Charles Darwin was born inShrewsbury, England onthe February 12, 1809
His father was a wealthydoctor and financier,Robert Darwin and hismother was SusannahDarwin.
Charles was baptized in theAnglican Church in keepingwith his mothers religiousbeliefs.
At age 16 he was sent tostudy medicine at theUniversity of Edinburgh,where he was repelled bysurgery performed without
anesthetics he leftschool.

In 1827 he started theology studies atChrist's College, Cambridge
He was drawn to collect plants, insects,and geological specimens.
He pursued his interests in taxidermy,natural history, marine biology, botanyand zoology.
At Cambridge he studied botany with the
Reverend John Stevens HenslowIt was Henslow that recommended
Charles to Robert FitzRoy, who was thecaption of the HMS Beagle.

HMS BEAGLE
Missions purpose was to chart the coastline ofSouth America.
The voyage lasted 5 years.
Darwin spent a majority of that time on landand collected a variety of fossils andspecimens of living organisms.
Studying the mockingbirds and tortoises in thearea, the theory of the origin of the speciesbegan to take root in his mind.
In 1836, when he returned from his voyage, hewas already quite famous. He had provedhimself as a competent naturalist. Upon hisreturn, he began catalog his collections andbotanical specimens.

HMS Beagles Research
In 1837 he presented his paper on the risinglandmasses to the Geological Society of London.
He also received a grant of 1000 Pounds for hisbook Zoology of the Voyage of the HMS Beagle
In 1838, Darwin became the secretary of theGeological Society. Meanwhile he continued withhis studies of transmutation of the species.
Most of the time he worked toward the completionof his book Origin of Species which he feared torelease because he believed that most would workto debunk all of his theories.
