Main IdeasDifferent types of data displays are
appropriate for different situations. The choice reflects the purpose.
Displays of data can be analyzed tolook for patterns, make predictions, make comparisons, draw inferences, and make decisions.

OrganizationSequence of using data
Tally Charts & Concrete graphs made from real objects
Recording numerals in frequency tables or charts
Graphs made with pictures ofreal objects (picture graphs) to symbols (pictographs)
Abstract graphs:bar graphs, broken-line graphs, stem-and-leaf plots

Scatter PlotsAre designed to showtrends and to indicate
whether there is arelationship between twovariables.
Independent: variable that changes independentlyDependent: Variable that is affected by or depends
on this change

Common Errors &Misconceptions
Aligning Categories and symbols/pictures/objects (spacing)
Using different symbols that are not the same size
Irregular Scales (data values not correct)
Omitting repeated values and incorrect order of values in stem-and-leaf plots
Omitting categories when there is no data for it
Axes is in reverse order
Number the wrong axis (upper grades: independent variable goes onthe horizontal axis)
Not including 0 on Axes
In circle graphs, the percent does not add to 100%

AssessmentAssess students ability to read a graph, drawinferences or conclusions, and creation allseparately.
This will allow you to see areas of strengthand areas in need of more support.
Leave room for exploration not always tellingwhat graph to use but encourage studentsthrough questioning and investigating tochoose graphs based on their own reasoning.
