Helen Ninos was elected president of the board at its organizational meeting on January 21 st . Appointed to the board by the Franklin County Commissioners in 2006, she has previously served as Vice-President and Chairwoman of the Human Resources Committee. Ms. Ninos is employed as the Chief Operating Officer for Human Resources of the Ohio Attorney General’s Office. An attorney, she previously was Chief of Staff of the Columbus City Attorney’s Office, and Chief Operating Officer for United Way of Central Ohio. Ms. Ninos resides in Gahanna with her husband, Michael Underwood, who is also an attorney. They have three children: Patrick, Katy and Colleen. Ms. Ninos is only the fourth woman to lead the board since its creation in 1967. Other officers elected on January 21 st are Dean Fadel, Vice-President, and Galen Stover, Secretary. Helen Ninos elected board president Having completed 18 years with the agency and a total of 48 years of public service, Frank New, FCBDD’s Director of Planning, will retire at the end of the month. “I never expected to work this long,” he said. “I’m very blessed that I did.” “This is a very fine organization,” he added. “I’m grateful to have been associated with it.” Frank was familiar with FCBDD even before coming to work for the agency in 1992. As an official with the Ohio Department of Education in the 1970s and 1980s, he noticed that “one county board sort of stood out in Ohio.” “Franklin County had it together,” he recalled. “If people were doing good things, if they were on the cutting edge, it was in Franklin County.” So he was “intrigued” when, after retiring as state Director of Special Education, he was asked by then FCBDD Superintendent Steve Pleasnick to come aboard. As Director of Planning, Frank’s duties have been wide- ranging and have included overseeing relations with the agency’s collaborative partners, strategic planning, coordinating Managing for Results, emergency planning and special projects. He also headed the annual Community Star Awards program. Having completed 18 years withtheagencyanda totalof48yearsofpublic service, Frank New, FCBDD’sDirector of Planning, will retire at theendofthemonth.

“Ineverexpectedtoworkthislong,”hesaid.“I’mveryblessedthatIdid.”

“This is a very fine organization,” headded. “I’mgrateful tohavebeenassociatedwithit.”

Frank was familiar with FCBDDeven before coming to work for theagency in 1992. As an official with the Ohio Department of Education in the1970sand1980s,henoticedthat“onecountyboardsortofstoodoutinOhio.”

“Franklin County had it together,”he recalled. “If people were doinggoodthings,iftheywereonthecuttingedge,itwasinFranklinCounty.”

So he was “intrigued” when,after retiringasstateDirectorofSpecialEducation,hewasaskedby then FCBDD SuperintendentStevePleasnicktocomeaboard.

Frankbeganpublicservicein1962asa teacher for theCincinnatiPublic

Schools.Hehadearnedabachelor’sdegree in secondary education fromThomas More College where hemajoredinEnglish,FrenchandLatin.

He joined the Ohio Departmentof Education in 1968 after earninga master’s degree in educationadministration from the Universityof Cincinnati. He led the Division ofSpecial Education during challengingtimes.

In 2007, he was honored asan Ohio Pioneer in Education bythe State Board of Education. ThenSuperintendentofPublicInstructionDr.Susan Tave Zelman described Frankas “a person whose name is almost

synonymouswithspecialeducationinOhio.”

Inretirement,Franklooksforwardtospending leisure timewithhiswifeLois, daughters Kristen and Karen,son-in-lawJay,grandsonMatthewandgranddaughters Stacey, Melissa andEmily.

He plans to complete somehousehold chores including buildingcabinetsforthelaundryroom.Hewillvisit Italy in May andAfrica “at somepoint.”

WewishFranktheverybestinhiswell-deservedretirement.

FCBDD Administration staffmember Jennifer Cunningham hasbeen named one of “20 OutstandingWomenYouShouldKnow”byWSNYradio(“Sunny95”).Acelebrationwasheld on January 29th at the PolarisHiltontohonorthewomen.

Jennifer’s achievements, asnoted on the station’s web site atwww.sunny95.com, include playinga leading role in the Stephen Kingmini-series Kingdom Hospital and

Jennifer Cunningham named ‘outstanding woman’

carrying the Olympic torch throughWorthington in 1996. She is alsoa past board member of the DownSyndromeAssociationofCentralOhioandaspeakeratlocaleventstoraiseawarenessaboutthesyndrome.SheisalsoactiveinSpecialOlympics.

Commenting on the recognition,Superintendent Jed Morison said,

“This is a great honor and very welldeserved.AllofusareveryproudofJennifer.”

DSACO to present free seminar Dr.MichaelHarpoldwillsharethelatest research regarding treatmentsaimed at improving learning, memoryand speech by those with Downsyndrome at the Fawcett Center,Mondayevening,February22nd.

The presentation, titled DownSyndrome Cognition Research

– Unprecedented Progress andPromising Therapeutic Strategies, issponsored by the Down SyndromeAssociationofCentralOhio(DSACO).

Dr. Harpold is Chief ExecutiveOfficer and Chair of the Scientific AdvisoryBoardoftheDownSyndromeResearchandTreatmentFoundation.

AccordingtoJackBeatty,DirectorofServiceCoordination,“The staff have done a terrific job handling all the details of movingwhilekeepingallservicesgoing.”

Thenewbuildingoffersseveraladvantagesovertheoldone.The offices are more spacious and modern. Free parking is abundant.Thelocationisnextto1600WatermarkDrive,whichwillsoonhouseFCBDD’sServiceCoordinationDepartment.

ThenewMid-OhioFoodBankat3960BrookhamDriveinGroveCity.

Operation Feed to begin At last the Mid-Ohio Food Bankhas a building large enough for itsmission! The new headquarters areat3960BrookhamDriveinGroveCityjustoffI-71South.

To help fill the food bank, FCBDD will begin our Operation Feedcampaign on Monday, February 1st.ThecampaignwillcontinueuntilFriday,March6th.

The2009campaignraisedarecordamountofmeals(4.5million).FCBDDalso raised a record amount $25,277andover6,800poundsoffood.

The goal for 2010 is to provideenough food and dollars for 50,000meals.Withintheagency,departmentsandbuildingsarevyingforatravelingtrophy for overall winner. The

TransportationDepartmentsponsorsa‘GoldenCrockpot’awardandtheLivingSkillsCenters’created theirown ‘IronSkillet’award.

FCBDD’sAction Plan for 2010 was approvedbytheboardatitsregularmeetingonJanuary21st.TheplanhadbeenthesubjectofapublichearingonDecember7th.

PreparationoftheplanwasoverseenbyFrankNew,FCBDD’sDirectorofPlanning.Henotedtheplanoutlinesprojectedneeds,goalsandstrategiesforthecomingyear.Outcomemeasuresarealsoincluded.

The2010FranklinCountySpecialOlympics Bowling Season kicked offJanuary13th.Withnearly200bowlersthisyear,thesportremainsextremelypopular among Special Olympicsathletes.

Withthehelpofstaffandvolunteers,the athletes are working to improvetheir bowling abilities and teamworkskillswhileexperiencingsomefriendlycompetitionalongtheway.

“Myfavoritepartaboutthebowlingteamisgettingthemedalsfordoingagoodjob. It just feelsawesome,”saidbowlerEvanIchrist,whohasbeenontheSpecialOlympicsbowlingteamforfive years.

Ray Dillon, who has also bowled for five years, said the best part aboutthesportgoesbeyondthecompetitiveaspect.

“I love coming here and meeting new people,” he said. “I alwaysmakenewfriendsalongtheway.”

BowlerspracticeonWednesdayorFridayafternoonsthroughmidMarch.They thenshowtheirskillsat theArea6meetonMarch20th.After that, the top bowlers from each area will go onto the sectionaltournamentApril17thwheretheywillcompetetoearnachancetogototheSummerGamesinJune.
