Why use database• Databases can store very large numbers of records efficiently
• It is very quick and easy to find information.
• It is easy to add new data and to edit or delete old data.
• Data can be searched easily , eg 'find all Ford cars'.
• Data can be sorted easily, for example into 'date first registered' order.
• Data can be imported into other applications,
• More than one person can access the same database at the same time -multi-access.
• Security may be better than in paper files
Types of databases• RELATIONAL DATABASE
• DOCUMENT ORIENTED DATABASE
• EMBEDDED DATABASE
• GRAPH DATABASE
• HYPERTEXT DATABASES
• OPERATIONAL DATABASE
• DISTRIBUTED DATABASE
• FLAT FILES
A relational database is an organized storage of data in tables.Tables consist of rows and
columns. The columns constitute the attributes. The rows constitute tuples. relational data model.
It is designed for storing, retrieving and managing document oriented information.
It does not require that every record contain the same field
NoSQL database
The databases consist of data developed
by individual end users.
Examples of these are collection of
documents, spreadsheets, presentations,
multimedia and other files
It is integrated with application software
A graph database is a database that uses graph
structures with nodes, edges, and properties to
represent and store data.
Every element contains a direct pointer to its
adjacent elements.
Hypertext databases are particularly useful for organizing large amount of disparate information
Hypertext is text displayed on a computer display or other electronic devices with references to other text which the reader can immediately access..
For example they are useful for maintaining online encyclopaedias
Operational databases are used to store the detail operations of an organization.
It distinctly represents different operations within an organization.
A database in which storage devices are not all attached to a common processing unit.
It may be stored in multiple computers located in the same physical location , or,
May be dispersed over a network of interconnected computer
The flat file style of database are ideal for all small amounts of data that needs to be human readable or edited by hand
