TRANSCRIPT
We are continuing our focus on SET (Science, Engineering, & Tech-nology). This month our program is entitled “Captivating Caves” and will focus on types of caves, history of formation, underground life forms and the food chain.
4-H Record Books will also be discussed during January club meetings. Record book completion is an important part of the 4-H program. We are very impressed with the clubs who are working on their rec-ord books each month. This keeps the kids interested and the work is getting done.
Record books will be due in the 4-H Office February 25. All 5-12 grade books must be in a binder. 4-H record book binders will be available in January and February for $2.50. Please complete the form at the end of the Update and turn it in with your check at your January meeting so that binders can be delivered in February. Make checks payable to Lafayette 4-H Foundation.

Food for Families Update
Thank you goes out to all who braved the cold and participated in the annual 4-H Food for Families Drive. We were very pleased with the number of schools that participated this year. You all really showed your “4-H Spirit” with all of the 4-H posters and decorations on the vehicles in the parade. We are aware that many of you also donated to local churches and shel-ters. Your efforts were a success and are all appreciated!

January Community Service –Arbor Day
Arbor Day will be celebrated in Louisiana on Friday, January 21, 2011. We are inviting all clubs to do something special for Arbor Day as the January CRD project. Here are a few suggestions:
Trees can be planted at schools or on public property only after permission has been granted.
Your club could plant a tree on the school grounds and dedicate it as a memorial, a living monument to someone who has made contributions to your community or school.
Another idea is to help re-landscape an area of your school or local park.
For more information on planting trees please refer to the LSU AgCenter and search “plant trees” or click the search button. 4-H Night with the Hornets
4-H Night with the New Orleans Hornets
will be Saturday, February 12th. The game
will begin at 7:00 p.m. and will be held in the
New Orleans Hornets Arena, New Orleans,
LA against the Chicago Bulls.
If your club is interested getting group
tickets ($25 each person), contact the 4-H
Office. Deadline to order your tickets is for tickets is February 1,
2011. We have all of the details for the event on our parish
webpage under contest rules.
Character Counts
As we start the new year, lets start on the right foot. Let’s make a promise to make the world a better place. One way to keep that promise is to practice the six pillars of character. January is the month for Trustworthiness. A trustworthy person is a person of integrity. A person who stands up for his/her beliefs. If you are trustworthy you follow your conscience. Always have the courage to do what is right and to try new things even when its hard. Being trustworthy means always telling the truth and nothing but the truth. Be sincere. Don’t lie, cheat, steal, or sneak. Just practice the pillars of character and start the year off right!

4-H Goes 4G: Globally Growing- Geauxing Green
This year’s 4-H statewide service learning project is “4-H Goes 4G”. This is a statewide campaign for environmental awareness. The idea is that each parish would assess their needs and build an environmental service-learning project. One of the top ten environmental
service projects is Recycling. Today, many communities have recycling programs. If yours happens to be one of the communities without such a program, contact your town/city hall or company that picks up the refuse in your neighborhood for information on how to start such a program. Visit Keep America Beautiful at (www. kab.org) and The EPA’s page on recycling at http://www.epa.gov/epawaste/index.htm Earth’s 911 can help you locate environmental information and recycling centers in your community just by typing in your zip code.
