Baines' History, Directory & Gazetteer of the County of York states that the "ancient and respectable" family of Wilberfoss resided here from the Norman Conquest to 1710, after which the family estate and mansion was sold. A family descendant was William Wilber- force, and the Wilberforce family still provided patronage for the parish living. A priory of Benedictine nuns was founded at Wilberfoss by Elias de Cotton during the reign of Henry II, which at the time of the Suppression of the Monasteries by Henry VIII had a yearly value of £26. 10s. 8d. The priory lay just to the north of St John's Church; nothing of it remains today. WILBERFOSS IN BLOOMAt last signs of spring are appearing throughout the village...the snowdrops areout together with the aconites   and the Rooks are building their nests andmaking a lot of noise. Throughout this month we will be out and about plantingour spring displays and tidying the borders etc.,and hope you will join us on ourgardening evenings. These begin on 6th April from 6.30 to 8 o'clock and will beheld on the first Thursday in the month, meeting outside the Community Centre.If you can't make these evening, maybe a morning would be more to your likingand we are starting   a morning session on the third Thursday of themonth beginning 16th March  from 10.30 to 12noon. Everyone is welcomewhatever age, it is not heavy work just a nice friendly group determined to keepour village looking lovely and welcoming. The Duck Race is on Easter Sundayand as usual our cake stall will be there selling fantastic confectionary. In Maylook out for our annual plant sale which is always full of great bargains (date tobe arranged). We say a sad but fond farewell to Mandy Brisco who has tendered herresignation due to family commitments. Mandy was fully committed to therole, getting involved in the Action A1079 campaign group and attending othermeetings on behalf of the Parish Council. Mandy will be sadly missed but wewish her well in all her other involvement within the parish. Notices of thevacancy have been displayed on the Parish Council notice boards.

We’ve requested the return of salt bins to Beckside and Moorfield Way. Thesewere removed by East Riding of Yorkshire Council without consultation and inthe recent icy conditions have proved necessary.

A replacement litter bin will be installed outside the shop on Main Street.
