A Comprehensive Data Analysis of the Modern Secondary School Fred Cohen & Tammy Mazza
The key to growth is knowing where you are now. What tools are currently available to measure secondary school performance, and how can teachers and administrators measure year to year change? A good analysis should go beyond Regents exams to also measure Advanced Placement exam performance (and growth) and also measure college success. This presentation will delineate what should be included in a state of the art data analysis of the modern secondary school.
1B – Broadway 2
2018-19 End of the Year Data Reporting : Best Practices in Verifying & Certifying Year-End Data Charlie King, Bill Richie & Lisa Zwerling
The task of accurately reporting all of the data that is required at the end of each school year can be a daunting task for even the most seasoned District Data Coordinator. This presentation is specifically designed to assist District Data Coordinators / Administrators with the accurate and timely submission of year-end data. Topics discussed will include: which reports to review, best practices for reporting and verifying graduates, understanding deadlines/timelines, as well as year-end special education data reporting requirements. Combining Academic, Behavioral & Cultural Student Data to Predict Outcomes Illuminate Education
Every system is exquisitely designed to produce the results it gets. Schools systems are no different. The predictability of the achievement of historically under-served subgroups has been in place through countless changes in educational trends, legislative efforts and dedicated work of educational experts. Disrupting the predictability necessitates that the system producing those outcomes needs to change. Intentional shifts in the both the data that is collected in schools and the way in which that data is analyzed and acted upon can result in more equitable outcomes for our students. Learn about how school districts are changing the way data is used to lead to a positive disruption in the predictability of their student outcomes.

Shrinking the Sprawl: Data Integration in K-12 Chris Violetti & Dr. Madalyn Romano
In school districts there are potentially dozens of applications that share the same data which may come from multiple data sources. In this session you will learn how this sprawl can be brought under control to automatically and securely move data, saving time and money to free more of these resources to be applied to educating children. Securely moving data is also increasingly important as identity theft is an ever growing problem.

Using Multiple Measures to Evaluate Student Performance during Data Team Meetings Andrea Tamarazio
We all know that districts need to hold Data Team Meetings to discuss student achievement and gaps in learning, but many districts ask where do we find the time to meet with the teachers when they are being asked to attend so many other forms of staff development throughout the day and school year. Throughout this presentation, participants will have the opportunity to see how a district is holding data team meetings every month and during those meetings use a variety of measures (NYS Assessments, Third Party Assessments, Teacher Created Interim Assessments and Unit Assessments) to evaluate student performance and determine services needed to support student growth and discuss learning gaps.
2D – Broadway 4
Change Agents in an On Demand World: Transforming What I Know to How I Do David Leis
In a world where Data is the new oil, how do we harness the potential of the information at our fingertips and put it into the hands of the professionals that can make the most impact? This session will outline the exploration of: Collecting Data: (Assessment, grading, student evidence), Handling vs. Consuming Data: (collection tools, visualizations, action planning), Implementing Action: ( Skills based intervention, instructional strategy groups) and The Revist: (Measuring the impact of action).
We will dive into the various opportunities for collecting data in the classroom setting and explore how, as educators, we can harness that data to make actionable decisions and adjustments within the confines of the daily routine of Math and ELA blocks, lunch, assemblies..etc.
Next, we will discuss the importance of establishing a culture of transforming our effort from being data handlers to data consumers. As educators too much effort is spent on gathering data when we have the technology to redirect that effort into designing skill based strategies and differentiated instruction.
Lastly, we will explore the structures and capacity required to support this framework. Commitment, Budget, resources, culture, relationships and partnering.

Learner-Centered Test Prep Protocols Jennifer A. Borgioli
Feedback loops in NYS education has created a tension between the Opt Out movement and the need for system-wide data on student mastery of the NYS learning standards. The manifestation of this tension can be seen in how schools approach the notion of “test prep.” Parents, teachers, and students report their frustration with test prep books but the nature of large-scale testing means that some degree of test prep is essential to ensure students are successful. This session for leaders and practitioners will offer a way to negotiate that tension through learner-centered test prep protocols. The session will:
• Explore the philosophical and pedagogical differences between learner-centered test prep and test prep done by route,
• Identify the role of stereotype threat and confirmation bias and ways to minimize it,
• Offer a structure for student-centered action research that can minimize student anxiety, and
• Access to language to help students and parents understand learner-centered test prep.

The Privacy Risk Unfolding: Implementing Educational Technology Solutions Data Ethics
For many local education agencies (LEAs), the implementation of an educational technology solution may involve multiple departments. The process may start with the legal and finance departments vetting the procurement of the product. Once purchased, the Information Technology Department may be tasked with not only installing the application and handling initial security hiccups but managing the communication of the deployment of the new tool to schools. The cascading of communication and impact continue until use is sustained. The process of implementation could also fall on the shoulders of one or two individuals who working in small school systems where they are the finance, IT and legal departments such that roles don’t fall on a team, but on an individual that works as part of a small team of experts to carry out the implementation processes. Regardless of the size of an LEA, the implementation of an educational technology solution is one of many projects that are taking place in a school system. Often, a new initiative represents a project that is in addition to, rather than in place of, the day-to-day demands that are made of LEA professionals.

The nature of recency bias is such that it feels like the tension and noise around state-wide testing in NYS began with the adoption of Common Core and APPR. This session will trace the long history of assessment in New York State and explore the policy frameworks and general sentiments around the various decision points. Items and prompts for historical Regents exams and the “PineappleGate” question will be situated within the context of their era. Participants will have the opportunity to explore the long history of testing in our state and consider the role of assessment as we strive to create, “a system of free common schools wherein all the children of this state may be educated.”
