ANU Summer Research ScholarshipsThese scholarships offer students from around Australia the opportunity to undertake a research project at the Australian National University in Canberra.
Who can apply?
These scholarships are:
Available to Indigenous and non-Indigenous people
Available for any relevant undergraduate course
Must be undertaken at the ANU but are available to students enrolled in any Australian university
Additional criteria:
You must be in at least the second year of a bachelors degree course (including medicine)

Cancer Council Western Australia - Edward and Patricia Usher Student Vacation Research ScholarshipsEach year the Cancer Council of Western Australia offers scholarships for students to undertake research projects broadly related to cancer during the summer holidays.

Human Genetics Society Vacation ScholarshipsThese scholarships offer an opportunity for students to undertake a research project in human genetics over the summer holidays under the supervision of a member of the Human Genetics Society of Australasia (HGSA) in Perth.

How much is it worth?
A total of $2,500. You will be paid $2000 at the beginning of the research period, and the remaining $500 on its completion

Indigenous Medical Student Placement Program (DoHA and AIDA)This program is a partnership between the Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing (DoHA) together with the Australian Indigenous Doctors’ Association (AIDA).
It offers an opportunity for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander medical students from anywhere in Australia to undertake a placement in health policy in Canberra with the Office of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health (OATSIH) within DoHA. Up to two placements may be offered each year.

This scholarship is open to Indigenous medical students from anywhere in Australia, but must be undertaken in Canberra
Additional criteria:
This program is usually undertaken during your end of year break, but may be undertaken by a student during a mid-year break
Placements of up to eight weeks are offered but the length of each placement will be based on the individual circumstances of each student
This program will also offer you the opportunity of spending time in other areas of the Department and to undertake clinical placements at the Aboriginal Medical Service in Canberra
How much is it worth?
You’ll get paid at the Australian Public Service Level 3-6 rate depending on your level of experience and duration of your placement (up to eight weeks)
You’ll receive one week of paid holidays between Christmas and New Year
Travel to and from Canberra and your accommodation in Canberra during your placement will also be covered
Selection criteria:
An academic reference from a relevant tutor or lecturer
Availability. Priority will be given to students who can undertake longer placements (up to 8 weeks)

John Flynn Placement ProgramThis program offers medical students from across Australia the opportunity to undertake paid work experience with a doctor in a rural or remote community for two weeks a year during university holidays, usually for a period of four years. Up to 300 new students are

accepted each year.
Who can apply?
This program is:
Available to Indigenous and non-Indigenous people
Only available to medical students
Available Australia-wide
Additional criteria:
You must be in your first or second year of a graduate entry course, or in your first, second or third year of an undergraduate medical course
You must be willing to develop an ongoing relationship with your mentor doctor and get involved in all aspects of community life throughout the period of your scholarship
You aren’t able to choose where you will be placed although you have a chance to nominate a preferred State/Territory and your medical interests so that an appropriate match can be made
How much is it worth?
An allowance of $500 per week whilst you are undertaking your placements. The total value of your allowance will be $4,000 ($500 per week for two weeks a year over four years)
Travel to and from your community and basic accommodation expenses during your placement periods will also be covered
Selection criteria:
Willingness to participate in and learn about rural and remote communities and medical practices
Willingness to undertake cultural awareness training if necessary
Ability to be open minded, adaptable and pro-active
The selection process is as follows:
Each university is allocated a quota of places based on the number of enrolled students enrolled in the medical course
Your application will be assessed against the selection criteria and you will be ranked against other students from your university

Kidney Health Australia Summer Vacation ScholarshipsThese scholarships offer opportunities for undergraduate students (including medical students) to spend their summer holidays undertaking a research project broadly related to disorders of the kidney. Scholarship recipients need to arrange their own supervisor and can undertake their research from anywhere in Australia.

MS Research Australia: Summer Vacation ScholarshipsThese scholarships enable students studying medicine or science and completed at least three years of their course to spend their summer holidays undertaking research into Multiple Sclerosis (MS), usually at one of the research laboratories or rehabilitation institutes across Australia that have a presence in MS research.
Who can apply?
These scholarships are:
Available to Indigenous and non-Indigenous people
Only available to science students and medical students
These scholarships are available to university students’ at all Australian universities. Where you undertake your project is up to you but scholarships are usually awarded to projects conducted at research laboratories or rehabilitation institutes in major cities
Additional criteria:
You should have completed at least three years of your course and be re-enrolling (in an honours program or the rest of your course) the following year
You will need to arrange your own project and supervisor, and get permission from the department/institute where you plan to conduct your research
Your project does not need to be in biomedical research. It can be in social or applied research with relevance to MS

You will need to apply specifically for available projects. You can nominate up to two preferences on your application form. Each project may have its own specific eligibility and selection criteria
All Summer Research Projects are supervised and are available for a period of up to eight weeks
How much is it worth?
An allowance of $225 per week for eight weeks (paid in two instalments)
As a condition of this scholarships you‘ll be required to submit a report and make a presentation of your findings to an audience at the end of the project
Selection criteria:
Academic merit
Your suitability for the project
Any relevant work experience
A report from a referee
A letter of up to one page outlining your reasons for applying for a Summer Research Scholarship
Applications will be assessed by the project supervisor
