RAWMAT® HDB (High Density Bentonite) is a factory pre-hydrated
sodium bentonite membrane used for the containment of fuels, oil
and other hydrocarbons, a cost effective high performance barrier
for applications both beneath tanks and within the bund.
DESPATCH QUANTITIES
• 1 Roll = 2m x 50m = 100m2 - Average Weight = 860 kg Approximate Roll Dimensions = 800mm Diameter x 2,010mm Width
• 19 Rolls (1,900m2) capacity per 20 ft Container
• 28 Rolls (2,800m2) capacity per 40 ft Road Trailer/Container
*Weight restrictions vary from country to country due to
legislation. Please obtain confirmation from Rawell on territorial
transport legislation.
HANDLING & STORAGE
• RAWMAT® HDB Type PP2 is rolled on 196mm cores. Each roll is sealed in airtight polythene film. The rolls are sheathed
in hardboard and banded prior to despatch for protection during transport and handling. Each roll has a unique batch
identification code.
• Rolls must be handled with either a 'carpet boom' attachment to a forklift or with a lifting beam, comprising a carrier
beam, chains and a spreader bar, which can be hired from Rawell. The RAWMAT® HDB Type PP2 should be stored and
handled strictly in accordance with the manufacturers instructions.
• The storage area should be dry and stable. The contractor shall ensure the RAWMAT® HDB Type PP2 or its packaging is
not damaged. Any RAWMAT® HDB Type PP2 damaged during the delivery, storage or handling should be rejected and
shall not be incorporated in the works.
• Rolls may be stacked two high in their unopened state. Rolls must be stored under cover or protected with a
weatherproof sheet. Any part used roll can be re-wrapped and can be re-used if it has been protected in plastic to
prevent moisture loss or saturation from rainfall.
INSTALLATION
All projects must be assessed on an individual basis as installation details may differ. For project specific recommendations
contact the Technical Department at Rawell. Installation may continue during light rainfall providing the backfilling process
continues until all of the RAWMAT® HDB Type PP2 is covered with the correct depth (300mm) of protective layer.
The surface onto which the RAWMAT® HDB Type PP2 is to be laid should be compacted to provide a firm smooth surface free
of all ruts, sharp objects, roots, debris, and stones larger than 10mm. The RAWMAT® HDB Type PP2 is to be placed in the
anchor trench at the top of any slope and laid parallel to the direction of that slope.

DATA SHEET
Int. Version: April 2017
The RAWMAT® HDB Type PP2 should be laid directly onto the prepared substrate with the
adjoining sheets overlapping by a minimum of 150mm. The overlaps are created by
peeling back the upper geotextile and the clay core on the first sheet of RAWMAT® HDB
Type PP2 by 150mm (to the lap line) exposing the lower geotextile. The second sheet of
RAWMAT® HDB Type PP2 is then laid onto the previously exposed geotextile and the
upper geotextile is peeled back by 150mm (to the lap line).
Apply a 2mm thick layer of RAWPASTE Mastic onto the exposed clay core and fold the
clay core and upper geotextile of the original sheet of RAWMAT® HDB Type PP2 onto the
clay core covered with RAWPASTE Mastic. Press the two sheets firmly together and fold
the upper geotextile from the second sheet of RAWMAT® HDB Type PP2 back over the top
(See detail opposite).
Great care must be taken to ensure that the correct procedure for overlapping the rolls is
followed. Under no circumstances shall the geotextile be contained within the lap.
There are to be no transverse joints on slopes. If necessary please contact Rawell's
Technical Department.
Anchor trench backfill is to be well compacted to minimise water intrusion and to prevent
the RAWMAT® HDB Type PP2 being pulled out of the anchor trench. Placement and
compaction of anchor trench should take place before any backfilling/covering is started
over the main body of the RAWMAT® HDB Type PP2.
At no time during installation of the RAWMAT® HDB Type PP2 or placing of the protective
layer will plant or equipment be permitted to travel on the unprotected surface of the
RAWMAT® HDB Type PP2. Any machinery must travel on the protective layer. In the event
of damage occurring to the RAWMAT® HDB Type PP2 the damaged area should be
overlain by a patch of the RAWMAT® HDB Type PP2 at least 150mm larger in all directions
than the damaged area with the lower geotextile removed. The area to be overlain should
be cleared of all debris and swept clean. The upper geotextile should be peeled off the
damaged membrane and RAWPASTE Mastic applied across the exposed bentonite core,
the patch is then placed in position with the clay core onto the prepared mastic surface
over the damaged area. The upper geotextile of the main sheet can then be folded back
over the patch and the protective cover layer placed carefully over this repaired material.
On slopes the patch must extend up the slopes into the anchor trench. For any necessary
penetrations, such as pipes and concrete support plinths, through the RAWMAT® HDB
Type PP2 please consult Rawell's Technical Department.
As the membrane is being installed all overlaps and penetrations are being sealed, the
membrane must be covered as part of the on going installation process. Before the end of
the working day all exposed membrane must be covered with the required 300mm depth
of cover. The leading edge must be protected at the end of each day by temporarily
wrapping 200mm of membrane in polythene sheeting, this must be removed the
following day when the next sheets of membrane are installed.
Slope stability is a vital part of bund design, other options for anchoring are available.
Please contact Rawell’s Technical Department with information on crest of berm location,
slope length, slope angle and depth of cover and a design can be created on a site specific
basis utilizing Rawgrid geogrid and Rawcell cellular confinement systems.
If sealing to concrete upstands refer to RAWMAT® HDB Type PP2 Walled Bund Data Sheet
