From the Deputy Congratulations mums and dads, boys and girls and teachers. As I move around the school I have been very impressed with how settled the K-6 students are. Well done everyone! Swimming Carnival Success Well done and thank you to the organising committee consisting of Mrs Boyle, Miss Moore and Mrs Stone, who were supported all day without a break our wonderful teachers. What a great day! Thank you to all parents who supported our school and were able to attend. A special thank you to parents, who volunteered on the day, as Life Guards, Time Keepers, Judges and allocating swimming caps to our students. Good job! Your time and assistance was very much appreciated!

Congratulations to all Curly students who competed in State Nippers last weekend at Swansea Belmont. I hope you were able to do a PB!

School Photos Rescheduled Everyone looked so good a few weeks ago, in their school uniforms and my apologies for making the decision to postpone our outdoor photos on the Thursday and again on the Friday. AdvancedLife photographers and I were in the playground at 7.30am, looking at the sky and the clouds, as well as the weather maps on our phones. They were all ‘line ball’ calls each day and eventually proved to be the correct call. We wanted to try and get the best outdoor class photos as possible and student safety, with some of the higher seating, if damp, became an WHS safety issue as well. The new date is Tuesday 26 March On this new photo day there will be no individual portraits, or sibling photos will be taken, as they were all completed a few weeks ago.

To get the best photos possible, all students will be requested to wear their full school uniform.

The Y6 group photo will not be photographed until term three.

The requested school uniform is black shoes, white socks and no anklet socks please. Green shorts and yellow shirts for K-6 boys, although the Y6 boys may wear their white tops. Girls should wear their school tunics.

A reminder that all students are required to wear black shoes as a part of the school uniform (no white soles, no coloured markings, no canvas shoes and black laces if required).

On the day, if your child has PE on a Tuesday, they are more than welcome, to bring their sport shoes in their bag and if required, change into their PE /sports uniform as well.

Band Photos will also be taken on this day, from lunchtime onwards. Students, who are in the band program, will need to change into their band uniform, as well as also bring their instruments for the photos.

If a student will be making multiple changes of uniform throughout the day, my suggestion is to label all clothing and put each change of clothing into a separately, clearly labelled, small carry bag. This will make it much easier for the children involved.

ICAS Tests / Competitions A number of parents have asked their child’s teacher, or me about ICAS Competitions for 2019.

UNSW Global, the organising body for ICAS Competitions, has advised that due to a change all ICAS competitions are now going to be held in September.

All ICAS tests will be undertaken electronically, except the Y3 and Y4 Writing paper, which will still be able to be done as a paper and pen test. Y5 and Y6 Writing will need to do the tests electronically. This poses a few extra challenges for us as a school, ensuring connectivity and scheduling our PCs and Laptops.

All ICAS Competitions /Tests will be $14.50.

More information will be sent home later this term or at the beginning or term two. Chess Club Chess Club meets on a Wednesday morning before school and is run by the Sydney Chess Academy who provide a tutor. These tutors all have a current working with children checks.

If you would like your child to join chess, please contact the Sydney Chess Academy (97451170) to sign up.

Congratulations to Toby (Y3), Caleb (Y3), Elliot (Y3), Jacob (Y3), Flynn (Y4) and Morris (Y1), who have been offered an opportunity, to participate in the Mona Vale Chess Tournament on 18 March. Transport to and from the venue will be the responsibility of parents, but I will coordinate all transport.

Scripture and Ethics Scripture, Non Scripture and Ethics commenced on 12 February. We thank in advance the volunteers who come into our school to assist our students with Special Religious Education and Special Education in Ethics. All volunteers have a current working with children check and are verified by their church or the Ethics Foundation. Details of the approved providers authorised curriculum scope and sequence can be found on our school website by clicking on the link below.

P&C News P&C News On March 26th we will be holding our Annual General Meeting of the P&C. All parents and guardians of students at the school and citizens within the school community are welcome to come along to hear about the P&C’s activities in 2018 and our plans for 2019. The AGM provides an excellent opportunity for parents to become involved in the P&C for the year. A new P&C Executive Committee as well as some subcommittees will be elected at the AGM and parents are more than welcome to nominate for a position or to just come along and observe. This year we are also seeking nominations for two parent representatives to sit on School Council. Nomination forms will be available from the School Office.

President’s Report 2018 Welcome to another year at North Curly from the P&C, I would like to share with you what we have been doing over the last year in our continuing support for the school and what we have planned for 2019.

The P&C is responsible for the operation of the Uniform Shop, the Curly Canteen and the Curly Kids Out of School Hours (OOSH) service. The continued demand for all these services led to another busy year in 2018.

I would like to express my sincere thanks to the P&C Executive Committee and the OOSH Subcommittee for their practical and moral support but also offer thanks on behalf of the school community which benefits from the funds we raise and the services we operate.

We had a great year of fundraising in 2018, including the Entertainment Books, our popular comedy night,

Some of what we have funded in 2018:

• Continued our programme of purchasing iPads for the school by adding another 20 to the current bank, with the aim of having at least 6 iPads per class by the middle of this year

• Funded the new Macqlit Literacy Support Programme for years 3-6, a valuable programme which makes such a difference to literacy rates in the older years

• Funded the Curly Visible Learning team (a team of 13 teachers and leaders) to participate in the Corwin Visible Learning Programme

• We have taken over the funding for the successful Year 3 Book Programme which has been encouraging home reading for students in year 3 for a number of years now

• Purchased giant chess, checkers and connect 4 outdoor games for the students

• Funded up to $1000 per grade for the teachers to add education resources for their year group

Canteen News: We said a sad farewell to our canteen supervisor Tabitha Dearden who has had such an impact on the lives of so many of the Curly kids. She misses us so much she will return for the odd shift behind the window and we look forward to seeing her.

I would like to thank our canteen supervisors Katarina Wilson-Rynell and Nesrine Cherouk and our canteen assistants Maria Calci and Vanessa Smith for their hard work and all the parent volunteers for their time and efforts all of which assist in providing this important service to Curly families.

Curly Kids OOSH: I would like to thank our Interim Director Andrew Hearne and the rest of the OOSH staff for continuing to provide such a great service to working families. I would also like to acknowledge the many hours of work over the last year by the OOSH sub-committee.

In 2018 we achieved:

• Placements offered to new and existing families bringing us up to capacity on our busy days

• New online management system, sign in/out and a parent app for better communication

We are very grateful to Stuart Wagland, P&C Bookkeeper, his continued support to the P&C is greatly appreciated and I personally would like to express my thanks for the support he has provided me this past year.

Our meetings in 2018 provided an opportunity for parents to contribute to discussion and learn about school issues and initiatives. We are grateful to Mrs Blatchford and Mrs Crawford for their regular attendance at P&C meetings and for keeping attending parents well informed.
