FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK Hello, Talofa lava, Chao, Dia dhaoibh, Namaste, Gidday, Guten Tag, Assalamulaikum, Ciao, Salve, Ayubowan, Fakaalofa atu, Hola, Susaday, Bonjour, Hao Kia ora, What a hive of activity it’s been! Last Thursday we practised our Earthquake Drill and Tsunami Evacuation. We were very impressed at the speed and time in which we moved inland. On Friday the school enjoyed a rotation of matariki games and the annual Parentlink-run Matariki Disco. Once again this was huge success. A special thank you to Kedron Parker who has been our DJ for the past few years, our students love having the opportunity to rip up on the dance floor.

Friday also saw the arrival of new browsing boxes for the library, the plants for Monday’s planting and the new window frames for the hall. The double glazed safety glass windows were installed on Saturday. On Sunday the pre-planting working bee enjoyed the best of weather and on Monday our tamariki showed off their green fingers and planted up the area at the northern end of the school just beyond the boundary fence. We were joined by an enthusiastic team of Conservation volunteers and our own stream team. Many hands made for lightning progress and a job well done.

On Monday I met with Ministry of Education building project team and I’m pleased to be able to share that we have moved into the detailed design phase of our new classroom block which will replace Rooms 6 and 7. This is a Ministry led and funded project. Work here at school will continue through the holiday break with the Wellington City Council tree team on site on Tuesday 9th July, working to prune all the trees overhanging the school fence, the water tank and the power lines.

Today Māhuri hub will be bringing home their mid-year progress reports. The reporting format has been changed to meet the requirements of the New Zealand Curriculum and we would appreciate any feedback you may have. In the first instance feel free to pass this on to Matua Vaughan and Niky Clegg. Today is also Jo Solomon’s last day with us. Jo has been working as a teacher aide with one of our students in Whanake over the term. We wish her well in her new role.

Friday is Matua Vaughan’s last day with us as a fixed term teacher covering parental leave. Matua Vaughan will be farewelled at this Friday’s assembly where we will wish him bon voyage and say ka kite ano, because we hope to see him again soon. Matua Vaughan has been generous in sharing his talents and strengths with the team, especially the students in Room 1 and across the Māhuri hub.

Next term we welcome back Mrs Martin, who we have missed. She will return to teaching in Room 1 and resume her role as Deputy Principal. Sherwin Mottram will provide management release for Mrs Martin and will teach in Room 1 each Thursday. I would like to take this opportunity to extend a huge thank you to Jo Sciascia for all her work and support in the role of acting Deputy Principal over the past two terms. Jo’s contribution has ensured the continued smooth running of Owhiro Bay School and it’s been a privilege to work alongside her for the benefit of all the tamariki of Owhiro Bay School.

Finally, I want to say that we are pleased that our teachers have ratified their new Collective Agreement due to a number of their conditions being met and an accord in place to address further issues. It is heartening that the profession of teaching has been recognised and valued. Thank you to our many parents who were vocal in your support of teachers. The team here at Owhiro Bay have poured their hearts and souls into the students learning this term. Along

with our support staff, each has gone above and beyond the call of duty to add rich learning experiences for our tamariki across their areas of individual expertise. I’m really proud of the whole team and like our students they deserve a well-earned break.

Coming up to the holidays – an ideal time to check your child/ren’s hair for nits and treat if necessary, get rested and get well after all those nasty bugs we had around in Term 3!

ACCESS FOR AFTER SCHOOL CARE / HEALTH AND SAFETY

Could families who use the Enjoy After School Care service please use the entrance to the hall via the ramp for pick up please. To ensure the safety of staff working on-site after hours and as part of our general security measures we lock all our various external doors after school each day. It has been disconcerting to discover that the doors have been unlocked from the inside by families leaving at various times from 3.15pm onwards, particularly for staff who working here after dark and when there is no one in attendance in the admin area. Enjoy lock the hall ramp door when the last of their clients are picked up. Thank you for your co-operation in this matter.

Flying Furballs with Donovan Bixley

Author and illustrator Donovan Bixley will entertain with stories, drawing and reading from Breakout, the latest book in his hilarious Flying Furballs illustrated junior fiction series set in a reimagined World War 1 of cats versus dogs. There's even a chance of designing your own Flying Furballs character which might turn up in a future book. Donovan's picture book How Maui Fished Up the North Island is a finalist in the 2019 NZ Book Awards for Children & Young Adults. For ages 5 to 12.
