DARDANELLE HIGH STUDENT
TRAVELS TO VALLEY FORGE
Local representatives of the American Veterans organization (AMVETS) recently gave the Dardanelle JROTC program an
opportunity to send a cadet to Valley Forge near Philadelphia for the Spirit of America Youth Conference. Rebecca Hender-
son was the cadet who attended and was the only
cadet from Arkansas present. Rebecca spent 4
days at the conference, she arrived on Thursday
and returned on Sunday.
The day after arrival, the Freedoms Foundation group immediately left for Colonial Philadelphia. First stop was Independ-
ence Hall. It was learned that the hall wasn't meant to be a federal government building, it was built to be a state govern-
ment building and was borrowed when the federal government
moved out of New York (yes they started in New York). After
touring the building, the group walked to where the Liberty Bell
was displayed. Where as many people think the bell was made,
cracked, was recast, and immediately cracked again, the bell
actually has a much longer history: the first time it was struck,
it did crack; then after two attempts to fix it, it lasted for
decades, cracked, was haphazardly fixed, and rang for several
more years before it got so bad they decided to retire the bell
for good.
The Freedoms Foundation kids then returned to Valley Forge
for dinner and a Medal of Honor Workshop. In the workshop,
they heard the story of Cory Etchberger's father, an Air
Force ra-
dar specialist. Etchberger served in Vietnam, and had to retire from the
military (at least on paper) so that he could secretly run a military radar
satellite as a civilian in Laos (a country we were not supposed to be in).
When discovered and attacked by the Vietnamese, he picked up a gun
and defended the non-military personnel who were with him. He was not
shot until he was going up to the helicopter, when he was shot in the
back and fatally wounded. At the time he received the Air Force Cross
because the mission was classified, many years later, he was finally given
the Medal of Honor the military had wanted to give him.
There was a bit of acting and dress up the next day, when a very realis-
tic looking Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson came to Valley Forge to have a debate. One of the main points to the
debate is that not all of the founding fathers liked or agreed on the government that had been written. The new document
had been a mass of compromises, that not all were satisfied with. None of them had seen anything like what was being made
and none of them knew if it was even going to work. They referred to it as the Great American Experiment.
Rebecca was very excited to be attending the conference, and was even more so upon return. The chance to go see one of
the places America began was a great experience and an real eye opener. She also would like to thank the AMVETS organiza-
tion for providing her with this amazing opportunity to see a big part of American history
