DART-SVP Source Rev 1: (SN: SVPS00XXX)
Figure 2: Placing the X-Rail into the Cradle
Using the 3mm Allen wrench, remove the three screws that attach the X-cradle to the base of the DART
SVP. Take the X-Rail and slide the non-motor end (end opposite the cable) into the cradle, making sure
that the front of the stage faces the screw holes.
Reference the Hardware and Network Installation Manual v2 manual to determine the exact placement of
the rail in the cradle as this procedure depends on the version and revision of the rail.
Using the 1.5mm Allen wrench, lock the rail into position by tightening the two set screws on the front of
the cradle. Once the rail is placed back onto the DART these set screws will be inaccessible.

DART-SVP Source Rev 2: (SN: SVPS002XX)
The revision 2 DART-SVP source, pictured below, has an X-Rail Cradle but it is not removable from the
source baseplate. Simply place the linear rail directly into the cradle on the baseplate, and lock into place
using the two set screws.
As with the Rev 1 source, reference the Hardware and Network Installation Manual v2 to determine the
exact placement of the rail in the cradle.
Y-Rail Installation:
Place the X-Y mounting block on top of the X-Rail stage. Using four 2.5mm screws and the
2.5mm Allen wrench loosely secure the block onto the X-Rail stage, aligning the Y-Rail so that
the front piece of the Y-rail’s stage faces the DART-SVP cradle. Tighten the two 1.5mm set
screws on the side of the X-Y mounting block facing the DART-SVP for good alignment and
then finish tightening the four 2.5mm screws on top of the X-Y mounting block to finish the
attachment.

Figure 4: Showing the alignment of the X- and Y-Rails before they are connected.
Figure 5: Secure the Y-Rail to the X-Rail using a 2.5mm Allen wrench.
To attach the Y-Rail to the X-Y mounting block slide the non-motor end of the rail into the
cradle, leaving it so the end of the rail is flush with the end of the mounting block. Using the
1.5mm Allen wrench, tighten the two set screws to lock the rail in place.

Pull the DART SVP source housing all of the way back from the mass spectrometer inlet and
remove the ceramic tube from the VAPUR interface. Supporting the rail assembly carefully,
place the cradle back into the space between the MS interface and DART-SVP source, with the
three screws on the DART-SVP side of the set-up.

DART-SVP Source Rev 1: Loosen the two knobs on the back of the pillars holding the blue DART
source. Raise the DART source to its maximum height so that the 3+D sample tray can fit underneath it.
Loosen the knobs on the side of the DART and turn it downward three clicks so that it is now pointed
downward at a 45 degree angle. Tighten the knobs to lock it back into place.

DART-SVP Source Rev 2: Attach the SVP-45A angle module to the DART source housing. Use the
spinning knob to adjust to the proper height.
Figure 10: Rev 2 Source with SVP-45A angle module
Place the mounting block of the 3+D stage on the Y-Rail block and loosely secure the top of the mounting
block using four 2.5mm hex screws. Using a 1.5mm Allen wrench, tighten the two set screws on the back
side of the mounting block for proper alignment and then finish by completely tightening the four 2.5mm
hex screws on the top of the block.

Insert the longer ceramic tube into the VAPUR inlet, taking care to leave a 2mm gap between the end of
the ceramic tube and the API inlet. Refer to the specific Vapur Flange Manual for the mass spectrometer
that the DART-SVP is being installed on for more details.

Software
Check the “About” page on the Settings tab of the SVP software to see the version of software currently
loaded. For this manual v3.x.x or higher should be uploaded.
The most up to date version of software can be downloaded from the IonSense website at this
address: http://www.ionsense.com/software
If the software needs to be updated then download the file from the IonSense website and
reference the DART Software Manual v3 for instructions on how to perform the update. A
printed version of this software manual comes with each DART system, or can be accessed here:

Methods
Once the software is updated select the Methods tab at the bottom of the software screen. There
will be one method available for the 3+D Scanner called 3+D Imaging to add into the current list
of methods. To add in a method, click on the “Add” button in the upper right corner of the
Methods page and select the desired method.
NOTE: The methods may need to be added to the main list; for further details reference page 8
of the Software Manual v3.
3+D Imaging
This is the standard/generic method for the 3+D scanner. It performs a basic back and
forth scan of a 2D surface.
Before running the method, be sure the Linear Rail settings are correct. If they aren’t the
methods won’t run properly. To check, click on the Settings tab in the software; open both
Linear Rail #1 (X) and Linear Rail #2 (Y). A left handed setup should have left selected for both
Motor Location and Sample Direction and vice versa for a right handed setup. Below are the
correct settings for a left handed rail setup.
12
Once the method is selected either hit Start to begin the method, or select Edit to change the
various parameters. The 3+D Imaging method parameters are described in more detail on the
following page.
13
3+D Imaging
The following parameters can be adjusted:
Sample Count
Number of rows.
Ion Mode
Ions can be positive or negative.
Temperature
The temperature of the heater.
X Start Position
X location where the sample starts.
X Sample Speed
How fast the X rail moves over the sample.
X Length
Length of the sample.
Y Start Position
Y location where the sample starts.
Y Sample Speed
How fast the Y rail moves over the sample.
Y Spacing
Distance between rows.
Shutdown State
The system can be kept in run or standby mode for
repeated use or automatically shut down.
Standby Temperature
If the system is kept in run or standby mode, this
temperature will be maintained.
