AFL 9’s

With footy season in full swing, and finals fast approaching, a selected group of students from grades five and six have been involved in an innovative format of the game called AFL 9’s. The concept of the modified game is to produce a higher scoring, fast paced, highly skilled standard of foot-ball. On Wednesday 3rd August, we had three teams involved in the Dandenong Ranges Division level of competition held at Upwey-Tecoma Football Club. Our boys team and girls team performed exception-ally well on the day, so much so that both teams went through the day undefeated, were declared champions, and won the right to compete at the Eastern Region level of competition.

With the sun shining, and the kids eager for more success, the teams travelled to Pink’s Reserve, Kilsyth, to compete in a tough competition. The boys found the going tough on the day, and despite showing great skill and an improvement on their performances at Upwey, the sheer size and skill of their oppo-nents on the day won through. The boys should be commended for their efforts over the two rounds of competition. They showed great skill, teamwork, and tactical awareness, and as most of the boys are grade five students, we look forward to seeing how they go next year.

The girls on the other hand went from strength to strength, and as most of them hadn’t played competi-tive footy before, they were able to make huge improvements in their skills and teamwork the longer they were on the field. In a tight Grand Final against Donvale Primary School, they held onto a thrilling victory with great atmosphere surrounding the game. Mrs James even stated that it was the most ex-citing ‘awesome’ day ever!!

For the first time in many years, we have a team from Belgrave South competing at State level of com-petition which is both hugely exciting for all those involved in the team, but a great recognition of the girls ability to improve their own individual skills, as well as combine exceptionally well as a team, and adapt to the nuances of the modified rules. The State Finals will be held at IKON Park (Carlton’s home base) on Wednesday 7th September. We wish all those involved in the team all the best, and we are ex-tremely proud of your achievements.

Special thanks to Mrs James and Mr Stafford for coaching and guiding their teams to great success, as well as our legion of fans (ie. The parent’s and friends of our students) who have turned into a blue and gold army who ride every bump of the game.

Celebrating Book Week

at

Belgrave South Primary

Children's Book Week encourages children to enjoy new authors and books, and is celebrated

in schools, libraries, homes, and bookstores during August.

What better way to celebrate Book Week than by having an author visit our school.

Last year Patrick introduced our grade 3/4 students to his book, ‘That’s What Wings are for’

and it became an instant favorite with our students.

So we were delighted when we had the opportunity to have Patrick visit during Book Week but

this time he brought along one of the characters from the book.

On Wednesday author Patrick Guest surprised our P-2 children by reading them his latest book

‘The Ricker Racker club’. The children and staff were charmed by this wonderful story about

being brave and kind. Patrick Guest and Nathaniel Eckstrom tell us who and why and how in

this lively story about silly rules and even sillier situations.

At first the P-2 children weren’t sure about having a ‘WOLF’ in their school, but by the end of

the story the children learnt that with bravery and kindness the wolf wasn’t very scary at all!

We are hoping that in the near future Patrick will be back to work with our older students and

take then on the journey on the process on writing and publishing a book.

49 Ways to Calm an Anxious Child—Week 4 Tips (continued from last week)

In my work with children I often need to support them in developing the skills to deal positively with strong emo-tions. Most children will experience anxious or worrying thoughts at times. As parents, we often want to shield our children from life’s anxious moments, however learning to deal effectively with anxiety is an essential life skill that will assist them in the years to come. Adults also need these skills so it is great if children can practise them as they grow older.

As parents there are a range of things you can do to help your children identify, accept, and work through their anxious moments. Over this term I will be including some tips for parents each week in the school newsletter. Remember not all of these suggestions will work for each child – every child will need a different approach based on their individual personality. The following tips come from a great website called PsychCentral which is an Aus-tralian website that has a range of resources and information around mental health and wellbeing: http://blogs.psychcentral.com/stress-better/2016/03/49-phrases-to-calm-an-anxious-child/

If you feel your child’s anxiety is becoming a problem, always seek help from a doctor or health professional. I’m also happy to speak with parents about these issues and can refer to other professionals if needed.

Mandy Stevens, School Chaplain

Week 4 Tips (continued from last week)

31. “I’m taking a deep breath.” - Model a calming strategy and encourage your child to mirror you. If your chil-dren allow you, hold them to your chest so they can feel your rhythmic breathing and regulate theirs.

32. “How can I help?” - Let your children guide the situation and tell you what calming strategy or tool they pre-fer in this situation.

33. “This feeling will pass.” - Often, children will feel like their anxiety is never-ending. Instead of shutting down, avoiding, or squashing the worry, remind them that relief is on the way.

34. “Let’s squeeze this stress ball together.” - When your children direct their anxiety to a stress ball, they feel emotional relief. Buy a ball, keep a handful of play dough nearby or make your own homemade stress ball by fill-ing a balloon with flour or rice.

35. “I see Widdle is worried again. Let’s teach Widdle not to worry.” - Create a character to represent the wor-ry, such as Widdle the Worrier. Tell your child that Widdle is worried and you need to teach him some coping skills.

36. “I know this is hard.” - Acknowledge that the situation is difficult. Your validation shows your children that you respect them.

37. “I have your smell buddy right here.” - A smell buddy, fragrance necklace or diffuser can calm anxiety, espe-cially when you fill it with lavender, sage, chamomile, sandalwood or jasmine.

38. “Tell me about it.” - Without interrupting, listen to your children talk about what’s bothering them. Talking it out can give your children time to process their thoughts and come up with a solution that works for them.

39. “You are so brave!” - Affirm your children’s ability to handle the situation, and you empower them to suc-ceed this time.

40. “Which calming strategy do you want to use right now?” - Because each anxious situation is different, give your children the opportunity to choose the calming strategy they want to use.11. “Let’s put your worry on the shelf while we _____ (listen to your favorite song, run around the block, read this story). Then we’ll pick it back up again.”
