Volume 22 Issue 30 Thursday 06 October 2016 W elcome and Welcome Back! I trust teachers, children and parents alike had an enjoyable school break and that all have returned to school and other respective duties revitalized for the demands of our final term for the year! Upon our return, we also welcomed six new families to the school; the Argawal family, the Bourke family, the Fisher family, the Kerrison family, the Wang family and the Weerawardana family. To our new families and to our established families, may I extend a sincere welcome and welcome back, respectively! P ersonal Achievement - Jack H. 6JA Earlier this year, I swam exceptionally well and came first in all my swimming events in the school state championships. From this, I was selected for team Victoria to compete at the school national championships in Darwin. On the 15th of September I went on a plane with the team to Darwin. I stayed at apartments with the team for 6 days. There were 3 other boys my age staying with me in my apartment room. I loved being a part of the team, doing activities together and cheering for others who were racing. The nerves in my first race were just like being on your first day at school. As I approached the diving blocks I saw the team getting ready to cheer me on. I was racing in the 200m individual medley. When I was racing, I thought to myself I have to go fast for my school. After the race, I was waiting for the results when the presenter came over and said, "Can you please come over to the medal blocks?" I was thrilled! I had placed third. I had my first medal; a bronze! After that, I was racing in the 50m butterfly. In the individual medley the first stroke was butterfly and we were all so close so I knew that it was going to be close. I was about to race when I heard someone in the crowd say, “GO JACK!" After the race, I got another bronze. My next race was the 50m breaststroke and as that was my favourite stroke, I knew I had a good chance. In the race I was head to head with the guy next to me, but the closer to the wall we got the further away he was getting. In the end, I got bronze again! By this stage, I was really wanting a gold or silver. The next race I had was the 500m medley relay. The race went for so long but after a while it was my turn. I was doing breaststroke and it was just me and that guy I was racing before. I was slowly catching up to him then his team got 4 th and we got 3 rd ; that made me really happy and the team really happy as well. www.brentwoodparkps.vic.edu.au TERM DATES 2016 TERM 1 28 JAN. - 24 MARCH TERM 2 11 APRIL - 24 JUNE TERM 3 11 JULY - 16 SEPT. I won 4 bronze medals, raced in 10 events, got 10 personal best times, and competed in 3 relays. I had an amazing time at the Darwin School National Championships. I made new friends, learned new things, saw jumping crocodiles and experienced the warm Northern Territory. I had the best time. I was so proud to represent Brentwood Park Primary nationally. Thank you to all the students and families who supported me through fundraising to attend this memorable event in Darwin. Jack H. 6JA

C hinese Language and Culture This term, the students will be learning words and phrases

associated with animals and the body. Additionally, the children will be encouraged to use Shadow Puppetry to demonstrate an application of their oral skills in these areas: Introducing themselves, (review and

application of previous learning) Introducing their friends, (review and

application of previous learning) Their likes and dislikes in colours,

animals, (review and application of previous learning)

Body part names (application of new learning this term)

Children will work on their shadow puppet show in their second class session, however, parents are encouraged to get involved! Here are some useful links. Ideally, we are hopeful that the children will produce some mini movies of their learning by the end of this term. Here are some useful videos relating to shadow puppet making. If children want to know more, I recommend children watch some shows performed by Richard Bradshaw who is a great master of shadow puppetry! Here are some links from Youtube. P rep Transition Program The Prep Transition program commenced on Wednesday and the teachers were most impressed

with the children’s listening skills and engagement. As the children arrived they were invited to select a fine motor activity , such as building with lego, creating shapes with play doh, threading, drawing etc. and the children immediately were engaged and focussed. The children then listened to the teacher reading a story and the children listened intently. The children were invited to trace over the sentence I went to school and draw themselves at school. The children concentrated on completing the task to their best ability. WELL DONE to all the children who attended on Wednesday! You are STARS!! We look forward to seeing you on the 19th October. Whilst the children were in the classrooms their parents listened to a talk by Jim Bell on What Happens at School. The presentation has been photocopied and will be included in a ‘showbag’ which each family will receive at the end of the transition program. before movement. Travel or motion sickness which may make

casualty worse. While waiting for medical aid, make sure: There is no further danger. The casualty has a clear airway and is able to

breath. The most experienced First Aider manages the

airway [if casualty in unconscious] or the injured part.

B rentwood Park’s Annual Mini Fete! Once again, as part of economics

teaching, the grade 5 and 6 students will be holding their annual mini fete on Wednesday 19th October! Students have already decided on their individual stalls and are currently seeking sponsorship to boost their $30 budget. Some grade 5 students are going to hold a Trash and Treasure stall and it would be appreciated that if you have any items at home which you no longer require, to please donate them to 5LF/5SM in room 11a/11b. Also, if any member of our school community is in a position to sponsor or donate items that can be used as a prize or raffled off, we would appreciate your support. Grade 5 Teachers and Students

S ports Shorts - Divisional Athletics A great result to have thirteen of our students competing at Division Athletics on Wednesday.

Unfortunately three of our star athletes were unable to compete due to injuries. Deng a state finalist from 2015, Josh was sick and Landon a super high jumper missed the carnival. A big effort was produced by Ricky and Danny who at the last moment were able to step into the 12 year old boys relay team and run superbly. Seven students have progressed through to Regional Athletics. The standard of athletics at this level is very high and all of our students competed exceptionally well under very cold and windy conditions. A huge thank you to Sandra Pruvlj and Mel Dennis for their continued assistance with transporting our students, your help is greatly appreciated. The results are below and congratulations again to the whole team. 12 year boys: Ricky, Danny, Jake and Sonny 5th in

relay. 11 year boys: Azaan 2nd in triple jump. Ishaan 2nd

in 100m. Max 4th in 200m. 11 year girls: Penny 4th in shot put. 10 year girls: Jessie, Karita, Theresa and Mia 1st in

relay. Mia 4th in 200m. 10 year boys: Maginga 1st in high jump and 1st in

hurdles. Well done to the schools’ athletes for reaching this level of competition. Good luck to our students who are competing ‘Regional Athletics” next week.

Despite the weather prediction, the students had an  incredible  time  at  Arrabri  Lodge,  in Warburton.  We  were  lucky  to  experience  an action  packed  adventure  in  the  great  outdoors. Students    enjoyed  activities  such  as;  archery, orienteering,  flying  fox,  minigolf  and  the  giant swing.  All  campers  stepped  outside  their  normal

friendship  groups  and made  new  friends.  They

demonstrated  persistence,  confidence,

independence  and  resilience  throughout  the

activities,  and  had  an  incredibly  memorable

experience.

P LEASE DIRECT MONEY FOR EXCURSIONS, ETC TO YOUR CLASSROOM TEACHER - NOT TO THE OFFICE. Please hand money and permission slip in sealed envelopes to classroom teacher first thing in the morning. By following this process teachers are aware that your child will be attending the excursion and mark them

off their lists. Money is collected by office staff and processed each morning and a receipt given back to teachers along with permission slips. All money is tallied and banked daily – no money is left on the premises. If you wish to pay by credit card, a proforma is available from the office. This can be filled out with details and placed in a sealed envelope and handed to your classroom teacher

Please deliver cash in a sealed envelope with your child’s name and grade on the front by 9.30 a.m. If you have a number of children attending an excursion you can place all money and permission slips in the one envelope with children’s names and grades on the front and deliver to one of the children’s teachers. The office staff will be able to allocate money to the children’s particular items and distribute permission slips and receipts back to teachers. Enve-lopes are available at the office. If you have a large amount to be paid or need to process an EFTPOS transaction through a savings account you can make arrangements to pay at the office. We also have a new Qkr payment system on our Skoolbag app. If you download our Skoolbag app and Qkr payment app you can now pay for your child’s excursion on line.

All change will be delivered to the children in the afternoon. Re-imbursements will only be made under certain circumstances – they will be made by cheque (no cash transactions are made).

Notices are sent out with a final collection time – please adhere to this time. All money and permission slips are re-quired to be sent back by this date – otherwise your child will not be able to attend. This enables us to confirm book-ings and numbers with bus companies and organisations we are visiting. Also we need to send details to the Depart-ment of Education Emergency Management for all excursions, camps, etc. We also need to accommodate students who will not be attending.

We would appreciate it if parents could please follow these processes.
