Learning Goals
Compare two characteristics using a scatter plot
Determine whether or not the scatter plot suggests a relationship between the two different things exists
DID YOU KNOW…
Happier people tend to have a higher pain tolerance than unhappy people
Fit people have a better immune system and lazy people Left handed people tend to reach puberty 4-5 months later than
normal Left handed people make especially good baseball players, tennis
players, swimmers, and boxers. Almost 40% of the top tennis players are lefties (Miss Whiting included…)
–this stat is more impressive than it seems because left-handed people only make up between 5-10% of the population
Can you think of any more?
Arm Span and Height
A correlation exists between arm span and height.
APE Index Measures the ratio of a persons
arm span relative to their height http://www.ape-index.com/
RelationshipsAn arm span greater than height is thought to be advantageous in some sports such as swimming, as longer arms may give greater propulsion. It is also better for basketball players because they can have a higher reach around their taller opponentsA shorter arm span is useful for weight lifters as they don’t have to lift the weight as high. Can you think of an other situation where having a long or short arm span is advantageous?
Class Investigation
We are going to test this theory to determine if a relationship between arm span and height truly does exist…
First, you will all get into partners Then, you will measure the height of each person in cm and record
this measurement. Next, you will measure the length of each persons arm span in cm
and record this measurement You will then record this measurement on the smartboard for
everyone to see Finally, each person will graph this information in a scatter plot and
compare the trend lines of height and arm span to see if a relationship exists
