to have her in
training again this year.@ The winner is the sole stakes scorer,
from six runners, out of Miss Delila (Malibu Moon), herself a
half-sister to G2 Cherry Hinton S. victress Sander Camillo (Dixie

"Newmarket has been a wonderful home for our company and

here at Inglis look forward to celebrating those memories over

AOur final year at Newmarket also coincides with our 150th

number of events in the coming months to celebrate all that is
old and new, including a farewell party at Newmarket for our
customers on the eve of the Australian Broodmare and

employees of the company later in the year. I encourage
everyone to join in the celebrations and enjoy the remaining
three months of sales at Newmarket. If you haven=t been to

EURO TRIP ON THE CARDS FOR JAMEKA Last year=s G1 Caulfield Cup winner Jameka (Aus)
(Myboycharlie {Ire}), who makes her autumn debut in Saturday=s
G1 CF Orr S. at Caulfield, could have an extended Northern
Hemisphere summer campaign in Europe, trainer Ciaron Maher
told Racing.com. Maher said the mare=s main target would be
the G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth S. at Ascot in July,
with Royal Ascot and the G1 Prix de l=Arc de Triomphe also
possible.
"We've looked into racing at Royal Ascot, trying to have her
right for the King George," Maher told Racing.com. "There's a
vast range of races over there [in Europe] in her best-distance
range. The Arc's at Chantilly, but whether she's up to that or not,
we'll have to see how her form is, and whether she even goes or
not. She may even stay here for the spring, and maybe the [G1]
Vase in Hong Kong, so there's plenty of options for her."
But first up for Jameka is an Australian autumn campaign that
is expected to include the Orr, the G2 Peter Young S. and G1
Australian Cup in Melbourne before a trip to Sydney for the G1
The BMW or G1 Queen Elizabeth S., and Maher said the 4-year-
old would have to be at her best to travel overseas.
"[Travel] is something we've always wanted to do,@ he noted.
AThe connections are on board. Everything would have to be
right to take her. You want to go over there to be competitive;
you don't just want to go over there just to compete."
WINX DRAWS THREE FOR RETURN Winx (Aus) (Street Cry {Ire}), the world=s highest-rated mare
and turf horse of 2016, makes her seasonal debut in Randwick=s
1400 metre G2 The Star Apollo S. on Saturday. The 5-year-old,
who drew barrier three in a scratched-down field of 12, seeks
her 14th consecutive win. She was last seen defending her G1
Cox Plate title in spectacular fashion on Oct. 22. Winx won last
year=s Apollo en route to victories in the G1 Chipping Norton S.,
G1 George Ryder S. and G1 Doncaster Mile later in the season.
She is currently the heavy $1.12 favourite with Sportsbet, with
her main opposition expected to come from Godophin=s
Hartnell (GB) (Authorized {Ire}). The 5-year-old gelding had to
settle for the runner-up spot behind Winx twice last season,
including the Cox Plate and, in addition to collecting the G1
Turnbull S., G2 Hill S. and G2 Chelmsford S. in facile manner,
Hartnell was third in the G1 Melbourne Cup when last seen
publicly. He finished sixth of nine in a Randwick barrier trial on

AHe=s come back in great shape; I couldn=t be happier with his

him. His trial was what we wanted; he=s come along nicely since
then. From here he goes to the Chipping Norton in two weeks
and then the Ranvet and the Queen Elizabeth.@
Winx=s trainer Chris Waller has five entered, also including
Qatar Bloodstock=s Endless Drama (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}),
who makes just his second start Down Under after finishing last

Thursday when he saddles Really Special (GB) (Shamardal) and
Voice Of Truth (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}).
Really Special, winner of the Listed Montrose Fillies= S. over a
mile at Newmarket in October, lived up to her name when
extending her unbeaten record to three with a 3 1/4-length win
in her dirt debut in Meydan=s 1400 metre 1000 Guineas trial on
Jan. 19. AReally Special has won all three of her career starts and
is a filly we really like,@ said Bin Suroor. AThe extra 200 metres
will suit her as she won a 1600 metre listed race at Newmarket
in October and we think she has a massive chance.@
Trial second Complimenti (Congrats) reopposes for trainer
Doug Watson, who won this last year with the ultra-impressive
Polar River by the same sire. Unlike that stable companion,
however, who was a >TDN Rising Star= after breaking her maiden
on debut at Meydan and went into this unbeaten, Complimenti
seeks her first win in her third outing. Cont. p9

NEW DIAGNOSIS FORCLASSIC EMPIRE,
FOUNTAIN OF YOUTHCOULD BE NEXT
by Bill Finley
After originally concluding that Classic Empire (Pioneerof the
Nile) ran poorly in Saturday=s GII Lambholm South Holy Bull S.
because he did not handle the trip from Palm Meadows to
Gulfstream, trainer Mark Casse has found a new explanation for
the Eclipse Award-winning colt=s subpar performance.
It took a few days, but Casse discovered a significant problem
with the colt=s right front foot and is now certain that=s why he
ran a distant third as the heavy favorite in the race.
AWe were shocked by the way he acted on Saturday,@ Casse
said. AHe=s probably one of the smartest horses I=ve ever trained.
He never lets things bother him, but he was a mess. When he
came into the paddock, I was shocked how he was acting. On
Sunday morning, I was there with him and he was perfect. Got
him out and jogged him and he was happy. By Monday morning
he was getting around, but he wasn=t good. We did some tests
which showed the problem was with his right front foot. By
Monday afternoon, he could not walk. He couldn=t get around
the shedrow. We started soaking his foot, we X-rayed his foot.
The X-ray of the foot was fine. [Wednesday] morning he had a
huge puss pocket bust out of the bulb of his foot. He=s now a
happy camper and moving around fine.@ Cont. p3
WILKES HAS AMPLE EXPERIENCE TO CALL
UPON WITH MCCRAKEN by Ben Massam
In January 2011, trainer Ian Wilkes entered Janis Whitham=s
homebred mare Ivory Empress (Seeking the Gold) in what would
be the final start of her career in the six-furlong Minaret S. at
Tampa Bay Downs. The versatile dark bay had reached the
winner=s circle three times from 19 previous tries, gradually
climbing through her allowance conditions with wins on the
Churchill Downs dirt, the Arlington synthetic and Keeneland=s
turf course. Ivory Empress had knocked on the door of stakes
success in 2010, including a fast-closing runner-up finish in
Delaware Park=s GIII Endine S., and Wilkes was hopeful that she
could break through with a black-type win.

WAR CRY OWNER A LINK TO GLORY DAYS 6
Irish War Cry (Curlin)’s victory in last Saturday’s GII Lambholm South Holy Bull S. provided a moment in the sun for the strugglingNew Jersey breeding industry. Bill Finley talks to the colt’s owner, who provides a link to the state’s rich racing history.

Paul Pompa’s Grade I winner Connect (Curlin) will take up studduties at Lane’s End Farm at the conclusion of his racing career."He's by an emerging top-class sire that's one of the most commercially sought after stallions in the market," said Lane’s End’s Will Farish.

New Diagnosis for Classic Empire (cont. from p1)
AWe feel some relief because we knew something was up and
we just couldn=t pinpoint it,@ Casse continued. AI=m guessing this
had been brewing but not enough for us to catch it before the
race. It=s one thing to be sound at a jog or a gallop, another thing
when you=re being asked to run at 40 miles per hour. Now, we
have an explanation for what is going on.@
No longer concerned that the ship to
Gulfstream was a factor, Casse said he
is seriously considering the Mar. 4
GII Fountain of Youth S.
AWe didn=t see the real Classic Empire
and that was obvious,@ the trainer said.
AAll the numbers don=t lie. Now racing
at Gulfstream isn=t out of the question,
but we would do things differently. We
have a division at Gulfstream, so we=d
probably move him down there a little
sooner and let him breeze there and we
would do some schooling with him.@
Casse said that the Fountain of Youth
will most likely be the next start for
Classic Empire, but added that shipping him to California to prep
for the GI Kentucky Derby is another option.
A[Owner] Mr. [John] Oxley and I were talking about going to
California with him before any of this occurred,@ he said. AHe
won the [GI] Breeders= Cup Juvenile there, so we know he likes
Santa Anita. It will be one of those two things, California or the
Fountain of Youth, but the Fountain of Youth is our number one
choice.@
There has also been a development with another of Casse=s
stars as he reported that Tepin (Bernstein) is doing fine after a
minor bout of colic, one that has cost
her a start this weekend in the
GIII Lambholm South Endeavour S. at
Tampa Bay Downs. Casse said now that
she has recovered, he will point her
toward a race against males, the Mar. 4
GIII Canadian Turf at Gulfstream.
Casse had hoped to kick off Tepin=s
6-year-old season Saturday at Tampa,
but had a change of heart when he
could see that she was not acting like
her usual self.
AShe does that every now and then,@
Casse said. AIt wasn=t a big deal, just bad
timing. I was already feeling uncomfortable about this race
because she missed a work because of weather.@ Cont. p4

Casse continued, ARight now, and this would have to be
confirmed by [owner] Mr. [Bob] Masterson, we=re looking very
seriously at the Canadian against colts. I like the timing and she=s
one for one at Gulfstream. She=s fine. She trained this morning.
She just was acting very weird on Sunday morning. Usually, she=s
at the front of the stall and happy. She wasn=t. She was over in a
corner and sulking and shifting her legs back and forth like she
was unhappy. Sure enough, she had some gas. At that point, I
just wasn=t going to push things.@
Casse had originally hoped to send Tepin to Dubai, but he said
a trip to the Middle East is now unlikely because of the change
in her U.S. racing schedule.
Wilkes Has Ample Experience to Call Upon
with McCraken (cont. from p1)
It wasn=t meant to be, as Ivory Empress crossed the wire a
non-threatening sixth for the second consecutive race. She was
subsequently retired and sent to the breeding shed for
Whitham, whose homebred operation has produced the likes of
Wilkes-trained 2012 GI Breeders= Cup Classic winner Fort Larned
(E Dubai) and four-time Grade I winner Affluent (Affirmed).
AShe could run both on turf and dirt, she was stakes-placed,@
Wilkes recalled of Ivory Empress. AWe just couldn't get a stakes
win out of her. She was a super-talented filly, but we just
couldn't get her there.@
Six years later,
Ivory Empress has
more than delivered
on her talent as a
broodmare,
producing
undefeated >TDN

McCraken
(Ghostzapper), as
well as the

4-year-old Bondurant (War Front). Wilkes will bring both half-

Ian Wilkes | Coady photo
McCraken wins the Kentucky Jockey Club
Coady photo
Equipped with extensive knowledge of McCraken=s family as
he heads down the road to the GI Kentucky Derby, the Aussie
trainer is also entering familiar territory from his days as an
assistant to Hall of
Famer Carl Nafzger.
Wilkes was an
important member of
Nafzger=s team for
champion Unbridled=s
1990 Derby triumph,
as well as Street
Sense=s 2007 score.
Not coincidentally, the
latter began his 3-year-
old season with a win
in the GIII Tampa Bay
Derby.
AI=ve been fortunate,
being with Carl
through Unbridled,
Vicar and Street
Sense,@ Wilkes said. AYou watch, you learn, and being there with
Carl, the main thing is to enjoy it. >Just worry about your own
horse,= that=s the main thing he=s always told me.@
True to Nafzger=s advice, Wilkes is only worried about his own
horse in the Sam F. Davis. While nobody would blame the
trainer for feeling a bit of pressure saddling an unbeaten
Kentucky Derby
contender in his
3-year-old debut,
he said that
decisions are being
made with the First
Saturday in May in
mind. Given that
McCraken=s three
victories have all
come at Churchill
Downs, getting the
colt into the
starting gate in peak form is his top priority.
AThe horse doesn=t have to win [Saturday],@ Wilkes explained.
AMy goal is not this race. I think he=ll run well, but as long as I get
a good race and see improvement, my goal is the Kentucky
Derby. That=s the key, but I think he=ll run well. This horse gives
you confidence.@

Surely, some of that confidence comes from McCraken=s
unblemished record, which also included a win in Churchill=s
one-mile Street Sense S., defeating subsequent GIII LeComte S.
winner Guest Suite (Quality Road) in the process. But Wilkes
noted that he is also impressed by what he=s seen from the bay
in the mornings at Palm Meadows Training Center. Sent
southward following his victory in the Kentucky Jockey Club,
McCraken has posted nine workouts leading up to Saturday=s
race.
AI think he=s gotten bigger, I think he=s gotten stronger,@ Wilkes
observed. AI=m very pleased with the way he=s been training.@
As for Bondurant, the turfer enters the Tampa Bay S. off a
narrowly beaten runner-up finish in the GIII Commonwealth Turf
S. at Churchill, and could be poised for a fruitful 2017 campaign
after winning three times from his first six starts. Given her
ability to win over any surface, it is no surprise that Ivory
Empress is responsible for a pair of runners with such different
profiles.
AThose two are very different horses,@ Wilkes offered when
asked to compare the siblings. ATalent is the only similarity. If
McCraken keeps running like he does on the dirt, he=ll never see
the grass.@
>WAR CRY= OWNER A LINK TO JERSEY
RACING'S GLORY DAYS By Bill Finley
The New Jersey breeding industry, which is in sharp decline,
hasn't had much to cheer about for a long time, but that wasn't
the case Saturday at Gulfstream as not only did a Jersey-bred
win the GII Lambholm Holy Bull S., but the owner and breeder of
>TDN Rising Star= Irish War Cry (Curlin) is racing royalty in the
Garden State.
Since she no longer goes by her birth name, Isabelle de
Tomaso's connection to the history of Monmouth Park and New
Jersey racing is often overlooked. De Tomaso, 86, is the
daughter of Amory L. Haskell, the first president and chairman
of the Monmouth Park Jockey Club and the person for whom
the GI Haskell Invitational is named after (Note that fellow
>Rising Star= and leading GI Kentucky Derby contender McCraken
{Ghostzapper} is owned by 83-year-old Janis Whitham.)
Though de Tomaso, who grew up in Red Bank, no longer lives
in New Jersey (she splits her time between Italy and Palm Beach,
Florida) she has stayed loyal to the New Jersey breeding
program. Along with her sister, Hope Jones, she is among the
last breeders with any degree of prominence or quality mares to
do so. Cont. p7

Irish War Cry | A Coglianese
AAs you know, my father founded Monmouth Park and I
always lived in New Jersey growing up,@ she said. AI don't live
there anymore, but my sister and I will come back and visit in
the summers. We want Jersey-breds, and we certainly hope that
things will get better there soon.@
That doesn't seem likely. New Jersey racing is reeling because
it is the only state up and down the East Coast that does not
benefit from casino gambling. All that's left is about 70 days of
racing, the bulk at Monmouth, plus a short turf only meet at the
Meadowlands. With so few opportunities for New Jersey-breds
to run in state-bred competition, it's hard to justify breeding in
the state.
AWith the type of mares they have, the runners they've
produced and the stallions they go to, Mrs. Jones and Mrs. de
Tomaso could foal those horses anywhere and be competitive,@
said Mike Campbell, the executive director of the New Jersey
Thoroughbred Breeders' Association. AThe fact that they stayed
so loyal to New Jersey is admirable.@
There were 115 foals born in New Jersey in 2014, the year of
Irish War Cry's birth. Campbell estimates that between 1,200
and 1,400 foals were born annually in the state in the
mid-1980's. In 2015, the last year for which figures are available
through The Jockey Club, only 45 mares were bred in the state,
just 1% of all the mares bred in North America.
With New Jersey at such a disadvantage against states like
Maryland, Pennsylvania and New York, Campbell doesn't expect
Irish War Cry's success to have people flocking back to the Jersey
breeding industry. But he hopes that this horse's presence in the
spotlight could have ancillary benefits. In Pennsylvania, the
popularity and success of Smarty Jones (Elusive Quality) is
widely credited for getting that state's politicians to push for
casinos at the racetracks there.
AThis horse is causing a lot of excitement and we've gotten a
lot of phone calls at the
office from different people
talking about how wonderful
it is that the horse is
undefeated and how well he
is progressing,@ Campbell
said. AEverybody is hoping
he continues to improve and
move forward. The
excitement is about the
horse in general and the
owner-breeder. I don't
expect people to start
foaling their mares here
because of this horse. But on
the other side, and I don't want to get too carried away with this
after just three races, maybe he'll be the type of horse Smarty
Jones was for Pennsylvania. He allowed them to move forward
and get slot machines. Maybe this is the kind of horse that
people in New Jersey outside of the racing industry will take
notice of and pay attention to the sport, our issues, farms and
open space.@

Irish War Cry=s dam Irish Sovereign | Equi-Photo
Connect | Sarah K. Andrew
Two New Jersey-breds have won the Kentucky Derby: the filly
Regret in 1915 and Cavalcade in 1934. If de Tomaso is to
become the owner and breeder of the third it will be just the
latest accomplishment in what has been a fascinating life. She
married Italian Alejandro de Tomaso, whose De Tomaso
Automobili produced, among other cars, a high-performance
Italian sports car known as the Pantera. They met through auto
racing circles, where the then Isabelle Haskell was a pioneering
female racer. She was competitive against the best in the world.
With husband Alejandro as her partner, she finished eighth in
the prestigious 12 Hours of Sebring event in 1958.
De Tomaso also raced Irish War Cry's dam, Irish Sovereign
(Polish Numbers). Also a New Jersey-bred, she wasn't a star, but
did win three times and earn $109,014 before retiring in 2005.
Her best offspring prior to Irish War Cry was Irish Strait (English
Channel), who has made $154,218 to date and who starts
Saturday in the GII Tampa Bay S. With de Tomaso among the
few New Jersey breeders who can afford to breed to top
stallions, she went to Curlin and the result was the promising
colt who may run next in the Mar. 4 GII Fountain of Youth S. and
is ranked first among all 3-year-olds in the NTRA Top 10 poll.
AYou are always hoping to get a horse like this,@ she said.
AWhen we saw him as a 2-year-old at Webb Carroll's we all
really liked him. He was a little backward then, but we really
liked him.@
Irish War Cry broke his maiden at Laurel and then won a small
stakes there before trainer Graham Motion shipped him to
Florida and threw him into the deep end of the pool for the Holy
Bull. De Tomaso never expected what was to come--a dominant
3 3/4-length win under Joel Rosario over the likes of champion
2-year-old Classic Empire (Pioneerof the Nile).
AI was hoping he would finish third,@ she admitted.
The Derby is in her plans, but so, too, of course, is the race
named for her father, the Haskell. Despite all of his success,
Amory Haskell never had a top 3-year-old colt as his best horse
was Blue Sparkler, a Jersey-bred who was named champion
older mare in 1956.
AI'd love to win the Haskell,@ de Tomaso said. AI just hope
things keep going with him the way they have. But you know
how things are when it comes to racing. You just never know.@
CONNECT TO STAND AT LANE=S END Paul Pompa, Jr.=s GI Cigar Mile hero Connect (Curlin--Bullville
Belle, by Holy Bull) will stand at Will Farish=s Lane=s End Farm
upon his retirement from racing.
"He's by an emerging top-class sire that's one of the most
commercially sought after stallions in the market,@ said Farish.
AHe will cross beautifully with A.P. Indy line mares, which Curlin
has had so much
success with. He's
an outstanding
physical, very much
akin to the
successful stallions
on our roster today.
We're confident
breeders will find
him very attractive.
We're certainly
grateful for the opportunity to partner with Mr. Pompa and very
pleased with the strength of the syndicate behind this horse.@
Graduating at second asking at Belmont last May, Connect
followed suit with victories in an Elmont allowance on the
GI Belmont S. undercard June 11 and Saratoga=s Curlin S. July 29.
Sixth behind champion Arrogate (Unbridled=s Song) in the
GI Travers S. Aug. 27, the dark bay returned to winning ways in
the GII Pennsylvania Derby Sept. 24 and closed out his
sophomore campaign with a victory in the Cigar Mile Nov. 26.
The now 4-year-old, whose record stands at 7-5-0-1 with
$1.25 million in earnings, is currently in training with Chad
Brown at Palm Meadows and is expected to make his 2017
debut this spring.
"Connect is poised to be one of the top older horses this year,@
said Brown. AHe's done everything we've asked of him from his
stakes debut at Saratoga to defeating the Derby and Preakness
winner and winning his first Grade I. He ran a 1 on the sheets in
the Cigar and there are very few active horses running those
kinds of figures."

Pompa purchased Connect for $150,000 at the Fasig-Tipton

Pompa=s GISW Backseat Rhythm (El Corredor).
"I've been very fortunate to own many top class racehorses,
but Connect is in another league," said Pompa. "When it came
time to determine the future of his stallion career, the best
choice was Lane's End. Their success in making world class
stallions and the people involved made it a very easy decision.

earned a very strong 88
Beyer Speed Figure for that
debut effort going a one-turn mile (video) at the Big A. She takes
on eight rivals while making her two-turn bow in the Suncoast.
Elate has posted four workouts at Bill Mott=s Payson base since
mid-January, most recently covering four furlongs in :50.20
(9/16) Feb. 7.
AAny time you have one win like she did on debut and run that
fast of a figure you start to have high hopes and big dreams,@
Claiborne=s Walker Hancock commented. ABill [Mott] gave her
some time off after that race in preparation for her 3-year-old
campaign. She has been training well and has posted some solid
works. The [GI Kentucky] Oaks is our goal, but right now we are
taking her one race at a time.@
The well-related Elate is the first foal from the stakes winner
Cheery (Distorted Humor). Her second dam Yell (A.P. Indy), a
half-sister to Eastern Echo and Praise (dam of Congrats and
Flatter), captured a pair of graded stakes victories and was also
third in the 2003 GI Kentucky Oaks. Claiborne=s Seth W. Hancock
purchased Elate=s third dam Wild Applause (Northern Dancer), a
Paul Mellon homebred and half-sister to Kentucky Derby winner
Sea Hero, for $1.025 million at the 1992 Keeneland November
Sale.
IN FRANCE, A REVOLUTIONBy Chris McGrath
Even on a grey winter day, the Normandy landscape draws you
into its repose. Villages huddle around their churches in misty
folds of damp pasture, smoke idling from the chimneys of
timber cottages. Ghostly poplars taper into a low, vaporous sky.
Sometimes this thins out sufficiently for a cold silver disc to peer
down on the orchards, before fading away again as though to
preserve the warmth it will need to coax them back into the
gaudy blossom of spring. To everything its season. For it is not
just the cider, fermenting quietly in its casks, that is renewing
the timeless, patient cycles of local husbandry. In the swollen
barrels of Thoroughbred mares, on stud farms throughout
Normandy, another furtive mystery is unfolding--one of no less
certain yield, daily accruing the strengths and weaknesses to be
measured in a distant reckoning: the uncorking of the crop, in
the sales ring and on the racecourse. Often, come the day, all
those months of planning and nurture have proved a waste:
sample after sample soured, headache after headache. Recent
vintages, however, have produced a glorious effervescence--and
an intoxicating sense that French bloodstock is regaining its lost
elan.

WITH RICK PORTERBe it Eight Belles, Hard Spun, Jostle,
Havre de Grace or the great champion
Songbird, owner Rick Porter keeps
coming up with terrific race horses.
How does he do it? We talk to him
about that, plans for Songbird for this
year and his other top prospects, as
well as how he is he faring in his battle
with cancer, in this week's guest on the Thoroughbred

Two farms, from very different starting points and with very
different agendas, have somehow fallen in step to help lead this
revival. One was steeped in history, as the nursery of many
champion thoroughbreds. Go into the office at Haras d'Etreham
today and you see faded black-and-white photos of two
full-sisters reared here by the Comte de Chambure: Djebellica
and Montenica, by Djebel out of Nica, respectively winners of
the 1951 Irish Oaks and 1947 Prix de Diane. The manor house is
baronial, approached by endless avenues of trees, and
surrounded by an estate village of sandstone staff cottages and
stabling.
One of the most momentous single days in modern history
found its epicentre just three miles away, at Omaha Beach on
D-Day. But this place is redolent only of continuity. The Comte's
son, Rolande, became one of the most influential and
imaginative men in the international bloodstock community,
together with Alec Head introducing French blood to Kentucky
and for 20 consecutive years making Etreham the leading
consignor at the nearby Deauville sales. Yet while his son Marc
continued the hegemony for a while, Etreham had begun to
reflect the stagnation of the local breeding industry by the time
Marc's 26-year-old nephew, Nicolas, took over five years ago.
The old estate was being challenged at every turn by start-ups
and upstarts: places, in fact, like Haras de la CauviniPre. Albeit
itself one of the older studs in France--with steep tiling, dormers
and finials round the stallion yard--Cauviniere had been devoted
to showjumpers and trotters for a generation before its revival
under new ownership in 2006. Under Sylvain and Elisabeth
Vidal, CauviniPre joined the likes of Coulonces, Monceaux and
La Motteraye in ambitious modernisation in the consignment of
French yearlings. By 2011, the same year that Nicolas de
Chambure acceded at Etreham, things were going so well here
that Sylvain Vidal summoned his compatriot Mathieu Alex--a
former colleague at Coolmore, where both had learned the
ropes--to help supervise the young stallion who had just started
there at a fee of i5,000.

CLARIFICATION/APOLOGY: In my column Wednesday, I made a
remark about Agambling degenerates@ which has offended some
readers. I unreservedly apologize; it was meant as a joke, though
it clearly wasn=t a very successful attempt at irony. I almost
wrote Agambling degenerates like me,@ and obviously I should
have. I am one myself! I have been spotted in simulcast parlors
and betting shops in the past. Truly sorry; didn=t mean it like it
sounded to some!

The once-raced Third Day had to work for it, but managed to
remain unbeaten in two career appearances with a hard-fought
success in Wednesday=s Just One More S. at Gulfstream Park. A
good-looking winner of a sloppy Monmouth maiden at first
asking on the Haskell Day undercard July 31, the dark bay
opened at 3-5 for this first run since, touched 6-5 on the drift--
yielding favoritism for a few clicks to Basha--but was ultimately
off at 11-10 to 13-10 Basha. Third Day settled in fourth on the
inside early on and began to warm up to the task while being
asked for run entering the far turn. Still having to be ridden
along nearing the stretch, he loomed up three deep under a
right-handed stick, joined Barry Karafin Bets inside the final
furlong and fought his way to a narrow success. A $150,000
Keeneland September yearling purchase, Third Day breezed a
quarter-mile in a slick :21 flat and was knocked down to Town
and Country and Spendthrift Farm for $575,000 at last year=s
OBS March sale. Third Day=s stakes-winning dam produced an
Into Mischief filly in 2016 and has already foaled a filly by Carpe
Diem (Giant=s Causeway) this year. The Just One More did not
qualify for black-type for this running. Click for the

TOASTED (f, 4, Successful Appeal--Miss Wineshine {SW & GISP,
$189,080}, by Wolf Power {SAf}) was placed in her first two
career tries, both in the slop, and was exiting a third as the 12-5
chalk in a six-furlong maiden at this track Jan. 15. Toasted was
first to break the line, but was content to lay second, as the well-
meant firster Bistro (Eskendereya) showed decent early speed.
Always traveling on the bridle for Ronnie Allen, Jr., she drew
alongside Bistro at the quarter pole and put that one away with
ease en route to a 4 3/4-length tally as the 6-5 favorite. The
homebred is a half to Mayor Marv (Distorted Humor), SW,
$151,758; and Midnight Hawk (Midnight Lute), GSW, $591,750.
Texas-bred Miss Wineshine, a stakes-winner and third in the
1999 GI Spinaway S. for Mike Pegram, was purchased by Lantern
Hill for $15,000 in foal to Midnight Lute at Keeneland January in
2012. She is the dam of a 2-year-old colt by Shackleford and was
most recently bred to Lookin at Lucky. Lifetime Record: 5-1-1-2,
$23,296. Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored

LIME BEACH (f, 4, Giant=s Causeway--Laughing Lashes {GSW &
MG1SP-Ire, $218,484}, by Mr. Greeley) rounded out the trifecta
in two tries over the Laurel turf course and was third in her first
local spin Dec. 21 after striking some interference 2 1/2 furlongs
from home. Prominent in the run from between horses, Lime
Beach emerged from that trio to try to put some pressure on
front-running No Fault (Blame) as they circled the second turn.
Lime Beach drew more or less on even terms in the stretch, but
could not fight past and crossed the line second. Stewards
ultimately ruled that No Fault was guilty of carrying out Lime
Beach late and demoted her to second. A $100,000 Keeneland
September graduate, Laughing Lashes won the 2010
G2 Keeneland Debutante S. and was second in the G1 Moyglare
Stud S. for a syndicate headed up by bloodstock agent Ben
McElroy. She was later third in the 2011 G1 Irish 1000 Guineas
in the colors of Betty Moran=s Brushwood Stable. The dam of the
2-year-old Laughing Stranger (Medaglia d=Oro), Laughing Lashes
produced a filly by the latter sire in 2016 and was purchased by
David and Diane Nagle=s Barronstown Stud in foal to Medaglia
d=Oro for $450,000 at last year=s Keeneland November sale.
