Year 6 Canberra / Snow Excursion Last week I attended the 5-day Year 6 Canberra/Snow excursion which included a 3-day ski program in Thredbo for all the students. All the children had a great time and an amazing experience. The 5-day camp is coordinated by Action Learning Initiatives (ALI) in Jindabyne in conjunction with our Year 6 teachers. ALI delivers a fantastic camp and ensures the children have an unforgettable learning experience. All students, including those who had never skied before learnt to ski over the 3-day ski program. The children also visited the Australian Science Museum, Questacon and Parliament House last Friday morning amongst all the political developments of the day. It was a wonderful camp. I’d like to thank Mrs Herbert for all her organisation and care of the children as well as Miss Sharp and Mrs Brown for their hard work and taking such good care of the children. I’d also like to acknowledge the positive attitude and good behaviour that our Year 6 students demonstrated throughout the excursion. 2018 STANSW Young Scientist Paper Planes Championship On Saturday some of our students participated in the Young Scientist Paper Planes Championships at Sydney University. Our children participated enthusiastically and did exceptionally well. The championship was full of excitement and interesting paper plane designs. Charles placed first and Jatco placed second in the K-2 Distance event and Jerry placed second in the Year 6 distance event and came first in the Year 6 Airtime event. University of New South Wales Band Competition On Sunday our four bands participated in the NSW Bands Competition at the University of New South Wales. The children participated with great enthusiasm and passion. All four bands performed exceptionally well with our Junior, Concert and Performance Ensemble bands receiving a Gold award and our Jazz band receiving a Silver award. This is a fabulous result and great reward for their hard work over the year. I’d like to thank Mrs Herbert for helping to coordinate this opportunity and being there all day Sunday after being away from her family that whole week on the Year 6 Camp. Thank you also to Mrs Abbott, our Band Coordinator and our band conductors for all their hard work in ensuring that the children were prepared for this competition. I also appreciate the children’s parents making the commitment to getting their children to this event. Congratulations to all our students across all four bands on a wonderful achievement. Zone Athletics Carnival Last Wednesday 36 students represented PPS at our Zone Athletics Carnival. The children all participated and competed with enthusiasm and a positive attitude. Our students performed extremely well on the day and achieved excellent results. Congratulations to all our zone athletics competitors for a wonderful effort. For more details on the results at the zone athletics carnival please see Mrs Robinson’s piece in this edition of the Myalla. I’d like to thank Mrs Robinson for her hard work in coordinating this event and Mrs Venter for her assistance on the day. 2019 Kindergarten Enrolments Kindergarten enrolments for 2019 are now due to the School Office for processing. If you have a child due to start Kindergarten in 2019, if you haven’t already done so, please submit an enrolment form to the School as soon as possible. Thank you. Bruno Diodati Principal

Library News

For the first half of this term across K-6 we have been reading the books illustrated by Craig Smith. He visited the school this week on Monday and Tuesday and had a great two days speaking and drawing with the children. The quality of their drawing is amazing. They enjoyed their time with him immensely. For the rest of this term we will be reading the CBCA shortlisted books, on this year’s theme “Find your treasure”. This allows us a great variety of wonderful books to choose from and read. Kathryn Harris Teacher Librarian

Paper Planes

Last Saturday, a number of PPS students participated in the Paper Planes NSW Championship competition at Sydney University. It was great to see all our students having so much fun and giving their best in the competition. Mrs Pegolo and I were very proud of all the competitors. The competition was intense at times as the students only had two chances in each round to pilot a great throw under high-pressure conditions. The planes had to be made in front of the judges and there was no real ‘testing’ time. There were a number of students who achieved great results. Our K-2 contenders had an exceptional competition. Krishna Soundapparaju, Hamish McKindley, Jatco Yuen and Charlie Holt all made it to the semi-finals in the distance category. Of those, Jatco and Charlie progressed to the grand final where Jatco Yuen came 2nd and earned a silver medal with a distance throw of 22.35 metres. Charlie Holt made an amazing throw with a distance of 26.1 metres to take out first place with a gold medal and a one hundred dollar prize. Jadon Xie also made it to the finals in the Airtime category. Of our Year 3 contenders, Nathan Tuck made it to the Distance semi finals. In the Year 6 Distance category, Jerry Lau obtained the silver medal, throwing a distance of 26.35 metres. He then entered the Airtime event where he went on to win a gold medal with an airtime of 8.22 seconds. I would like to thank all the students who competed in the Paper Planes Championships. They were a credit to their parents and their school. Well done. Mrs Lee-Joe

PSSA students will be notified by their coaches as to when training will commence. Rugby On Saturday 18th August, the PPS rugby students had the opportunity to be a part of the Part Of More March at the Bledisloe Cup. This initiative celebrates the people that make up the Australian rugby community. This was an amazing and unique experience where students marched proudly in their PPS sports uniform around the oval during the Wallabies and All Blacks pre-match warm up. Students also received tickets to watch the game live, enjoying the enthusiasm of a crowd of 80, 000 people. Thank you to Mrs Herbert and Mr Dormer who graciously gave up their Saturday evenings to attend the match with me and the students. Rebecca Venter Sports Co-ordinator

Jump Rope for Heart

Jump Rope for Heart Fundraiser Friday 7th September, Week 7

It’s that time of year again for our annual Jump Rope for Heart Fundraiser. Each year, the Heart Foundation Jump Rope program attracts over 300,000 school students, in over 1,500 schools around the country - and on Friday 7th September, Pymble Public School students will be doing their part in the fight against heart disease and stroke. This year we are asking for a gold coin donation to help raise vital funds for this important organisation. The children will enjoy skipping in groups for close to 45 minutes. They are asked to wear mufti clothes, ensuring they have enclosed sports shoes on, suitable for skipping (joggers are recommended). The Pymble Power Pumpers will be performing just after 12pm on the netball court, parents are invited to watch. Thank you for your support. We look forward to a fun day learning new skills and tricks. Kaitlin Richards Jump Rope for Heart Coordinator
