COVID-19 OUTBREAK IN KENYA DAILY SITUATION REPORT - 044
1. KEY HIGHLIGHTS
1. Twelve (12) new confirmed COVID-19 cases were reported in the last 24 hours bringing the total
number of confirmed cases in Kenya to 396 cases as of 30 April 2020. All are Kenyans, all cases
are local transmission. Counties reporting new cases are Mombasa (7), Nairobi (3), Kitui (1) and
Wajir (1).
2. Two new deaths have been reported over the last 24 hrs. The total number of deaths reported
since the beginning of the outbreak is 17, case fatality rate (CFR) is four percent.
3. Fifteen (15) more cases have recovered raising the total number of recoveries and discharges for
COVID-19 to one hundred and twenty-four (144).
4. As of today, fourteen (14) counties have reported cases namely: Nairobi (243), Mombasa (113),
Kilifi (8), Mandera (8), Kiambu (8), Kajiado (3), Nakuru (2), Kitui (3), Kwale (2), Kakamega (1), Uasin
Gishu (1) Siaya (2) and Homa Bay (1), Wajir (1).
5. Two hundred and forty-six, (61 percent) of the 396 confirmed cases are local transmissions.
6. A total of 3,684 contacts have been registered, of which 2,881 of them have completed mandatory
14 days follow up and have been discharged from daily follow up. 803 contacts are under follow up.
7. Six hundred and eighty-seven contacts were traced today. One hundred and ninety-one
contacts were not traced today giving a response rate of 86 percent.
8. In the last 24 hours, 777 samples were tested across various laboratories of which 12 samples
turned positive for COVID-19. A total of 20,268 cumulative tests have so far been conducted.

1.1 Epidemiology Since 13 March 2020 when the first case was confirmed in Kenya, a total of 396 confirmed cases have been
line listed. Of these, 246 cases (61 percent) were local transmissions and 150 (39 percent) are imported
cases. The epi-curve (Figure 1) below shows both categories of populations; quarantine individuals in
Nairobi (majority being asymptomatic) and within the community. Mandatory quarantine was instituted on
25 March 2020 with testing of all quarantined people starting on 29 March 2020. Figure 2 shows cumulative
caseload. Figure 3 shows number of samples tested by date indicating the positive and negative results.
Laboratory test rate currently stands at 426 samples per 1,000,000 people.

1.2 Distribution of Confirmed COVID-19 Cases by Presentation
Of the 396 confirmed cases, 116 cases (29 percent) presented with symptoms (Figure 4). Fever (53 percent)
and cough (52 percent) were predominant presenting symptoms (Figure 5).

1.4 Age and Sex Distribution of COVID Confirmed Cases and Deaths
Two hundred and twenty-three (56 percent) are males and 173 (44 percent) are females. Most cases; 101,
are in the age group of 30-39 years. Figure 6 below shows age and sex distribution of COVID-19 cases.
Seventeen deaths have been reported so far, 15 being male and 2 were female (Figure 7).

Classification
Of the 396 cases, 243 (61 percent) are from Nairobi County followed by Mombasa County with 106 (29
percent) as shown in Figure 8.

1.7 Contact Follow-Up per Case since Tested Positive One thousand nine hundred and sixty-one contacts were registered for Cases 1-82, 41 (2 percent) of these contacts tested positive for COVID-19 while 1,920
completed the 14 days follow and were discharged from follow up. Figures 10 and 11 shows status of contact tracing for case 183 - 384. Cases 385-396 (new
cases) contact listing is ongoing.

1.8 Status of Contract Tracing as at Today
Of the 803 contacts under follow up 687 (86 percent) were followed up today. A total of 191 contacts were not reached today across the affected counties: Nairobi
(161) and Kiambu (3) Mombasa (27). Figures 11 and 12 show status of contacting tracing today for Cases 184 – 384.

2.0 KEY ACTIONS
2.1 Coordination ➢ The National Emergency Response Committee continues to regularly meet.
➢ The Public Health Emergency Operations Centre Incident Management Team (IMT) and the WHO IMT
both continue to regularly meet.
2.2 Case Management and Infection Prevention & Control ➢ Fifteen more cases have recovered, raising the total number of recoveries and discharges for COVID-
19 to 144.
➢ County level case management and IPC trainings ongoing across three counties with WHO and ECHO
support 120 HCW completed training in Migori Nakuru and Uasin Gishu County.
➢ The following health facilties continue to provide isolation services for confirmed COVID-19 cases :
o Nairobi: Kenyatta National Hospital, Mbagathi County Hospital, Nairobi Hospital, Aga Khan
University Hospital, MP Shah Hospital, Avenue Hospital and Kenyatta University Teaching
Referral and Research Hospital
o Mombasa: Mombasa County Referral Hospital, Aga Khan Hospital, Pandya Hospital and
Premier Hospital.
o Nakuru : Nakuru County Referral Hospital
o Mandera : Mandera County Referral Hospital
o Siaya: Bondo County Referral Hospital
o Kilifi: Kilifi Wananchi Hospital, Njibana Sub – County Hospital
o Homa Bay: Malela Isolation and Treatment Centre
o Kajiado: Ole Kasasi Health Centre
2.3 Surveillance and laboratory and point of Entry ➢ Mass testing is ongoing targeting high risk areas including health care workers.
➢ Cumulative 20,268 persons have been tested so far with 396 cases testing positive (2 percent positivity
rate).
2.4 Risk Communication ➢ Bulk messaging
➢ Interactive voice response (IVR) The Safaricom supported system was manned by 50 dedicated agents.
The IVR Hits was 25,789 with 12,565 users going through the complete menu interactions. IVR Calls
were 2,608 and 2,454 answered. COVID 19 interactions. The members of the public who accessed
information through USSD *719# was 165,000. Calls were transferred as follows: 85 calls was
transferred to NASCOP and 9 calls to KRCS, of these 35 calls were captured as critical. Most callers
were males 75 percent, most calls came from Nairobi, Mombasa and Kiambu among other counties.
The main symptoms reported by callers were: cough, fever and headache among others.
➢ Main stream media: Public awareness on COVID-19 is ongoing through television, radio and print media
is ongoing.
2.5 Community Engagement ➢ Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS)
➢ Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) working Group meeting was held where different
actors provided status updates and discussed coordination of various interventions.
➢ KRC and MOH have trained 448 health care workers and key stakeholders on Psychological First Aid
(PFA) across 19 Counties. support is needed to roll out the PFA training in the Counties and across
sectors.
➢ Tele counselling is ongoing through the free toll line 1199. So far 155 people have been assisted with
majority (60 percent) being men 21-40 years.

➢ Three webinars on Anxiety, Trauma and Mental Health for children have been conducted by Kenya
Medical Association (KMA) reaching 900 healthcare frontline responders.
➢ The WHO is providing technical support to do the following; improve coordination of MPHSS at National
and County level; Build capacity to handle current MHPSS demands especially from quarantine centres;
Strengthen collaboration and intersectoral referral pathways; Support for development and
dissemination of timely MHPSS information; Build capacity for protection of metal health of all frontline
responders and develop and mainstream interventions for supporting individuals, families and
communities.
➢ Health Promotion
➢ Health Promotion working group meeting was held bringing together various partners. The meeting
received status updates from 23 out of 47 Counties on various health promotion activities.
➢ Eighty-seven prison wardens were sensitised in Busia, Laikipia and Bungoma, 12000 Boda Boda

in the event of large-scale outbreak

4.0 NEXT STEPS
➢ Training of additional healthcare workers at the sub – national level on COVID-19.
➢ Activation of sub – national response and contact tracing teams, especially in Nairobi County, to ensure
decentralization of response activities.
