Japanese Sister SchoolJapanese Sister School

We farewell students and teachers from Asaka-Nishi HighSchool, our Japanese sister school as they depart theWhitsundays following their annual exchange with our school. Iwas impressed once again watching our students embrace ourguests with such a warm welcome upon arrival and throughouttheir exchange. Clearly this is an event our students lookforward to as much as our guests and is an exciting part of ourschools tradition.

Cultural exchanges greatly enrich our lives and enable us togain more insight, tolerance and understanding of the diversityof cultures in our society. I believe that this event can onlystrengthen the development of our students in preparing themas lifelong learners.

Our cultural program continues to strengthen with increasingnumbers of students selecting to engage in the electivelanguage program at Proserpine State High School withJapanese being offered in the 2020 Year 11 subject selection. In addition to our school based program, a second juniorcultural exchange has been planned and will be placed forexpressions of interest for our current Year 8 and Year 9students in the near future. The additional cultural trip to Japancomplements our existing senior cultural/ski trip occurring inDecember 2020/January 2021.

Thank you to organising teachers for leading the coordination ofthe exchange for our Japanese guests. To our host families, mysincerest appreciation to you for opening up your homes andcaring for our guests during their stay. I appreciated hearingabout the personal stories from this recent visit at the farewelldinner and the enjoyment hosting a student brought to manyfamilies.

Parent and Community EngagementParent and Community Engagement

Following our recent Parent Forum it has become evident thatparents and caregivers are actively seeking resources to assistthem in supporting their children through the various stages ofschooling. The two following resources can be accessed fromthe Queensland Government website highlighting elements ofthe Parent and Community Engagement Framework. Theframework aims to strengthen engagement between students, teachers, parents, support staff and the community.

STYMIE – Anti-Bullying ProgramSTYMIE – Anti-Bullying Program

Proserpine State High Schoolhas implemented the STYMIEProgram across all year levelswith the focus on enablingstudents who witness bullying tosend anonymous electronicnotifications to the school. The

STYMIE resource is now promoted as a system to report anybehaviour or incidents that could cause harm to anotherperson in our school.

Parents can also complete notifications through STYMIE bysimply accessing the STYMIE site. Through the student forumswe know that parents and family are the most likely pointsof contact for their children discussing incidents of bullyingtowards themselves or others. Therefore it is imperative thatparents familiarise themselves with the Stymie resource andhow easy it is to notify the school if concerns are raised athome.

School Opinion SurveySchool Opinion Survey

The annual suite of School Opinion Surveys is being conductedfrom 29 July to 23 August 2019. All families, school staff anda random sample of students will be invited to participate. We

1. Stymie allows bystanders to send anonymousnotifications to the school, about someone who theybelieve is being bullied or potential risk to someone.

2. The notification interface allows bystanders to uploadevidence like screen shots of FaceBook discussions,Snapchats, text messages or instant messageconversations and an outline of the incident(s).

3. Our school receives the Stymie Notifications in theform of an email alert.

4. The notifications are encrypted, anonymous andconfidential. Stymie does not store any information; itis merely the road upon which it travels.

“Success into Senior”“Success into Senior”

The introduction of the new senior system to Queenslandschools this year, redefines what study is required in the seniorphase of learning: new requirements for a QueenslandCertificate of Education; a new tertiary entrance admissionsystem (ATAR) and a range of new pathways through senior.Subsequently, there is a recognisable benefit in conductingformalised processes and discussions with Year 9 studentstransitioning into the senior phase of learning in Year 10.

In order to best support our Year 9 students transitioning totheir senior program, Proserpine State High School last yearimplemented “Success into Senior” conversations – 15 minutepersonal interviews with Year 9 students and their parent/guardian to discuss future curriculum choices. The humanresources required to administer 15 minute interviews toapproximately 200 students is substantial. To support theimplementation of the “Success into Senior” conversations thisyear, all Year 9 classes will close for the day on WednesdayWednesday44 SeptemberSeptember. There will be a supervisory room for studentswho need to stay at school, however, no Year 9 classes will runon the day.

Parents will be asked to book a 15 minute interview usingSOBS: https://sobs.co.au/ our online booking system. A textor email will be sent to parents when the booking systemis open. Students will attend the interview with their parents.

Together we will discuss possible study options e.g. futureuniversity study, trade direction and alternative options. Duringthe interview, students and parents will investigate the availablesubjects at Proserpine State High School and make subjectselections for 2020.

Ocean Rafting with Asaka Nishi HighOcean Rafting with Asaka Nishi High

Conditions for Ocean Rafting were perfect as the 31participants from Proserpine State High School and Asaka NishiState High School slowly arrived at Abell Point Marina. Oncethe check list was completed and everyone was ready forthe day, we had the strenuous task of selecting wet suits forsnorkelling. Our first challenge was finding a size for ThomasFoster. Boarding the boat was a bit tricky with supervision byour personal crew Tom and Tim but we managed that also. Mybiggest concern was can our visitor school all swim? We wouldfind out later in the day!

Our first stop was the Northern End of Whitehaven Beach atWhitsunday National Park where we obtained our chance to getwet and also walk up to the lookout and take photos. When welanded, the beach was pretty well covered with tourists enjoyingthe warm sun and cool ocean waves. Just like to mention thatTom scored a nice pair of sun glasses laying on the beach.Definitely ladies glasses but I didn't want him to spoil his runof good luck. Tom took our group and gave a commentary onWhitsunday National Park and it's waters featuring the makingof the 'Pirates of the Caribbean' movie filmed there. We alsohad tourists unknowingly bombing some of our photos which Ididn't mind being such a big group we were kind of intimidatingand over enthusiastic.

Next we headed towards Hazel Wood, cruising alongWhitehaven Beach past the southern point for a snorkel alongthe reef. After the crew gave the group a run down of safety wetook the plunge into the crystal blue water to receive a fantastic

glimpse of different coloured coral and a Hawk Bill Turtle havinga sleep in the coral. Thanks Francesca for finding the creatureand sharing with others. We spent 30 minutes snorkelling andlike the rest of the group started to work up a feed. Time tohead to the squeaky sands of Whitehaven Beach for somedelicious meats, salads and seafood.

Most of us ate in the boat but for those who wanted to eat onthe beach they had to beat off the bombardment of attackingseagulls. Jesse Knox has experienced this before and outsmarted the birds by placing her hat over her food. Well done! The others really had to fight for their food. Myself, I had twohelpings because I don't like seeing food go to waste, anddefinitely not going to the gulls. We had two hours before weleft and some chose to sit on the beach and enjoy the weather, others played volley ball and silly me walked to the lookout. What was I thinking? That's right I managed to get somefantastic ocean view shots. By the time I got back from my 40minute stroll, it was time to head home. We left via HamiltonIsland, behind South Molle Island, Day Dream Island and alongthe mainland back to Abell Point. We encountered dolphins onthe way back which capped off a great day of Ocean Rafting.

Thanks to all the school staff and the team at Ocean Rafting fororganising a terrific day for us all.

Japanese GardenJapanese Garden

The aim of the Japanese Garden is to build and strengthenrelationships with our Japanese sister school students. Theplanting of the trees was to encourage students to get toknow each other better and build a lasting friendship; the treesplanted will be symbolistic of the bond created over the lastweek, because like a tree, friendship needs to be nurtured andcared for.

2019 Band Tour2019 Band Tour

The Proserpine State High School ConcertBand was given the amazing opportunity togo on tour to the Atherton Tablelands inNorth Queensland earlier this term. Wevisited Malanda, Yungaburra and Athertonprimary schools, performing some of ourfavourite songs for the students, which theyseemed to enjoy just as much as we did. Theweek ended with a charity performance

alongside the Atherton State High School Band, raising fundsfor BlazeAid, a volunteer-based organisation that helps ruralareas recover after natural disasters.

When we weren’t performing, we visited the Kuranda Markets, and went on a riverboat cruise on the Barron River. On thecruise, we saw various native flora and fauna, includingfreshwater crocodiles. It was fascinating hearing about theunique history of the area we were visiting.

The tour gave us the experience of performing to newaudiences away from our local area. As well as this, it wasgreat to play with other musicians our age and make newfriends through something we have in common; our passionfor music. For our band, the camp was the opportunity tostrengthen the bonds between the junior and senior students, and create new friendships between band members. I can’tthank Mr Harries, Mrs Browne, Miss Pukallus and everyonewho helped out enough for everything they did to make thecamp possible. The 2019 Band Tour was a week toremember and I know that all the students in the band will belooking forward to the next one.

New StudentsNew Students

Since returning from the June/July vacation we have had anumber of new enrolments in Junior Secondary. I would like toextend a warm welcome to these students and their families.

Assessment PlannersAssessment Planners

Last week, all Junior Secondary students should have receivedAssessment Planners for Semester Two. These planners willprovide students and parents with an overview of allassessment items for Term 3 and Term 4. AssessmentSchedules are available on the school website and also to theleft of the newsletter under Assessment Schedules.

Behaviour & Effort IncentiveBehaviour & Effort Incentive

This week on whole school parade those students from Years7, 8 and 9 who received 100% excellent behaviour and effortratings on their Semester One reports were presented with theirgold awards. It was great to see so many Junior Secondarystudents recognised for the achievements by the whole studentbody. Over coming weeks the students in Years 7 to 9 who

have met the criteria will be presented with silver and bronzebehaviour and effort incentive awards on assemblies. TheBehaviour and Effort Incentive Program seeks to recognise andreward those students who consistently demonstrate a highstandard of behaviour and effort within the classroom setting.Awards are determined by the ratings for effort and behaviour, given to students by their teachers, at the end of each term.Awards are not based on academic achievement.

For many students it will be the second award they havereceived in 2019 however, for some students it was their firstaward for the year as a result of improved effort or behaviourwithin their classes.

Behaviour and Effort Incentive Awards are judged against thefollowing criteria:

The next round of behaviour and effort awards will be based onTerm 3 reporting so it is not too late for students, who have notyet received an award.

StymieStymie

Proserpine State High School continues to use the STYMIEProgram as one of its proactive strategies to combat any formof harmful behaviour, including bullying, that students may beexperiencing or may have witnessed. STYMIE is an anonymouswebsite where children can report this behaviour. It does thisby providing a safe space for bystander children to speak upwithout fear.

Goal SettingGoal Setting

Over the last week all students in Junior Secondary will havebeen guided by their teachers in setting individual learning goalsfor each of their subjects. Teachers will have guided studentsthrough the process of setting realistic and achievable goals.Individual goal setting has been shown to have the followingadvantages:

Classroom StationeryClassroom Stationery

A number of students continue to present to class without theequipment necessary to successfully take part in lessons. Infact, a small number of students continue to show up for classwithout any equipment. It makes it difficult for the students totake an active part in the lesson and difficult for the teacherwho then has to find equipment for the student to use. It is

• Gold – All “Excellent” ratings in behaviour and effort.

• Silver – A maximum of 2 “Very Good” ratings and allother ratings “Excellent”

• Bronze – Any combination of “Very Good” and“Excellent” ratings.

• Improves academic achievement.

• Challenge students

• Builds confidence

• Establishes long term vision

• Instils self-efficacy

Discipline Vs PunishmentDiscipline Vs Punishment

Discipline is different from punishment because it teacheschildren to learn from their mistakes rather than making themsuffer for them. In fact, imposing suffering actually shifts thefocus from the lesson that needs to be learned to who is incontrol. As a result, punishment focuses on the parent beingresponsible for controlling a child's behaviour, rather than thechild controlling his/her own behaviour, which is the focus ofdiscipline.

In Positive Discipline, Jane Nelsen offers guidelines for usingconsequences, which she calls the Four R's of consequences. These four R's actually apply to all discipline techniques, notjust natural and logical consequences. Whatever disciplinetechnique you choose, make sure it meets the following fourcriteria:

• Queensland University of Technology, Gardens Point

• University of Queensland, St Lucia

• Griffith University, Nathan

• Whenever possible, REVEALREVEAL the consequences ofmisbehaviour ahead of time so children will knowwhat to expect the next time they choose tomisbehave."If you want to ride your bike, you need to stay on thesidewalk or I'll know you've decided to put it in thegarage."Notice how the responsibility for the behaviour and itseffect are on the child rather than the parent. Canyou tell how different this sounds than if the parentsaid, "Don't go in the street or I'll take your bikeaway." First of all, this wording gives the child theidea to go in the street (See "Don't say Don't!" July1993 T.I.P.S.) then challenges the child to test therule by wording it like a power threat.

• The discipline should be logically RELATEDRELATED to themisbehaviour. Sending a child to bed or restricting achild from TV has nothing to do with riding a bike inthe street.

• Present your comments in a RESPECTFULRESPECTFUL mannerthat lets children know they have a choice about howthey behave."When I see you riding your bike in the street, I knowyou're not ready to ride it safely and need to put thebike away."

• Notice how different this sounds than,"That's it, get out of the street! I'm taking your bikeaway for the rest of the day! You could get killed outthere!"When we speak to children in disrespectful waysdisrespectful ways, they respect us less and tend to talk back at usrespect us less and tend to talk back at us

disrespectfullydisrespectfully more often. We earn others' respectearn others' respectby showing respect to themby showing respect to them firstfirst..

• Provide aProvide a REASONABLEREASONABLE solution that will allowchildren an opportunity to correct the behaviour whilethe lesson is fresh in their minds.

• "You can try to ride your bike again on the sidewalkafter lunch."

• Notice that the time limit was a matter of hours, rather than days. Always make the time limit asminimal as possible, but long enough to emphasizethe lesson. Also, notice that the correct behaviourwas presented as a choice. The parent is respectfullyrevealing the discipline again before giving the childanother chance.

• Each time the child violates the rule, increase thetime limit gradually. If you restrict children from a bikefor a week the first time, they'll spend more timedwelling on their resentment than thinking about thelesson. If they make the same mistake again, they'relikely to lose the bike for a month! Children needpractice at being good -- and we need to be honestwith ourselves and decide whether our goal is toteach positive behaviour, to show who is in power, orto get revenge.

• If any one of the Four R's is missing from thediscipline, it turns the technique into punishment, which has Four (new) R's: Resentment, Rebellion,Resentment, Rebellion,Revenge, and RetreatRevenge, and Retreat (lying, learning to not getcaught, running away). If your child reacts in any ofthese ways, review how you presented yourdiscipline. Chances are, one of the Four R's ofDiscipline was missing. But don't worry, childrenalways give us another chance to learn from ourmistakes!
