Scenario:You want to migrate y our existing SAP ABAP sy stem to the SAP HANA databaseYour SAP release needs to be upgraded prior to migration

Use the database migration option (DMO) of the Software Update Manager (SUM):it combines SAP upgrade and database migration to SAP HANA in one tool!Benef its:

Migration steps are simplif iedSy stem update, Unicode Conv ersion, and database migration are combined in one toolBusiness downtime is reducedThe source database remains consistent, so a f ast f allback is possible

MotivationIf y ou want to migrate an existing SAP sy stem (running on anyDB) to a SAP HANA database, required steps maybe a dual-stack split, a unicode conv ersion, a database upgrade of anyDB, an upgrade of y our SAP sof tware, anda database migration to SAP HANA. The Sof tware Update Manager (SUM) includes an option that combines theupgrade with the database migration "database migration option" (DMO) f or SUM. It is sometimes ref erred to asthe one-step migration procedure, compared to the classical migration (i.e. heterogenous sy stem copy, usingSof tware Prov isioning Manager). The DMO is an inplace-migration (instead of a new installation): it upgrades and migrates the existing sy stem whilekeeping the sy stem-ID, host name, and connectiv ity settings stable.

Althought DMO is based on the "standard" SUM, a new user interf ace (UI) is used - but only f or the DMOprocedure. The UI is based on SAPUI5, so it's running in a browser, and of f ers some comf ortable f eatures likechecking the log f iles without hav ing to log on to the OS of the application serv er.The new UI is currently only av ailable f or the DMO procedure, but in the long run, it may become av ailable f orother use cases as well.

Please note that for a SAP Business Suite system based on SAP NetWeaver 7.40 (i.e. systems part ofSAP Business Suite 7 Innovations 2013), your SAP NetWeaver Hubs must be on 7.30 or higher. Walter Castagno Apr 3, 2014 5:25 PMHi Boris,v ery nice presentation!I can use DMO also without HANA as a target? For example, to perf orm a migration of ERP 6.03f rom Windows as s.o. and Oracle as db, to Linux Suse as s.o. and Oracle, with upgrade to ERP6.06 in one step?Thank y ouRegards,Walter

Walter Castagno Apr 3, 2014 5:45 PM (in response to Boris Rubarth)Ok!The possibility to not change hostname and the SID allow y ou to use the sameapplication serv er with hana, then y ou not need to buy another serv er! This is agreat solution! But is it also possible to do a real migration? I mean at the end y ou hav e thedatabase in HANA and the PAS installed in another serv er that y ou specif yduring the procedure.(then the source sy stem is only stopped, if y ou start it y ou can use it)

    Thank y ouRegards,Walter

Boris Rubarth Apr 3, 2014 5:54 PM (in response to Walter Castagno)Hi Walter, not sure if I understand y our scenario ... DMO is a real migration.Sy stem-ID is not changed, host of primary application serv er is notchanged, "only " database host is changed - and database ty pe, ofcourse :-)So y ou do not specif y the PAS serv er during the procedure, but y oustart the SUM f or DMO on the PAS host. The source sy stem does not exist af ter the migration, so it is not thesource sy stem that is stopped, but the source database that is nolonger used.I think the blog on DMO technical background is helpf ul to check thearchitecture:

Boris Rubarth Apr 3, 2014 6:55 PM (in response to WalterCastagno)Hi Walter,

Does that f it to y our concerns?Regards, Boris

DMO switches the database, but keeps theapplication serv er stablea system is a combination of a database withone (or sev eral) application serv er;"application serv er" in the sense of sof tware(instances)with DMO y ou will hav e only one applicationserv er, so only one sy stem at a time:either the new one or the oldy our scenario to hav e 2 sy stems af terwards israther a copy and an update (with migration),not a pure migration; so ev en with the classicalmigration, y ou will hav e to do a copy f irst, andthen update one of the sy stems

In the mean time, I'v e tested DMO tool successf ully !!Only one doubt: in a TechEd2013 presentation (ITM212) I saw that DMO support nZDTMaintenance capabilities but during my test, in "Adv anced parameters f or the procedure" the toolsay s that nZDT Maintenance capabilities are not supported f or database migration and then arenot used. Boris Rubarth May 14, 2014 11:05 AM (in response to Walter Castagno)Hi Walter, indeed nZDM in SUM is not av ailable f or the DMO procedure, that is why y ou hav e seenthe inf ormation on the screen: something like "nZDM not supported".

Please note that we distinguish between nZDM (near Zero Downtime Maintenance) whichis an option f or SUM and nZDT (near Zero Downtime) which is a serv ice of f ering (seeSCN document). The slide in ITM212 explained the nZDT approach, which may be combined with DMO,but this does not mean that "with nZDT, nZDM in SUM is used f or DMO".For DMO, we hope to of f er a similar approach like nZDM f or SUM in the f uture - staytuned.Best regards, Boris

Background: the nZDM option is only v isible when choosing the preconf igurationmode "Adv anced", see blog Settings to activ ate downtime minimizationcapabilities in SUM - but f or DMO, the option is not of f ered, so when choosingmode Adv anced, a text is display ed to explain that nZDM not supported with DMO

And I am not sure what happens if HANA-optimizedobjects (e.g. Inf o-Cubes) are ov erwritten by change requests originated f rom a BWsy stem on a non-HANA database.Regards, Boris

Luis M Carranza Sep 12, 2014 7:28 PMWe are running the DMO option of SUM to upgrade our BW sy stem to 7.4 and migrate it to HANADB. We are using SUM v ersion SP11We are close to being the downtime portion of the process, but during the initial phase weselected the option to "compare content of ALL tables (target v s Source DB). We now realizedthat may be was not a good selection since this could add too much time to the process andmay be adding some room f or errors there. The database is not too big, it is only 400 GB in thelegacy DB.Is there a way to change that option to "Do not compare table contents" without resetting theupgrade and repeat f rom the beginning? As I said we are close to beginning of downtime, so wedo not want to repeat the whole process.ThanksLuis Carranza

    Ravindranath Gangampalli Sep 13, 2014 11:55 AM (in response to Luis M Carranza)Hi ,

Please see Phases behind DMO R3load parallel export/import during UPTIME andDOWNTIME to target HANA DB

That explains uptime and downtime phases which includes table count. as f ar as i knowthere is no option in DMO to change the table compare option, y ou can only changenumber of parallel process during the DMO runtime.

Boris Rubarth Sep 16, 2014 4:50 PM (in response to Luis M Carranza)Hi Luis, just to conf irm what Rav indranath has already written: there is no way to change thetable compare option. "Compare ALL tables" should only be used f or a test run.Regards, Boris

Ravindranath Gangampalli Sep 13, 2014 12:01 PMDear Boris RubarthI hav e come across a situation where DMO hangs when i click on any of the upcoming phases . Iwas try ing to see how many current steps remaining in current phase and by mistake when iclicked on one the steps which din't f inish , DMO activ ated check mark until that phase and stopsthere. I had to restart DMO and continue f rom the last phase.

Normally we can click on phases and scroll down in SWPM, but in DMO case it is notworking. Is it normal , Please adviseThanks,GR

Boris Rubarth Sep 15, 2014 9:49 AM (in response to Ravindranath Gangampalli)Dear GR,where is that phase list (y ou hav e clicked into) located in the UI?The phase list on the right hand side shows the phases of the current roadmap step, anda click on a phase name will open the respectiv e log, if existing. But the DMO run willthen not stop at this phase. The Utilities / breakpoint menu shows the phaselist as well (f or all roadmap steps).Marking the checkbox f or a phase creates a breakpoint. When the phase is reached y oucan simply continue the procedure, using the continue option on the UI.Regards, Boris

Ravindranath Gangampalli Sep 15, 2014 10:19 AM (in response to Boris Rubarth)Dear Boris,Thanks f or responding.Yes, I am talking about the phase list which is located in right hand side of theUI. I did not set any break points during the migration. It happened to me twotimes during the migration, when ev er i clicked on one of the phases in phaselist (which is not y et f inished) DMO puts a check mark on all the phases till theone phase that i clicked and it stops there. Once i reboot DMO i can continuef rom the Original phase it was running. Thanks,GR

Boris Rubarth Sep 15, 2014 1:08 PM (in response to Ravindranath Gangampalli)Dear GR,our guess is that the click in the phase list could hav e stopped theautomatic ref resh of the UI (not the run itself ), and a manual browserref resh (F5) may hav e solv ed the issue.Regards, Boris

Boris Rubarth Oct 28, 2014 11:06 AM (in response to Ravindranath Gangampalli)Dear GR,the only timeout that will happen is on the browser UI, but the SUM process will not stop.(Ev en if the process would be stopped by any unf oreseen ev ent/manual action, thebrowser ref resh restarts the SUM at the prev ious point.)Regards, Boris

Luis M Carranza Nov 5, 2014 1:22 AMWe perf ormed an Upgrade and HANA Migration of our BW sy stem f rom BW 7.3SPS 8 to BW 7.4 SPS7 using the SUM/DMO Option.

I just realized that the Activ ation Queue tables of ALL DSOs/BI?/A40 exist in the HANA Database but does not exist in theABAP Data Dictionary.Well actually it looks like they exist in the ABAP Dictionary but If I am going to SE11 and try todisplay one of those tables (or f rom RSA1 try ing to display the Activ ation Queue table f or aDSO) I get the message that table does not exist. It looks like there is not entry in the tableDDTYPES f or this table and that is why SE11 reports that the table does not exist.

Is this normal? The DSO loads and activ ation process are running OK but I am justwondering about this situation.
