Veps villages included in the List of places of traditional residence and economic activity of the Indigenous small numbered peoples of the Russian Federation.

Veps or Vepsians are a Finnicpeople who speak the Vepslanguage, which belongs to the Finnic branch of the Uralic languages. According to the 2002 census, there were 8,240 Veps in Russia.

• In 1994, three Veps national village councils: Shokshinsky, Sheltozersky and Ryboretskymerged into the Veps national Volost with the center in the village Sheltozero, becoming an independent administrative unit in the status of the district.

• In 2006 the Veps National Volost was abolished: the Vepsnational village councils were again part of the Prionezhskydistrict.

• For today in the territory of the Prionezhskydistrict operates about 8 quarries.

• Extraction is conducted by open-pit mining

Ecologists consider the activities of these quarries as a extremely negative

phenomenon for the environment.
