Yemen While our news deals with Syria and the great need for Syrian refugees to find places of safety and rest, the small Arab republic of Yemen is embroiled in civil war. The conflict is fuelled by the involvement of Iran and Saudi Arabia. Both Al Qaida and ISIS are active in Yemen. Eighty percent of the people in Yemen are dependent on food aid. In 1973 the North Yemen Government asked Mother Teresa to open a house in Aden. The Missionaries of Charity opened an aged care facility and a home for the disabled. In 1998 three nuns were murdered. On 4th March this year four nuns and eight residents of the home were killed. May they rest in peace. The only Catholic priest in Yemen was taken away by the attackers and has not been seen since.

Sr Monna Cowburn csb Brigidine Sister Monna died on Wednesday night. When I first came to Brigidine in 2008, Monna used to come down a couple of times a week to chat with me about all things Brigidine. I learnt so much from her about Brigidine culture and history. As a twelve year old she came to board at Brigidine Randwick; I think during the war years. With school days over, she entered the Brigidine Sisters here at Randwick. She showed me her photo album and I saw the beautiful young woman who went on to become a very competent teacher and administrator of schools. She stopped coming down to see me about 2010 when Alzheimer's disease started to take hold. She dealt with her diminishment from that disease with the reality of someone of great faith and easily allowed herself to be moved from her independent living unit into Brigidine House and then not too long ago into the Gertrude Abbott home. On Wednesday three Brigidine Sisters of the Provincial leadership team came down to look at the latest developments in the plans for the refurbishment of the school. The Sisters show great interest. My heart goes out to these wonderful women, hardly young themselves, who care for each other as elderly sisters. Society and the Church are entirely different from when our Sisters became Brigidine nuns. The Sisters thanked me for including them in the discussion of the work of the architects and I said that I wanted them to feel the hope of seeing the school thriving, our teachers taking forward Brigidine values and the families of the eastern suburbs continuing to choose an education for their daughters immersed in Brigidine history and culture. it is truly said of the great women of all religious congregations..."the future is not for us the future is because of us" Those of us working here at Randwick are indeed grateful for all we have received from the likes of Sr Monna Cowburn. The House of Welcome The House of Welcome is a transitional housing provider for community based asylum seekers in NSW. It receives no Government assistance and is a project of St Francis Social Services. If you would like to be involved in helping asylum seekers then go to www.houseofwelcome.com.au. You will find that you can choose to volunteer, educate and advocate, make a regular donation and give material aid. It is usual for me at this stage of Lent to see that what is really important in the Christian life is to open your mind and heart to what is happening in the world. Consumerism drives us inward to egocentric desires and nobody completely frees themselves from these. The Holy Spirit compels us to look outward and to enlarge our circle of meaning. Seeing our human existence in all its pain and wonder, makes Jesus our representative as he walks into Good Friday accepting the consequence of His humanness in the society in which he lived. May Brigid bless the house wherein you dwell.

ENGLISH DEPARTMENT NEWS The English Department celebrated International Women’s Day on Monday 7 March with a visit from the Hon. Susan Ryan, Age Discrimination Commissioner and Brigidine Maroubra old girl. Year 11 students are studying the changing roles and representations of women across the second half of the twentieth century to today. Students engaged in teacher led workshops called ‘Protest 101’ in which students made protest signs reminiscent of the Women’s Liberation marches of the 60s and 70s, created magazines from across the period, discovered the power of having their own voice, looked at proto feminism in the films of the 1950s, explored the contents of Herstory through women’s handbags, and compared Aretha Franklin’s ‘RESPECT’ to Meghan Trainor’s ‘Dear Future Husband’.

In their evaluations of the day students appreciated the interactive nature of the activities, as well as

the focus on creative thinking and writing. Many students commented that they regretted not being

able to attend all of the thoughtfully prepared activities facilitated by the teachers.

Thank you to all the students who participated, especially those students who dressed up for the

day, as well as all their teachers and the Art Department for letting us use their rooms and supplies.

Below is an excerpt from Susan Ryan’s speech to Year 11:

“Of St Brigid herself, the 5th century saint and patron saint of Ireland not a lot is known in historical terms, but I remember the stories we were told about her. The particular theme that stayed with me up to the present is this: St Brigid was the equal of St Patrick, she worked with him in partnership, and was as important as he was to the people of Ireland in her work for the poor and the spreading of Catholic faith.

Was that story of Brigid's equality with Patrick the beginning of my personal version of second wave feminism?

Perhaps. Certainly, growing up in the 1940s and 50s, going to a girl’s school run entirely by women of determination and personality I was aware from my earliest days of two things:

First, women were as clever, energetic and as knowledgeable as men.

And second, despite this intellectual and personal equality, society at large and the Church placed women in an inferior position and fought hard to keep us there …

So, the real life social and economic environment which bred second wave feminism was like this:

Most girls did not finish their school education.

Most jobs, certainly those with any prospects , were closed to girls.

Marriage was usually at a young age and children followed fast upon, as there was little birth control available.

Subsidised child care did not exist, and mothers who found some private care for their children so they could work were looked on with hostility and contempt. And, in any event, in most jobs, including the public service, a woman had to resign when she married. Hence no superannuation, no future job prospects. In general the whole of society supported these limitations on the lives of women.

Now, here we are on the eve of International Women Day in 2016.

We can look about and see so many changes in the lives of women, compared with my first year out of school, 1960, before the advent of the Second Wave. Most are changes for the better. There is no area of work, no profession closed to women. Governments understand that they must support families, that they must strengthen laws that protect women and their rights.

But you would know well, we still face many challenges. The gender pay gap is still large and not closing. The scourge of domestic violence ruins and indeed ends the lives of women and children at a terrible rate. Most jobs under the law are available, but lack of flexibility in the work place still forces women out …

So, is it time for third wave feminism, your generation’s challenge, to build on what the second wave achieved and take us forward to our goals of equality, respect and inclusion?

I hope so and I wish you well.”

The English Department would like to thank Susan Ryan for her generous participation in the day.

Are you interested in a career in Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science and FIJI?

If yes, we have designed the trip for you in FIJI!

You will learn fundamental HSC Biology concepts and scientific research skills transferable for any science in a fun, dynamic and practical manner with Oxford University Professors and your

Brigidine Science Teachers!

Science is heading to FIJI in July 2017 to join an Oxford University Professor and research group in Operation Wallacea. It is not for the faint of heart. There will be no cabins or any star resort. Operation Wallacea is a network of academics from European and North American universities, who design and implement biodiversity and conservation management research expeditions. Research is supported by students who join the programme, to strengthen their CV or resume or collect data for a dissertation or thesis. Academics benefit from funding for high quality fieldwork enabling them to publish papers in peer reviewed journals.

If interested, contact Ms Schneider as soon as possible as spaces are filling up fast. There will be a meeting Monday at the start of lunch in D02 to discuss fundraising plans and overall trip planning.

BRIGIDINE GIRLS AND SURF LIFE SAVING Congratulations to Chloe Walker in Year Eight who has been named the Sydney Life Saving Young Lifesaver of the Year. Chloe will go on to represent Sydney at the state level.

Also from Year Eight are Tara Mintoff and Lara Thompson who, because of the calm way they responded to the need to rescue a girl last year, have been made the face of the latest fundraising campaign for the Surf Life Saving Foundation. The flyer showing Tara and Lara can be found at https://www.slsfoundation.com.au/nippers.aspx

2016 SCHOOL LEADERSHIP PROGRAM AT PARLIAMENT HOUSE

“The standard you walk past is the standard you set.”

-His Excellency the General Honourable David Hurley

Leadership is an important part of our culture at Brigidine. Often, we dismiss leadership as the duty of one person who is appointed an ‘important’ position, however we must realise that leadership is not recognised as a physical act or a label. It is, however, a quality that anyone can possess if they choose to do so.

On Tuesday the 15th of March, two Year 11 students had the wonderful opportunity to attend the 2016 School Leadership Program in Parliament House, Sydney. The day focused around the idea of giving our generation the opportunity to inherit a better understanding of how leadership works in the state and federal government of Australia.

Maeve and I had the pleasure of meeting and conferring with Mr Bruce Notley-Smith and other members of parliament, Mr Mike Baird, and His Excellency the General Honourable David Hurley, the Governor of New South Wales. With the enjoyable company of fellow year 11 and 12 school leaders from the state, we heard stories of leadership that no doubt inspired us to carry out acts of leadership ourselves.

We received first-hand advice on what makes a good leader, what leadership actually consists of, and how to encourage others to lead with ambition, passion and enthusiasm. We met students who had similar aspirations to us and who were able to provide us with insight as to how their school is lead.

The opportunity we were given is indescribable and we will be forever grateful that we were given the

chance to represent Brigidine at such a fantastic event.

Brigidine College presents Harvard's beloved blonde taking the stage by pink storm in this fun, upbeat story of self-discovery.

LEGALLY BLONDE THE MUSICAL follows the transformation of Elle Woods as she tackles stereotypes, snobbery, and scandal in pursuit of her dreams. This action-packed musical explodes on the stage with memorable songs and dynamic dances. Audiences will be transported from the sorority house to the halls of justice with Broadway's brightest new heroine (and of course, her Chihuahua, Bruiser).

Elle Woods appears to have it all. Her life is turned upside-down, however, when her boyfriend dumps her so he can start getting serious about his life and attend Harvard Law School. Determined to get him back, Elle uses her charm to get into Harvard Law. At school, she struggles with peers, professors, and Warner Huntington. With the help of Paulette and Emmett, though, Elle quickly realizes her potential and sets out to prove herself to the world. This musical is ridiculously enjoyable from start to finish.
