Project Details

Under the 1990 Clean Air Act, power companies operating fossil fuel plants were required to reduce total annual sulfur dioxide emissions by about two-thirds by the year 2000. Part of Ameren’s ongoing efforts to reduce emissions involves the installation of wet flue gas desulphurization scrubbers at its coal-fired power plants in Illinois and Missouri.

MC Industrial was awarded the Portage des Sioux project in August 2006. We are installing two new wet gas scrubbers and all the associated equipment and ductwork. In addition MC Industrial is installing a new Reactant Preparation facility which will include a truck unloading facility, conveyors, limestone reclaim system, storage silos, 2 ball mills, two limestone slurry tanks, and associated equipment used to grind and prepare limestone slurry.

This slurry is pumped to the absorbers where it gets sprayed into the combustion gas stream. The slurry reacts with the SO2 to form calcium sulfate, or gypsum, a non-hazardous substance that is removed from the scrubber system and pumped back to a new gypsum handling tank. From there the slurry will be pumped to holding ponds to settle out the gypsum. The water from these ponds will be transported back to the Reactant Prep Building and reused in the system.

To meet the demands for clean and treated water for the boiler and plant, MC Industrial also built a new water treatment facility at the Portage des Sioux plant. This project included erecting a 15,680 square-foot pre-engineered building and all associated piping, pumps, lab area, process equipment, and tanks. Included in this project was a new fire protection building and equipment that provides electric fire pumps as well as diesel powered pumps for a back up system. The controls for these systems were all integrated into the existing plant’s control rooms.
