ANU Summer Research ScholarshipsThese scholarships offer students from around Australia the opportunity to undertake a research project at the Australian National University in Canberra.

Who can apply?

These scholarships are:

Available to Indigenous and non-Indigenous people

Available for any relevant undergraduate course

Must be undertaken at the ANU but are available to students enrolled in any Australian university

Additional criteria:

You must be in at least the second year of a bachelors degree course (including medicine)

You must be enrolled full time at an Australian university

You must be willing to participate in an ongoing research project or to undertake a substantial piece of supervised research work, which may result in a report or paper, possibly for publication

How much is it worth?

Return travel to Canberra

Accommodation and meals on campus at one of the ANU residential colleges for between eight and eleven weeks

Cancer Council Australia’s International Summer School Essay CompetitionEach year the Cancer Council of Australia hosts an essay competition for medical students with the winner being awarded a trip to Europe to attend the International Summer School for Medical Students.

How much is it worth?

A trip to Europe to attend the International Summer School for Medical Students

Selection criteria:

An essay topic is set by the Cancer Council each year. The winner will be the applicant who submits the best essay (of 2500 words) on the topic, according the following criteria:

Concise and logical presentation of the argument

Relevance to cancer care in Australia

Cancer Council Western Australia - Edward and Patricia Usher Student Vacation Research ScholarshipsEach year the Cancer Council of Western Australia offers scholarships for students to undertake research projects broadly related to cancer during the summer holidays.

Human Genetics Society Vacation ScholarshipsThese scholarships offer an opportunity for students to undertake a research project in human genetics over the summer holidays under the supervision of a member of the Human Genetics Society of Australasia (HGSA) in Perth.

Available for any relevant undergraduate degree course

This scholarship must be undertaken in Perth

Your project relevant to the area of human genetics

You must be supervised throughout the research period

Your supervisor must be a financial member of the HGSA

You must have the approval of the institution where you’ll be undertaking your project.

You must present the outcomes of your research at the first HGSA Western Australia Branch Seminar of 2010

How much is it worth?

A total of $2,500. You will be paid $2000 at the beginning of the research period, and the remaining $500 on its completion

You’ll be required to present the outcomes of your project at a seminar

Indigenous Medical Student Placement Program (DoHA and AIDA)This program is a partnership between the Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing (DoHA) together with the Australian Indigenous Doctors’ Association (AIDA).

It offers an opportunity for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander medical students from anywhere in Australia to undertake a placement in health policy in Canberra with the Office of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health (OATSIH) within DoHA. Up to two placements may be offered each year.

Only available to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people

Only available to medical students

This scholarship is open to Indigenous medical students from anywhere in Australia, but must be undertaken in Canberra

Additional criteria:

This program is usually undertaken during your end of year break, but may be undertaken by a student during a mid-year break

Placements of up to eight weeks are offered but the length of each placement will be based on the individual circumstances of each student

This program will also offer you the opportunity of spending time in other areas of the Department and to undertake clinical placements at the Aboriginal Medical Service in Canberra

How much is it worth?

You’ll get paid at the Australian Public Service Level 3-6 rate depending on your level of experience and duration of your placement (up to eight weeks)

You’ll receive one week of paid holidays between Christmas and New Year

Travel to and from Canberra and your accommodation in Canberra during your placement will also be covered

Selection criteria:

An academic reference from a relevant tutor or lecturer

Availability. Priority will be given to students who can undertake longer placements (up to 8 weeks)

The degree to which your interests are aligned with the current priorities of the Office of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health

John Flynn Placement ProgramThis program offers medical students from across Australia the opportunity to undertake paid work experience with a doctor in a rural or remote community for two weeks a year during university holidays, usually for a period of four years. Up to 300 new students are

accepted each year.

Who can apply?

This program is:

Available to Indigenous and non-Indigenous people

Only available to medical students

Available Australia-wide

Additional criteria:

You must be in your first or second year of a graduate entry course, or in your first, second or third year of an undergraduate medical course

You must be willing to develop an ongoing relationship with your mentor doctor and get involved in all aspects of community life throughout the period of your scholarship

You aren’t able to choose where you will be placed although you have a chance to nominate a preferred State/Territory and your medical interests so that an appropriate match can be made

How much is it worth?

An allowance of $500 per week whilst you are undertaking your placements. The total value of your allowance will be $4,000 ($500 per week for two weeks a year over four years)

Travel to and from your community and basic accommodation expenses during your placement periods will also be covered

Selection criteria:

Willingness to participate in and learn about rural and remote communities and medical practices

Willingness to undertake cultural awareness training if necessary

Ability to be open minded, adaptable and pro-active

The selection process is as follows:

Each university is allocated a quota of places based on the number of enrolled students enrolled in the medical course

Your application will be assessed against the selection criteria and you will be ranked against other students from your university

Kidney Health Australia Summer Vacation ScholarshipsThese scholarships offer opportunities for undergraduate students (including medical students) to spend their summer holidays undertaking a research project broadly related to disorders of the kidney. Scholarship recipients need to arrange their own supervisor and can undertake their research from anywhere in Australia.

Who can apply?

These scholarships are:

Available to Indigenous and non-Indigenous people

Available for any relevant undergraduate course (including medicine)

This scholarship can be conducted from anywhere in Australia and is available to students enrolled in any Australian university

You must be a full-time university student

Monash Vacation ScholarshipsThese scholarships offer university students interested in research the opportunity to undertake research related activities in their summer or winter holidays to further their knowledge, skills and understanding. Students are matched to specific projects at a variety of research institutions, mostly in Melbourne.

Most projects associated with these scholarships must be undertaken in Melbourne

MS Research Australia: Summer Vacation ScholarshipsThese scholarships enable students studying medicine or science and completed at least three years of their course to spend their summer holidays undertaking research into Multiple Sclerosis (MS), usually at one of the research laboratories or rehabilitation institutes across Australia that have a presence in MS research.

Who can apply?

These scholarships are:

Available to Indigenous and non-Indigenous people

Only available to science students and medical students

These scholarships are available to university students’ at all Australian universities. Where you undertake your project is up to you but scholarships are usually awarded to projects conducted at research laboratories or rehabilitation institutes in major cities

Additional criteria:

You should have completed at least three years of your course and be re-enrolling (in an honours program or the rest of your course) the following year

You will need to arrange your own project and supervisor, and get permission from the department/institute where you plan to conduct your research

Your project does not need to be in biomedical research. It can be in social or applied research with relevance to MS

How much is it worth?

An allowance of $275 per week for up to 8 weeks

A maintenance allowance of $300 is paid to your host institution to cover the cost of minor equipment and consumables

University of Sydney Summer Research ScholarshipsThese scholarships provide undergraduate students (including medical students) at the University of Sydney with the opportunity to obtain experience in medical-related research over the summer holidays. Approximately 60 scholarships are awarded each year of which roughly 20 are reserved for previous scholarship holders.

Who can apply?

These scholarships are:

Available to Indigenous and non-Indigenous people

Only available to undergraduate science students (including physical and natural sciences, and pharmacy) and medical students

Only available to students enrolled at the University of Sydney

Additional criteria:

You must be studying university full-time

You must not have already completed a Masters degree or PhD

Students who have received this scholarship on a previous occasion are encouraged to re-apply

All Summer Research Projects are supervised and are available for a period of up to eight weeks

How much is it worth?

An allowance of $225 per week for eight weeks (paid in two instalments)

As a condition of this scholarships you‘ll be required to submit a report and make a presentation of your findings to an audience at the end of the project

Your suitability for the project

Any relevant work experience

A report from a referee

A letter of up to one page outlining your reasons for applying for a Summer Research Scholarship
