For as long as folks can remember ballasting airplanes has been an arduous affair. We have used concrete blocks on rollers attached to straps around the fuselage, we have chained airplanes to the floor and we have piled dumbells in the cockpit and in the entry way. Some of the dumbells weigh in at 50 lbs or more!! With weight requirements up to 1500 lbs….that’s a whole lot of dumbells going up and down the MED to be placed on that pricey honeycomb floor. Plenty of opportunities for mashed fingers, broken doors and dented floors.Big concrete blocks on little wheels with big straps on nice paint aren’t much better and don’t allow the airplane to be moved once they’re installed. The consequences of not properly ballasting the airplane are severe. DAS and DFS combined have had five airplanes that have tipped onto the tail as a result of insufficient or improperly placed ballast. The solution has migrated it’s way across the ocean and has arrived on our shores.

Ballast weights were first used by the factory then made it to the completion center and have now made it to DAS. Two weights were delivered to ILG this spring and we have been testing them there. The weights can be installed and left in place for all maintenance operations including jacking, towing and even painting. An additional 17 weights are on order and scheduled to be delivered across the network by year end.

We’ve released a new procedure that spells out the options for ballasting airplanes. Please take the time to read it and become familiar with it. In the meantime, get ready to retire those dumbells!!

This is an exciting time. We have begun the official rollout of the new DAS training program. The former training program has been completely overhauled. Our goal was to create a training program that is useful and meaningful to all employees. By adding to each employee’s existing knowledge base, we can become stronger in all areas of our Repair Stations. The program consists of new Indoctrination training, on the job training (OJT) with trained OJT instructors, Affidavit of Experience, and a Competency Matrix of training items (identified training items). The program doubles as a tracking tool for training as well. This will result in more robust training plans and a highly trained workforce.

Our new training is a living program which is always evolving. We welcome any feedback on how the training can be improved. We began in Wilmington, and will expand to the other facilities soon. Feedback from everyone will help it grow into what we know it can be.

There is a lot of information coming to you from this program; therefore it will be released in stages so that the process of absorbing all this information goes as smoothly as possible. You will hear more about this initiative in the coming months as we release more stages. The Aircraft Maintenance department in Wilmington is now using the program with QA/QC and Avionics next to start. Several OJT trainers have completed a training class on providing proper OJT with more classes scheduled.

Our improved Indoctrination program is being fine-tuned for new employees so they can integrate faster and be a successful part of the DAS team. Contractor’s indoctrination has also been updated. By completing our requirements sooner, we can get needed personnel to their areas more quickly and efficiently.

We are following simple rules to make this new training program successful:

Solicit Employee Feedback Before implementing our training program, we consulted staff members to see where

they think improvements need to be made. As company insiders, they offered a firsthand perspective on processes that are currently working and those in need of some serious attention. This is how our initial competency lists were created.

Align Training with Organizational Initiatives This training initiative directly supports our organizational goals, so employees

will be learning something that applies to their jobs. These lessons will produce noticeable results.

Keep Materials Updated Training programs need to be updated with time, or they will become obsolete.

Outdated training materials become ineffective when they are out of touch with current marketplace trends. We will evaluate programs on an annual basis, or more often if needed, and make adjustments if any information becomes dated.

Track Results Like many others, this training program is put in place to enact positive change, but

you will not be able to gauge outcomes overnight. These changes can dramatically reduce the number of errors in our facilities while bringing the level of expertise to the point of DAS becoming the industry leader in Falcon maintenance, repair and overhaul. This is a substantial investment in time and resources. We ask that you help us make sure it is working.

If you have any questions, please ask and we will answer them the best we can. Call or email, but please ask.

For the seventh straight year, DAS hosted a chalet at the Reno Championship Air Races September 16 – 18, 2016 at the Stead Airport in Reno, Nevada. The chalet was situated right on the flight line and included a catered lunch and seats for customers and employees. Over 60 attendees watched the races from the DAS chalet. Customers who frequent ILG, LIT and RNO attended the races as well as representatives from each facility; this isn’t just a Reno event.

This year, as in years past, our Aircraft Sales Team attended and performed Falcon 900 flight demonstrations each of the 3 days for the crowd. The races themselves consist of 6 categories: Formula One, Biplane, Sport, T-6, Jet, and an Unlimited category. Qualifying rounds are held on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, and the final round is held on Sunday. This year, we were treated to a special daily performance by the Blue Angels!

This event requires months of preparation and planning, so I would like to thank some of the key players that really go the extra mile in making it all happen: Holly Adair, Angela Massey, and especially Rick Vuksanovic. Thank you for all of your efforts!

This event sheds a very positive light on our entire organization!

With just a few weeks left before cooler fall weather is upon us, now would be a great time to start taking advantage of indoor exercise programs offered through the organization. Dassault Falcon Jet and DAS have made it easy and economical for employees to include a workout program in their daily routines. 10Fitness holds quarterly on-site sign-ups and currently has 142 employees (DFJ/DAS-LIT) enrolled. Options offered include running, walking, strength training, and participating in group activities/classes. In addition to 10Fitness, there are several other discounted fitness options available to employees including: LA Fitness, Crossfit, Little Rock Athletic Club, Prevail Family Fitness of Cabot, and StraightRight Fitness.

A regular exercise program has multiple benefits, not only does it improve your physical condition, but it can improve your mental health as well. Studies show that those who exercise regularly have an increase in energy, higher self-confidence and a more positive outlook on life. They are generally more resistant to ‘cold bugs’, and have increased/sustained energy and productivity throughout the day. Regular exercise inspires confidence, improves physical and mental balance, and reduces the effects of stress.

I encourage everyone to evaluate your busy schedule and slice out a small piece of time for your health.

DAS Attends 2016 Reno Air Races

We often think of OJT or “On the Job Training” as just an undesirable part of the job, a holdover from the past when there were no robust technical training schools or when you “just need a signoff in the block” as part of a qualification. What most people really don’t realize is that OJT, when done properly, is actually real work place experience!

Having advanced training and/or a degree is an asset when it comes to making yourself more employable within your field, but it’s not the only way to stand out and separate yourself from the crowd. Real, hands-on work experience is possibly the most important aspect of being work place ready. Useful skills may be taught in the lab or classroom but are developed and built through actual real world use. If you are looking to be that “Go To” person or advancing within a company, you need to ensure that you have documented and demonstrated real work skills. Having real work skills will always look favorable to those that have success with them. This empowers untapped talent and gives employees an edge to push for the most sought after positions in their field.

Your personal development starts with you being an active participant in the development process. Taking on responsibility, stretching yourself to achieve goals and believing in the OJT process are just some of the areas needed to advance your soft and technical skill sets. Take advantage of the OJT process, it’s more important than you think.

On the Job Training, Yeah it’s Important

After four years of talks, India agrees to buy 36 fighter jetshttp://www.wsj.com/articles/india-signs-8-7-billion-deal-with-frances-dassault-aviation-for-rafale-fighter-jets-1474624503

By Santanu Choudhury Sept. 23, 2016 5:55 a.m. ET

NEW DELHI—India on Friday signed a contract to purchase 36 Rafale fighter jets from Dassault Aviation SA for 7.8 billion euros ($8.7 billion), the French company’s biggest-ever deal as it tries to outmaneuver its U.S. rivals in the global combat-plane market.

An intergovernmental agreement was signed by Indian Defense Minister Manohar Parrikar and his French counterpart Jean-Yves Le Drian, an Indian government official said. India’s cabinet Committee on Security, headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Wednesday cleared the deal which was more than four years in the making.

“This new contract illustrates the strategic relationship and the exemplary partnership maintained between the two countries and marks the natural culmination of the relationship of trust initiated in 1953 when India became Dassault Aviation’s first export customer,” the company said in a statement. The Indian Air Force currently operates Dassault’s Mirage combat aircraft.

“Rafale will significantly improve India’s strike & defence capabilities,” a post on Mr. Parrikar’s Twitter account said.

A tweet from Mr. Le Drian’s Twitter account described it as a “historic decision.”

Dassault—which has for years been trying to secure overseas deals—signed contracts with Egypt and Qatar for 24 Rafale jets each last year.

India picked Dassault to provide it with jets in January 2012, a major coup for the company which beat offerings from Eurofighter, Russia’s RAC MiG, Boeing Co., Lockheed Martin Corp. and Saab AB. At the time, India was the only foreign buyer for the jet.

A final order has however taken four years of discussions with two successive governments, as the parties grappled over cost and Dassault’s refusal to guarantee the performance and quality of the planes if they were assembled as originally planned by India’s state-run Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd.

In April last year, India cut the size of the order to 36 jets from 126 and removed a condition that most of them be assembled by Hindustan Aeronautics.

India urgently needs to expand its depleting fleet of combat planes as it faces an increasingly assertive China, and its longtime rival, Pakistan. The air force has been urging the government to expand its fighter jet fleet, much of which is made up of aging planes acquired during the Soviet-era.

The twin-engine Rafale—which has the capability to deliver nuclear weapons—will have features such as advanced electronically scanned array radar, midair refueling and electronic warfare equipment.

All the planes from the latest order will be manufactured in France, with the first jet scheduled for delivery in three years, the government official said.

From the onset of the freak accident that happened with our aircraft there was very little resistance at all in supporting our aircraft instantly the only hesitation was just wrapping everyone’s head around how to get it accomplished with as little impact as possible to our flight department’s schedule.
