Nigel’s Natter

Hi All, I’m very proud to share this story. This week I had a group of students come to show me their work. However, they had more to share than just the final product. Each of the children was able to explain what their learning goal was and how they worked to achieve it. They talked so beautifully about how they needed to show evidence to prove they had mastered the skill and were so proud of their efforts. On top of that, they confidently answered when I asked what they thought their next learning goals should be! A lovely example of how skilled our children are as learners. FOUNDATION TRANSITION - WELCOME A very warm welcome to all the new children and their families who joined Kensington PS this week for their first transition session. The morning was very successful and the children had a great time in classrooms with their buddies. I was so thrilled to speak with many families parents who spoke so highly of our senior students. The buddies were kind, compassionate and helpful. Our senior students demonstrated how responsible they are and took their responsibility as buddies very seriously. We are looking forward to seeing our new students again on Tuesday. ASSEMBLY 2017 Another reminder that in 2017, whole school assemblies will be held on Friday afternoons. At the conclusion of each assembly the children will return to their classrooms to be dismissed for the week. CREATING RESPECTFUL AND SAFE SCHOOL COMMUNITIES Last week I shared information about the Bully Stoppers resources from DET. This week I want to expand on that by sharing the KPS Statement of Values. I encourage you to read the information below and thank you for your support in maintaining a safe and respectful school community.

KENSINGTON PRIMARY SCHOOL

STATEMENT OF VALUES for the entire school community.

PROMOTING HEALTHY, SAFE AND RESPECTFUL SCHOOL COMMUNITIES

Kensington Primary School recognises the importance of the partnership between schools and parents to support

student learning, engagement and wellbeing. We share a commitment to, and a responsibility for, ensuring inclusive,

safe and orderly environments for children and young people.

This Statement of Values sets out our behavioural expectations of all members in this school community, including

the principal, all school staff, parents, students and visitors. It respects the diversity of individuals in our school

community and addresses the shared responsibilities of all members in building safe and respectful school

communities.

Discrimination, sexual and other forms of harassment, bullying, violence, aggression and threatening behaviour are unacceptable and will not be tolerated in our school.

Our Statement of Values acknowledges that parents and school staff are strongly motivated to do their best for every child. Everyone has the right to differing opinions and views and to raise concerns, as long as we do this respectfully as a community working together.

I came across this image this week and thought it worthy of sharing. A powerful reminder that we share a very real responsibility – modelling to our children how to be respectful, honest, supportive, compassionate, inclusive and the list goes on.

UNIFORM I want to thank you for your support with ensuring children wear school uniform to school. This promotes a sense of belonging and pride in being a KPS kid! I will continue to remind the children about the importance of wearing full school uniform. CONGRATULATIONS A huge well done to Dylan S who recently won the Pan-Pacific Jiu-Jitsu championships taking home a gold medal!

Big congratulations also to the children who went on excursions this week and, according to the feedback from

teachers, did an outstanding job of representing our school.

A Champion in our Midst

Last weekend, while most of us were mulling

around, cleaning the house or going for brunch,

Dylan S was hard-at-work becoming a champion.

The Pan Pacific Jiu-Jitsu Championships were held at

The Melbourne Aquatic Centre on the 29th of

October. Dylan battled hard in 2 matches to become

the #1 Jiu-Jitsu Champion in the Junior 2

Medium/Heavy Weight Division. Ever so humble,

Dylan kept it a secret until Friday when he quietly

pulled out his Gold Medal (which is about the size of

a small child’s head). We are so proud of you!

Congratulations Dylan!

New Technology

Technology News GOOGLE APPS FOR EDUCATION (GAFE) UPDATE:

1/2F, 3/4M and 5/6R have continued to trial GAFE in the classroom over the past few weeks. As a result, the students have become much more collaborative in their work and together students from 3/4M and 5/6R have written this week’s Technology Report.

Hi Everyone! This week we have really been getting into using the Google Drive and Google Classroom. We have been getting assignments and questions from Rachel and we can basically have a lesson online! This week we completed a PMI (Plus, Minus, Interesting) on our experiences so far in the Google Suite- this is some of the results...

PLUS MINUS INTERESTING

Even though we’re using stuff online, it’s safe. You can share information with your classmates It gives me a sense of connection with classmates while on Google Drive! We can get prepared for things that we will do at school We can learn in a new way and interesting way. We can have more responsibility It is a great way to learn and edit things Being able to write comments under work Being able to share work Keeping a record of all the things we have done We get the feeling of being in high school.

It takes a while to get used to and there are a few logging on problems. I find it a bit hard to navigate around the classroom but I'm sure i’ll get the hang of it! At the start i found it hard to get myself around google classroom. It takes a while to get used to and there are a few logging on problems. Not had as much time to use it as we would have liked (starting it in Term 4- we could have started it earlier) Having limited computers

That this is a new way of learning and its FUN!!!!! I like that we got the opportunity to try it before the rest of the school. All the different set ups of the google drive are different to other learning websites I’ve seen. How it almost acts like a Facebook for kids.

I like how it is like Word, Powerpoint and Excel

We have been able to show each other's work and talk about the assignments Rachel has set for us.

We were asked to do some free-writing and submit it on the grade’s Google Classroom. These are two pieces of writing.

I am finally starting to get used to the new Google Classroom! It is a really interesting way of learning. I wonder why everyone doesn't learn this way? By Genevieve G

Typing fingers Excited voices Whirring brains I look around the slightly cramped classroom with wide eyes, there is so much to learn on this network of documents, shortcuts and pages and pages of new information. While I type this I feel excitement and adventure bubble inside of me. This Google drive interweb connects 5/6R together and gets us laughing, chatting and exploring. I can’t wait to go more deeper into this app and actually understand it all!!! By Ava. C

We have all been given our learners licence as digital citizens. We have to be responsible and show that we can be good online learners and offline. All the grades are loving the experience and the new insight to new education. From Genevieve G and Ava C

In 3-4M we have been learning to use Google Apps For Education as well and focusing on citizen. Logging on to GAFE for the first time has probably been the biggest challenge so far for me (and a few other students in 3-4M). This involved lots of patience though I think it was well worth the effort because once we were all logged in we were able to understand it properly and function it well. That is most of what 3-4M have been focusing on while using GAFE and we hope that we will soon be using it for virtual lessons and more. From Matilda D and Daniel T [-;

Art News

Dear parents,

Are you spring-cleaning the toy basket?

Clearing out ready for the festive season?

We are looking for donations of toys to support the transition of the 2017 foundation (prep) grades. We set out toys

for outside play.

We are especially interested in tea sets, all sorts of cars and trucks.

Dump trucks are a big favourite. Also sandpit toys, bucket and spades.

Please bring all toys to Linda in the HOF art room for storage over the summer break and distribution into the yard in

2017.

Thanks so much

Linda Weisser

Plantmania News

Do you have 30 mins a week to offer a hand to keep our Plantmania garden watered and

lush as the weather starts to warm up?

We are looking for parents who can spare some time either in the morning or evening to water a section of our

productive garden. The idea is to set up a roster so if you would like to help out please email me your contact details

and the day/time that you would be free to help.

This roster will be for the remainder of Term 4. We will also then look at a separate roster for the holiday period, so

keep that in mind.

Please email [email protected] if you are able to assist.

Opportunity to care for KPS chickens

during the summer holidays

Thanks to everyone who has replied. Interest is high and after only 1 day we now have enough people to look after

the chooks! It’s lovely to have so many families keen to help out, so thank you. I will be in touch with those who

have emailed me to let you know your dates in the next couple of weeks.

HOLIDAY WATERING

We need to water our garden during the summer holidays.

Please let me know if you’re able to help out.

[email protected]

The holidays will soon be here and we are setting up a roster to ensure our veggies thrive over the break. If you will

be around at any stage and could give a little time for watering please email me with your availability and contact

details before the end of November. If you are not sure about dates at this stage, that’s fine, but just let me know

you’re willing.

The children have done a wonderful job with their teachers in the garden this year and it is all looking fabulous. The

Greenies led by Liz have also been busy planting, watering and doing any garden job that needs doing. It would be

lovely to come back to a lush garden and bountiful harvest at the start of next year, so if you think you can help,

please put your hand up.

Thanks in anticipation.
