Principal’s News

Welcome back to our last school term of the 2018 school year. Term 4 promises to be a very busy, exciting and productive term. Band Tour This past weekend our Performance Ensemble accompanied by their band conductors, Bec Morris and Paul Taylor with teachers Mrs Venter, Mr Dormer and band parent helpers Deb Phipson and Chris Gibbs, participated in a 3 day band tour of western NSW. The students visited Wellington Caves and Dubbo Zoo and performed at, The Ascott Gardens Residential Aged Care Facility and The Orange Youth festival, The Kintyre Country Living Retirement Village, The Sushi Festival and Mudgee Public School. This tour has proved to be an amazing opportunity and experience for the students involved. The students all performed beautifully and behaved brilliantly throughout the tour. They camped at Dubbo Zoo and had a ‘Roar & Snore’ experience as well as going on a tour of the zoo. The students also went on a tour of Wellington Caves. Above all they were able to experience performing in front of multiple and diverse audiences and enjoying each other’s company on a 3 day band tour. This tour involved an extensive amount of preparation and coordination as well as a lot of hard work during the tour. I’d like to thank Zannie Abbott (Band Coordinator) and Mrs Herbert for all their organisation for this tour. I’d like to thank Mrs Venter and Mr Dormer for volunteering their weekend and time away from their families in order to supervise the children while on tour. I’d like to also thank the band conductors and band parent helpers who also volunteered their time to attend and assist on tour. It has been a huge all-round effort in order for this amazing opportunity to have been made possible. Thank you.

New K-2 Playground Update Last Friday a note went home providing parents with an update on the new K-2 Playground Project. As per this correspondence, I am very excited to announce that the tender for the construction of our new K-2 playground has been awarded and work will start at the beginning of next week. The project has a completion time frame for the start of the 2019 school year, barring any unavoidable events like extended periods of wet weather. While the construction period will reduce the current K-2 playground area, it will not impact on the Crown Road School entry. Access to the school via the Crown Road entry gate will remain clear for the duration of the new K-2 playground construction period. Students will also continue to have safe, supervised play areas to access during recess and lunch times and access to the school’s pool will remain unaffected. This is an exciting development in the building of the planned new K-2 playground space and while there is some time to go before its delivery, I’d like to thank the P&C for their commitment in supporting and funding this project. K-2 Assembly Item – KM Last Friday KM performed their assembly item at our K-2 Assembly. The children performed a dramatic retelling of the all-time classic picture book, ‘Where the Wild Things Are’ by Maurice Sendak and sang a song. The children were absolutely brilliant! I was particularly impressed by their acting and how they remembered their lines at the young age of only 5 and 6. KM’s performance was extremely entertaining and magnificently performed. I’d like to congratulate KM on their item and thank Miss McMunnigal for preparing the children so beautifully for their performance.

Ku-ring-gai Public Speaking Competition Joshua who won our Year 6 public speaking competition last term represented PPS at the Ku-ring-gai Public Speaking competition on Monday. This competition is hosted by our local State Member, the Hon. Alister Henskens in the House of Representative at Parliament House. This is a very exciting event on our school calendar and an amazing experience for the participating student and his family. Joshua spoke with confidence, articulated his arguments superbly and represented PPS with pride. There was a very high standard of public speaking on display and Joshua performed brilliantly. I’d like to congratulate Joshua on this achievement. I’d like to also thank Mrs Woof for coordinating this opportunity and Mr Henskens his continued support of this competition.

2019 NAPLAN Late last term parents of Year 3 and 5 students received their children’s 2019 NAPLAN reports. While NAPLAN is only a snapshot of how students in Years 3 and 5 are performing at a particular ‘point in time’, it does provide us with valuable diagnostic data on individual students in our school. Overall, our Year 3 and 5 students have performed exceptionally well across all aspects of the 2019 NAPLAN assessments. 91% of our Year 3 students scored in the top 2 skill bands (bands 5 & 6) for reading and 79.5% for Numeracy, which is outstanding. Our Year 3 and 5 NAPLAN score averages across all 5 assessment areas (Numeracy, Reading, Grammar & Punctuation, Spelling and Writing) not only sit above the State averages but also above our high achieving ‘similar school group’ averages. The growth data which is reported against our Year 5 students is also promising and impressive. We should all be proud of these results and celebrate the achievement of our students. We need to also acknowledge the hard work and dedication of our teachers and School Leadership Team across the whole school who continually strive to deliver high quality teaching and learning programs for all students K-6. I’d like to also acknowledge the part that parents play in supporting their children’s education here at PPS. Congratulations to all our Year 3 and 5 students on their NAPLAN results. Leaving PPS? A reminder that if your child or children will be leaving Pymble PS at the end of this year it would be appreciated if you would notify the School Office as soon as possible as this assists us greatly when planning for the 2019 school year. Crossing Supervisor Needed RMS has not been able to this year fill the School Crossing Supervisor position for the Pentacost Road crossing. This has meant that when casual crossing supervisors have not been available (which has been quite regular of late) that the Pentacost crossing is not supervised during the morning and afternoon 40km/hr school zone times. The advertisement for this position is attached and applications close on Sunday 28 October 2018. Should you be interested in this position or know of anyone who may be could you please encourage them to apply. The RMS School Crossing Supervisor has indicated to me that it can be difficult to fill these positions on the Upper North Shore. In the interest of our students’ safety I urge you to please give this matter some thought and as mentioned encourage any suitable candidates that you may know to apply. Thank you.

New Playground

Today the fence has gone up in preparation for the new playground construction. There have been many changes to the playground arrangements which began today. If possible, as per the school guidelines, please try to avoid bringing children to school before 8:30am.

If your child arrives at school before 8.30am, please ensure they wait outside the office until the bell rings.

No Hat No Play

This term we will be continuing to insist that children wear hats while outside. Any child who does not have a hat will be asked to sit in the shade to avoid excessive sun exposure.

Term 4 is always an extra busy term, filled with additional events. Please ensure that you keep up to date with the Myalla and School Stream in order to avoid missing any important news.

Environmental Sustainability News - Envirobank

Thank you to the families who have brought their ‘Orange Bags’ back into school. Envirobank will be coming to PPS next Thursday to pick up the bags we have collected so far. Our rough estimates are at nearly $100 for our first collection, which is an excellent start. After a large influx of returned bags, it has been decided orange bags can be brought to school on TUESDAY of each week. They can be neatly placed outside of 2S as you arrive to school. Please continue to see Mr Sillato to receive a new bag. A few things to note: > please only return orange bags when they are completely full. > only collect bottles that have the 10c refund mark on the sticker (see photos). > large milk bottles, tin cans, shampoo bottles and washing detergent bottles will not be accepted.

Thank you for your help so far and keep up the good work! Lauryn Sharp and Tim Sillato Classroom Teachers Environmental Sustainability Coordinators

PSSA Report Boys Cricket Seniors Vs Masada Score: 80 Loss

The team played well but unfortunately we lost. Austin, Tom and Andrew all did a great job on field. Juniors Vs N/A Score: Win

Girls Cricket Juniors Vs. St Ives North Score: 76-25 Win

I think our team played really well. Sarah was a good bowler and Lucy was really funny, making everyone laugh. I think that the players who were the best today were Sarah, Josie and Lucy.

Seniors Vs. St Ives North Score: 130-101 Win All of the team played amazingly well. Everyone was positive and cheered everyone on. We still have some work to do though. Chloe played well and hit lots of wickets, Abi was great at batting and Pearl was a great bowler. Modball Seniors Vs St Ives North Score: 11-1 Loss

The team played very well, and tried hard, even though we lost. Jerry, Sophia and Mia were the best players today. Juniors Vs St Ives Park Score: 15/14 Loss

Our team were greatly encouraging and we were cheering each other on with heart. Elena was injured, but we kept on fighting hard until the end. Elena, Dinesh and Max were our best players. Touch Football Seniors Boys

Game 1 Vs Beaumont Rd Score: 6-4 Win Game 2 Vs Gordon West Score: 2-0 Win

We played well and did some good passes but in the first game our defence was lacking. Dilan scored two tries and assisted lots. Josh did some great runs and steps. Seniors Girls

Game 1 Vs Lindfield East Score: 2-0 Loss

Game 2 Vs St Ives Score: 2-1 Loss

Everyone played well, so it was quite unfortunate that we lost. We worked really well as a team. Georgia was determined throughout both matches, and Georgie made some good runs. Junior Boys

Game 1 Vs St Ives Park 1 Score: 2-1 Win

Game 2 Vs St Ives North Score: 7-10 Win

We played well two amazing games but we weren’t moving up as a team, so need to work on this. Jake, John, Sam, Jack and James all had really good games. Junior Girls

Game 1 Vs Gordon West Score: 1-1 Tie

Game 2 Vs Beaumont Rd Score: 2-0 Loss

We played well and passed a lot. No-one dropped the ball, which was really good. Amber, Freya and Lily were the top players.
