Curvy Women Who are Changing America’s Standards

Why is Body Image Important?• A good body image is an essential part of healthy self-esteem.

• Having a negative body image can lead to problems such as low self-esteem, depression, and eating disorders.

• Eating disorders can lead to serious health problems such as type 2 diabetes and heart failure.

• Having a good body image means you like and accept your body the way it is, and you don’t feel the need to change it.

• Having a poor body image means you have problems accepting yourself the way you are.

• If you have a healthy body image, you’re more likely to be mentally and emotionally stable.

• Body image isn’t always tied to reality. You could have a supermodel figure and still hate your body.

• A healthy body image will improve your self-esteem, confidence, physical and mental health, as well as your relationships. http://www.3fatchicks.com/why-a-positive-body-image-is-important/http://www.fitday.com/fitness-articles/nutrition/for-women/the-importance-of-maintaining-a-healthy-body-image.html

Times are ChangingRefinery 29, a Body-Positive website for women, is working to improve body image by

removing negative, outdated phrases, promoting the Anti-Diet Project, and sharing some interesting statistics.

http://www.refinery29.com/shame-based-language-body-confidencehttp://www.refinery29.com/2016/04/107683/female-body-image-statistics-2016

• Refinery 29 is working to kill shame-based phrases such as “bikini body” and “guilt-free”.

• The website states that most gyms promote negative body image with terms such as “Summer Slim-Down”

• The website states that the phrase “Real Women” is actually negative, because there’s no one specific way to define a “real woman.”

• The website conducted a body image survey of 1,100 Refinery 21 readers ages 18-54. The results were surprising.

• According to the survey, 54% of the women were mostly happy with their bodies.

• 32% were a little happy with their bodies, and only 12% weren’t happy at all.

• 86% of the women said they worked out for general health reasons, not to get thinner.

• 74% wanted to get toned (not thin), and 67% wanted to get stronger.

• Weight loss wasn’t even one of the top four reasons for working out.
