To stage an intervention, you must first recognize when an intervention isnecessary. Generally, the sooner loved ones intervene the better. An interventionbefore a serious event occurs, such as an arrest or overdose, is ideal. However, itcan be more difficult to know when to stage an intervention without a seriousevent. In these cases, a gut feeling can be very telling. If you suspect someoneneeds an intervention, you are probably right. It is time to plan an intervention if you notice any of the following from your lovedone:

Putting themselves or others in dangerHealth problems related to substance abuseLoss related to substance abuse such as loss of employment or personalrelationshipsThoughts of suicide, self-harm, or overdose

Have a loved one struggling with addiction, but don’t know where to turn for help? You can learn more about addiction treatment options by attending a Family andFriends Education and Support Group, offered weekly at all CSRI facilities.

If you are ready to stage an intervention, consult with a professionalinterventionist. An interventionist can help you plan the intervention, guide theteam, and lead the actual event. A professional interventionist can be especiallyhelpful if you suspect your loved one has a co-occurring mental health disordersuch as depression or bipolar disorder. Before staging an intervention:

Research intervention styles and talk to a professional interventionist. Thereare many different methods and strategies for staging an interventions.Choose your intervention team made up of close friends and family. Anintervention requires community support.Make a detailed plan and practice. Write out what you each plan to say.Manage expectations. First responders are specially trained people who intervene to save lives indire situations, like natural disasters or terrorist attacks. Medical and militarypersonnel, police officers, and firefighters all put their lives at risk to saveothers. The nature of a first responder’s job means that this personexperiences intense stress and sees horrific events up close, far more oftenthan an average citizen.Due to the intense, stressful job and the volume of trauma they are exposedto, first responders are at a higher risk of developing a substance abusecondition. The First Responder Lifeline is an American Addiction Centersprogram which helps first responders achieve life-long recovery. Theprogram was created with feedback from real first responders to address thispopulation’s unique needs. CSRI is proud to be part of the First ResponderLifeline.

Using MET To Improve Motivation for Treatment

Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET) is a form of therapy that helps peoplewho are ambivalent toward addiction treatment seek help. MET works best as aninitiation to a larger course of treatment. This therapy aims to evoke rapid, internally motivated change, so the individual is fully engaged in their recoveryprocess, which helps prevent relapse.People struggling with addiction may be unmotivated to seek help for manyreasons. They may not have experienced negative consequences yet, or if they hadsuffered negative consequences, they may be too discouraged to seek help.MET works well for specific types of substance abuse. People struggling withalcohol abuse or marijuana dependency appear to benefit most from METcombined with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. The process of MET appears to beless effective for people struggling with nicotine, heroin, and cocaine addiction, and among adolescents experiencing polydrug addiction and abuse.MET begins with an assessment of the new client, which uses strategies developedthrough Motivational Interviewing (MI) in a few one-hour sessions. Duringsessions, the individual sets their own goals with the guidance of a therapist whodraws on strategies developed in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), systemstheory, client-centered counseling, and social psychology persuasion.Learn more about using MET to improve outcomes for those struggling withaddiction.
