First and foremost, know the six ways to punctuate
when you use transitions…with periods…
1.) The roads are slippery and dangerous because of the storm. However, we are going to drive to themall.2.) The roads are slippery and dangerous. We, however, are going todrive to the mall.3.) The roads are slippery and dangerous. We are going to drive to themall, however.
With semi-colons
1.) The weather is bad right now; however,
we are going to drive to the mall.
2.) The weather is bad right now; we,
however, are going to drive to the mall.
3.) The weather is bad right now; we are
going to drive to the mall, however.
*While they are possible to use, semi-
colons are typically not common. For this
reason, try avoiding them.
Know this…
If you do not know how to properly
punctuate with transitions, you run the
risk of creating run-on sentences, which
are no-no‟s when you write in English.
Example:
We have to leave now, otherwise, we
are going to be late. Comma splice!
Connectives to give examples…
For example…For instance…Such
as…e.g. (eg in British English):
FOR EXAMPLE and FOR INSTANCE
mean the same thing. They can be used
in the same way. They are both used for
specific lists or examples…
Use them after an independent
clause…
Seattle produced some very importantbands in the 1990s, for example, Alice in Chains, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden.
Seattle produced some very importantbands in the 1990s, for instance, Alice in Chains, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden.
You can use them at the
beginning of a sentence…
***When they start a sentence, you
MUST follow them with a complete
sentence structure!
Wrong: Seattle has produced some very
important bands. For instance, Nirvana,
Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and Alice in
Chains. This is not a complete
sentence.
Same goes for semi-colons…
Seattle has produced some very
important bands; for instance, Nirvana,
Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, and Pearl
Jam. Incomplete sentence structure!
Be careful with this!
Make sure you have complete
sentence structure…
Seattle has produced some very
important musicians and bands. For
example, Jimi Hendrix, Alice in Chains,
and Soundgarden all had their
foundations in Seattle.
And after semi-colons…
Seattle has produced some very
important musicians and bands; for
example, Soundgarden had its
beginnings in Seattle.
e.g. (or “eg” in British English)
Means “for example” / “for instance,” but
it can only come in the middle of a
sentence.
Seattle produced some very important
bands in the 1990s, e.g., Nirvana and
Alice in Chains.
Such as…
Can come in the middle of a sentence:
I prefer to listen to bands such as Tool.
Or…after the subject…
Some bands, such as Rage Against the
Machine and Guns „N Roses, are from
Los Angeles.
Or…in between “such…as” at the
beginning of a sentence…
Such hard rock bands as the Smashing
Pumpkins and Wilco come from
Chicago.
DO NOT!!!
Overuse these or any other transitions!
-When you use connectives to giveexamples, use them right!
-You should only have three at the mostthroughout your entire essay…one per body paragraph…that‟s it! Anythingmore would be bad! Less than threewould be AWESOME!
Connectives to carry on the same
idea…
Moreover…Furthermore…In
addition…Besides: all transitions that
mean “also.”
Example: New Jersey has some
beautiful beaches. Furthermore, it has
some very exciting amusement parks.
Moreover…
New Jersey has beautiful beaches. It
has some very exciting amusement
parks, moreover.
New Jersey has beautiful beaches. It,
moreover, has some very exciting
amusement parks.
In addition…as a transition…
New Jersey has beautiful beaches; in
addition, it has some very exciting
amusement parks.
New Jersey has some beautiful
beaches. In addition, it has some very
exciting amusement parks.
Besides…as a transition…
New Jersey has some beautiful
beaches. Besides, it has some very
exciting amusement parks.
New Jersey has some beautiful
beaches. It has some very exciting
amusement parks, besides.
In addition to / Besides … can
also be prepositions!
They must be followed by an object!
In addition to having beautiful beaches,
New Jersey has some exciting
amusement parks.
New Jersey has some beautiful beaches
in addition to exciting amusement parks.
Besides…
Besides having some exciting amusement
parks, New Jersey has beautiful beaches.
New Jersey has some exciting amusement
parks besides beautiful beaches.
Besides having beautiful beaches, New
Jersey has exciting amusement parks.
