Experience with Atkins
(September 2013 – October 2013) Secondment to India
As part of my development I completed a one month secondment to the Global Design Centre (GDC) an office in India.
My objective was to help build relationships between the GDC and the Trowbridge office. I met with members of the team
who were to provide assistance on my projects I managed. I carried out presentations to introduce myself and my role
within the Major Maintenance team. I informed the team of the type of works and responsibilities they will undertake on the
Wiltshire Contract and held seminars on UK drawings and documentation. I now collaborate with them on the majority of
my projects. The experience of face to face contact with the team was priceless now working with the GDC on a daily
basis from the UK and I have grown in confidence when dealing with other people because of this opportunity.
(2012 – present) Managing People
The colleagues I manage are Clerk of Works, Apprentice Technicians / Summer Graduates and a team in the GDC. The
Clerk of Works may vary therefore it is crucial to have good communication skills to help them to understand the design I
have created, as they will be monitoring the construction stage.
Managing the Apprentice Technicians / Summer Graduates includes generating their work load and increasing their
experience by progressing them into Engineers through mentoring and training. I involve them with different aspects of the
design stage by teaching them how to prepare technical drawings using AutoCAD and the creation of other documents; I
take them out on site during the investigation and construction stage increasing their awareness of how to assess what
construction works are required. I am also keen to help with their preparation of documents for their professional
qualifications and assist by finding relevant tasks which meet their objectives. I have also taken part in the interview
process as a second interviewer for the Apprentice Technicians / Summer Graduates.
The team I manage in the GDC is a very different experience to managing people in England as there is not the
opportunity to have the constant face to face contact. Therefore communication is undertaken via email, conference calls
or telephone. The GDC assist on most of my projects therefore it is important to hold review meetings with them and try to
be available to answer any queries they may have. I have learnt from working with the GDC that they have a very proud
culture and see asking questions as a weakness, therefore when having conversations I always try to prompt questions
about the projects. It is also the same when sending back amends to documents, a careful approach is required so they
do not feel offended and jeopardise the relationship.
(2013 – present) SCRIM Inspections
I carry out annual site investigation of various SCRIM sites on behalf of Wiltshire Council. Using SCRIM deficiency and
texture depth reports to assist with the inspections. The work entails:
Visual survey of the top 100 SCRIM deficient sites
Collate and analyse annual condition survey (SCRIM) and accident data over the previous 3 years
Report (including photos) findings from survey and give recommendations for treatment (where applicable),
review of the Investigatory Level for each site, details of location and current state, estimated costs of any
recommended treatments and produce summary table.
(2012 - present): Minor Improvement Schemes & Surface Only Schemes
Within my current role as Assistant Engineer for the above programme of works, I am responsible for Producing a detailed
design, preparation of documents, stakeholder notification, monitoring the ongoing construction works and account
approval. This included:
Detailed Design
Analysing data compiled from initial site assessments, drainage surveys, CBR & coring results, the DMRB and
the TSRGD to produce a design for pavement depths, carriageway reconstruction, carriageway re-alignment,
kerbing and footway works, drainage repairs, installation of new drainage, replacement of existing road markings
and permanent signs.

Document Preparation
Producing technical drawings, bill of quantities, site measures, health and safety information complying with CDM
2015, environmental assessments and utility information. This is compiled to produce a works package and
handed over to the Contractor to enable the scheme to be constructed.
Contractor Liaison
ECI meetings with the Contractor to distinguish buildability and suitable traffic management. Chairing pre-
commencement and progress meetings. Undertaking joint site measures in accordance to the MCHW.
Client Liaison
On site meetings with the Client and local Councillors and presenting my designs. Meetings with the Wiltshire
Streetworks team to agree traffic management, diversion routes and diversionary signing schemes.
Finance
I monitor the finances of the project / programme to ensure it stays within budget and sign off Contractor
payment applications.
The Minor Improvement Schemes programme value varies from £400,000 to £900,000 for 4 – 6 schemes, each ranging
from £150,000 to £400,000.
The Surface Only Schemes programme is valued at £2,250,000 for 10 – 14 schemes, each ranging from £45,000 to
£420,000.
(2012 - present): Footways Programme
Design Engineer for the Footways programme. Responsibilities were to manage the day to day running of the
Reconstruction Footways programme. Sites were proposed by the Area Highway Engineers and required a joint
assessment with the Contractor to ensure that they were suitable for the particular treatment. Once designs were
produced and issued to the Contractor a programme of could then be established. Ongoing communication with the Area
Offices took place throughout the works, informing them of suitable sites, programmed dates and confirmation of site
completion. The annually budget for the programme of works was £250,000 and the number of sites ranged between 20 -
30 sites, however the 2014/2015 budget has been £600,000.
Experience prior to Atkins – Mouchel (2007 - 2012)
(2009 - 2012): Minor Improvement Schemes
Design Engineer for the Minor Improvement Schemes programme of works. Responsibilities were to create a detailed
design, prepare documentation, site monitoring and account approval. The works included re-alignment of the carriageway
utilising a design from the Highways team, using the design to calculate pavement depths and kerbing levels. Other works
involved deep binder patching of selected areas of carriageway. Undertook improvements to the existing drainage system.
Installation of kerbing to new levels specified by the Highway Design and installation of new signing and road markings,
using the DMRB and the TSRGD as a guide.
The works were carried out utilising road closures, traffic signals and temporary 30mph speed limits, which was agreed
with the Wiltshire Council Street Works team prior to the scheme commencement. The annual value of the programme was
£550,000 which varied between 4 – 6 schemes. The value of each scheme varying from £100,000 to £150,000.
(2008 - 2012): Footways Programme

Reconstruction Footways programme and the Slurry Seal Footways programme. Sites were proposed by the Area Highway
Engineers and required a joint assessment with the Contractor to ensure that they were suitable for the particular
treatment. Once designs were produced and issued to the Contractor a programme of works for each treatment could then
be established. Ongoing communication with the Area Offices and local stakeholders took place throughout the works,
informing them of suitable sites, programmed dates and confirmation of site completion. The annually budget for each
programme of works was £250,000 and the number of sites ranged between 25 - 30 sites. The value of each scheme
